Confronting blackface : Stancetaking in the Dutch Black Pete debate

ecently, the Netherlands witnessed an agitated discussion over Black Pete, a blackface character associated with the Saint Nicholas festival. This paper analyzes a televised panel interview discussing a possible court ban of public Nicholas festivities, and demonstrates that participants not only disagree over the racist nature of the blackface character but also over the terms of the debate itself. Drawing on recent sociolinguistic work on stancetaking, it traces how panelists ‘laminate’ the interview’s participation framework by embedding their assessments of Black Pete in contrasting dialogical fields. W niniejszym artykule zostaje wprowadzone do obiegu naukowego nowe źródło do badań nad historią armii litewskiej w okresie wielkiej wojny północnej (1700–1721), którym jest projekt komputu z 1703 r. Znajduje się on w Bibliotece Kórnickiej Polskiej Akademii Nauk w rękopisie o sygnaturze 985. W inwentarzu rękopisów biblioteki widnieje natomiast jako komput z 1706 r. Trudno jednak ustalić faktyczną datę jego powstania. Możliwe jest jedynie oszacowanie pewnych cezur. Sporządzony został na pewno przed 27 listopada 1703 r. On the basis of wide-ranging statistical surveys, recent pioneering studies on operetta in Italy of the second half of the 19th century have shown that the repertoire of the tour companies involved in the diffusion process of the genre built their repertoires drawing on two main sources: from one side, operettas imported from France performed in the original language or, more frequently, translated; on the other hand, new operettas composed in Italian by Italian composers (De Lucca, 2019; Oliva, 2020). The paper reflects on the linguistic, theatrical and musical characteristics of the version of Donizetti's "La figlia del reggimento" staged at the "Teatro Nuovo" in Naples in 1841.
