Diamond-Shaped Mini-Craniotomy: A New Concept in Neurosurgery

Abstract Background We describe, step by step, a modified, less invasive, diamond-shaped mini-craniotomy that optimizes dural opening and can be performed in elderly patients affected by acute subdural or intracerebral hematomas, in therapy with antiplatelets or anticoagulants. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical records of 67 patients (mean age of 78.5 years) treated in our institution, during a period of 10 years, with this novel diamond-shaped craniotomy. Seventeen patients were treated for intracerebral hemorrhage and 50 patients for acute subdural hematomas. All the patients were in therapy with antiplatelets or anticoagulants. Abstract Background The scarf and the combined scarf-Akin procedures are reliable therapeutic tools and can obtain effective correction of symptomatic moderate to severe hallux valgus deformities. Methods The data from 30 patients (37 feet) with moderate to severe hallux valgus deformity who had scarf osteotomies have been retrospectively reviewed. 32 Akin and 77 Weil osteotomies were also carried out at the same stage. Oral myiasis in mentally challenged patient: a case report

Myiasis is the infestation of live human and vertebrate animal with Dipterous larvae which feed on host’s dead or living tissue. This condition is a result of neglected approach towards oral hygiene along with mental and physical challenges of patient. A case of oral myiasis in the maxillary anterior region in an 18 years old female with neurologic defi-cit caused by the larvae (maggots) is reported. The management consists of manual removal of larvae by topical application of turpentine oil, oral therapy with Ivermectin and surgical debridement of oral wound.
