Women on the Run: Human Suffering and Empowerment during Their Travel Towards Italy

2021

In Italy, in recent years, the attention to female in migration has been linked to the increase in the number of women who emigrate alone to look for work like men. Women who become breadwinners, provide economic resources for the needs of their families; women who give rise to chain migration, and also family reunions, in which husbands are reunited, to reach them. Women engaged in jobs that have an importance for the functioning of the receiving society, but also women who are present as refugees and asylum seekers, women on the increase in trafficking in human beings and trafficking for sexual exploitation. Women have always emigrated, but today in the Mediterranean countries they are in…

Imaginary Numbers of Climate Change Migrants?

2019

Within the extensive scientific and policy discussions about climate change migrants, detailed analyses continue to highlight the lack of evidence thus far for climate change directly causing migration. To understand better how climate change might or might not lead to migration, this paper explores possibilities for developing a robust, repeatable, and verifiable method to count or calculate the number of people migrating or not migrating due to climate change. The discussion starts by examining definitions of &ldquo

When a virus (Covid-19) attacks human rights: The situation of asylum seekers in the medico-legal setting

2020

The Covid-19 pandemic is a global health emergency that requires immediate, effective action by governments to protect the health and basic human rights of everyone’s life. Refugees and migrants are potentially at increased risk because they typically live in overcrowded conditions often without access to basic sanitation. Since the beginning of the official lockdown for Covid-19, the medico-legal assessment of physical violence related to obtaining status or other forms of human protection has been frozen.

2018

Master's thesis Global development and planning UT505 - University of Agder 2018 Refugees is one of the major concentration of the world without considering the borders or economic level of the country. Recently, Europe also has received large number of refugees. Norway has also received many refugees from conflict zones recently. When refugees arrive to the host country it is the country responsibility to start and conduct the refugee integration process. Norway has its own refugee integration plan, and municipalities are given more responsibilities in refugee integration process. I have selected the Kristiansand municipality as my research area which is one of the municipalities in Norway…

Exploring the role of CBOs in the social integration of refugees : Case study in Kristiansand, Norway

2017

Master's thesis Global development and planning UT505 - University of Agder 2017 The arrival of refugees to European countries have increased with the conflicts around the world. However, the influx of more migrants in search of safety, better lives and work in the developed world continues to create a deep social cleavage. This thesis investigates some commonly neglected dimensions of forced migration and refugee integration. It examines the challenges refugees face in their everyday lives, and how CBOs address the challenges through their social integration programs and activities. Norway has a refugee integration plan and most of the responsibilities of the integration has been given to …

Przejawy zjawiska parentyfikacji wśród dzieci ukraińskich na skutek migracji i uchodźstwa

2022

W kolejnej części tekstu przedstawiono metodologię eksploracyjnych badań jakościowych – wywiad pogłębiony (wśród ukraińskich matek) i wywiad ekspercki (wśród terapeutów zaangażowanych w pomoc ukraińskim rodzinom). Przeprowadzono też analizę porównawczą omawianego kontekstu z wybranymi przypadkami parentyfikacji wśród migrantów w Europie. Badania wskazały d…

A value sensitive ABM of the refugee crisis in The Netherlands

2019

We develop an agent based model to characterize the wellbeing of newcomers (i.e. asylum seeking refugees) in the context of asylum logistics using Schwartz’s theory of values. The model produces recommendations for decision-makers with respect to avoiding catastrophic outcomes and maximizing best case outcomes. We conduct analysis to show that while a relatively simple set of conditions is necessary to avoid catastrophic outcomes, these conditions are insufficient to maximize the best case outcomes. Furthermore, the conditions that maximize one best case outcome do so at the expense of another. The result is a platform for decision-makers to understand tradeoffs in policies for government a…

Agent-based modelling of values: the case of value sensitive design for refugee logistics

2020

We have used value sensitive design as a method to develop an agent-based model of values in humanitarian logistics for refugees. Schwartz's theory of universal values is implemented in the model in such a way that agents can make value trade-offs, which are operationalized into a measure of refugee wellbeing and a measure of public opinion about how the refugee logistics is being handled. By trying out different ‘value-scenarios’, stakeholders who are responsible for, or involved in refugee logistics can have insights into the effects of various value choices. The model is visualized and made usable as a platform (interactive website) for decision-makers to understand the trade-offs in pol…
