Effect of graphene nanoplatelets on the dielectric permittivity and segmental motions of electrospun poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) nanofibers

2021

The influence of the addition of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the intra/inter – molecular segmental motions of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) was assessed by means of dielectric thermal analysis (DETA). The relaxation spectra were studied in terms of the dielectric permittivity (ε′) and the dielectric loss tangent (tan δ) at wide ranges of frequency (from 10−2 to 107 Hz) and temperature (from -150 to 140 °C). Two relaxation zones were disthinguished. Below the glass transition temperature (Tg), two β-relaxations were observed, which are characteristic local modes of mobility of the EVOH side groups, and related to the influence of the different surroundings of ethylene or vinyl …

RESEARCH-BASED REFLECTIONS ABOUT CHARACTER EDUCATION: MYTHS, CHALLENGES AND INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES

2018

At present, youngsters’ character and virtue education issues are widely discussed in Latvia and in English-speaking academic environment. Given the existing criticism of these concepts, the research question was: what are the main misunderstandings about the nature of character and virtue education? After clarifying the neo-Aristotelian understanding of these concepts, recent research in the field of character education and virtues is presented for deconstructing some of the myths related to it, due to conceptual, historical, moral and political misunderstandings (Kristjánsson, 2013). Real problems (historical, methodological and practical) faced by character education programs in mainstre…

Industrialization Strategies and Regional Actors

2021

Against the backdrop of the partly normative, partly empirical policy framework, the major regional industrial policy documents of the African Union, EAC, ECOWAS, SACU and SADC are examined as to their applicability. The empirical cases of the West African dairy and textile value chains are used to discuss the difficulties of regional priority-setting. The precise roles of (a) regional financial institutions, (b) regional development aid, including the panoply of ‘private sector development’ (PSD) projects and (c) regional business associations are defined. A concise summary of the essentials of common industrial policy concludes the chapter.

Location Theories and Business Location Decision: A Micro-Spatial Investigation of a Nonmetropolitan Area in Canada

2016

International audience; This paper draws on location theories to statistically identify the relationship between the location of individual business establishments and the characterization of their local economic environment. Taking a microspatial perspective, the paper develops indicators from distance-based measures (DBM) to serve as independent variables in a discrete choice model (DCM). Using a 2006 database of individual business establishments in the Lower-St-Lawrence region—a coherent, nonmetropolitan subsystem of cities in the province of Québec, Canada—we provide an empirical analysis of the determinants of individual establishments’ location decisions in relation to their main eco…

¿Quién decide qué y cómo? el conflicto en torno a la participación ciudadana en el contexto del desarrollo de la iniciativa urbana: Cuenca-San Antón …

2018

This article describes the main results of an ethnographic study on citizen participation carried out in the context of the development of the Urban Initiative (2007-2015): Cuenca-Barrio de San Antón. Managed by the City Council of Cuenca and financed by the European Regional Development Funds (FEDER) under the Ministry of Economy and Finance at the Government of Spain The results of the research show how in the context of the application of neoliberal policies, citizen participation becomes the trigger for new conflicts between institutions and citizens. In this sense, it is worth noting how, in practice, institutions in their capacity as experts and not willing to dis-empower themselves, …

Rozwój regionalny w ujęciu komparatywnym - na przykładzie Dolnego Śląska, Opolszczyzny i Górnego Śląska. Poziom rozwoju – analiza wybranych aspektów

2015

Artykuł zawiera analizę porównawczą poziomu rozwoju trzech polskich województw: dolnośląskiego, opolskiego i śląskiego. Za pomocą opracowanego miernika rozwoju regionalnego, autor analizuje cztery główne komponenty rozwoju – gospodarka, konkurencyjność i innowacje, kapitał ludzki, kapitał społeczny i jakość życia.

How to Cope with Declining Small Urban Centres? - The Finnish Regional Centre Programme in perspective

2004

The severe depression which Finland suffered in the early 1990´s as well as the subsequent economic developments saw Finland faced not only with high unemployment and rising income disparities but also with deepening regional imbalance. As a handful of larger cities grew, many others either coped or declined altogether. In 2000 the Finnish government launched the Regional Centre Programme (RCP). Through the development of a regional network of different sized growth centres based on their particular strengths, expertise and specialization, the original purpose of the programme was not only to find new sources of economic growth but to find ways of spreading growth more evenly across region…

Innovations in regional development policy of the OECD and European

2010

In the seventies the policies of regional economic development in the OECD and in Europe were joined by the correction of economic (growth rates of GDP and income unbalanced) and technical differences and by inadequate allocations of human, financial, and infrastructural resources. Regional policies were based on the following points: a)Massive financial assistance (to develop infrastructures and public services) to the poorest regions; b)Creating artificial poles of economic development at regional level; c)Creation ex-nihilo of technology; d)Attempts to keep alive in declining industries to protect local employment. After twenty years of operations the results have been disastrous, and ma…

Alueellisen elinikäisen ohjauksen kehittäminen : viestintä ja jatkuva oppiminen

2018

Raportissa jatketaan aiemmin aloitettua elinikäisen ohjauksen alueel- lisen koordinaation tarkastelua. Empiirinen aineisto koostuu kyselyai- neistosta, johon ovat vastanneet alueelliset ryhmät. Aineiston perus- teella ELO-ryhmien toiminta näyttää kokonaisuutena vakiintuneen alueilla ja ryhmien edustajat ovat sitoutuneita alueellisen toiminnan kehittämiseen. Keskeisenä haasteena on ELO-ryhmien erilaiset toi- mintaedellytykset alueilla ja ohjaushenkilöstön täydennyskoulutuksen kansallinen koordinaatio. Haasteena on alueellisen ohjauksen yhteis- työn koordinaatio tulevan maakuntauudistuksen edetessä, ja osa ryhmistä on jo integroinut ohjauksen yhteistyön kehittämisen valmis- teilla oleviin hal…

Assessment of cross-flow filtration as microalgae harvesting technique prior to anaerobic digestion: Evaluation of biomass integrity and energy demand

2018

[EN] In the present study, the effect of cross-flow filtration (CFF) on the overall valorization of Chlorella spp. microalgae as biogas was assessed. The effect of CFF on microalgae cell integrity was quantified in terms of viability which was correlated with the anaerobic biodegradability. The viability dropped as the biomass concentration increased, whereas anaerobic biodegradability increased linearly with the viability reduction. It was hypothesized that a stress-induced release and further accumulation of organic polymers during CFF increased the flux resistance which promoted harsher shear-stress conditions. Furthermore, the volume reduction as the concentration increased entailed an …
