Anticoagulant drugs in noncompaction: A mandatory therapy?
2008
BACKGROUND: Noncompaction of left ventricular myocardium is a rare congenital cardiomyopathy resulting from an incomplete myocardial morphogenesis that leads to the persistence of the embryonic myocardium. This condition is characterized by a thin compacted epicardial and an extremely thickened endocardial layer with prominent trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses. It is not clear, in noncompaction of myocardium, whether intertrabecular recesses could be responsible for thrombi formation and thromboembolic complications. METHODS: The prevalence of stroke and echocardiographic finding of thrombus was evaluated in a continuous series of 229 patients (men and women) affected by nonc…
Identification of optimal device combinations for the chimney endovascular aneurysm repair technique within the PERICLES registry
2018
Abstract Objective The ideal stent combination for chimney endovascular aneurysm repair remains undetermined. Therefore, we sought to identify optimal aortic and chimney stent combinations that are associated with the best outcomes by analyzing the worldwide collected experience in the PERformance of chImney technique for the treatment of Complex aortic pathoLogiES (PERICLES) registry. Methods The PERICLES registry was reviewed for patients with pararenal aortic disease electively treated from 2008 to 2014. Eleven different aortic devices were identified with three distinct subgroups: group A (n = 224), nitinol/polyester; group B (n = 105), stainless steel/polyester; and group C (n = 69), n…
Replacement therapy for bleeding episodes in factor VII deficiency: A prospective evaluation
2013
Patients with inherited factor VII (FVII) deficiency display different clinical phenotypes requiring ad hoc management. This study evaluated treatments for spontaneous and traumatic bleeding using data from the Seven Treatment Evaluation Registry (STER). One-hundred one bleeds were analysed in 75 patients (41 females; FVII coagulant activity <1-20%). Bleeds were grouped as haemarthroses (n=30), muscle/subcutaneous haematomas (n=16), epistaxis (n=12), gum bleeding (n=13), menorrhagia (n=16), central nervous system (CNS; n=9), gastrointestinal (GI; n=2) and other (n=3). Of 93 evaluable episodes, 76 were treated with recombinant, activated FVII (rFVIIa), eight with fresh frozen plasma (FFP), s…
Outcomes of Patients With Asymptomatic Aortic Stenosis Followed Up in Heart Valve Clinics
2018
International audience; Importance - The natural history and the management of patients with asymptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) have not been fully examined in the current era. Objective - To determine the clinical outcomes of patients with asymptomatic AS using data from the Heart Valve Clinic International Database. Design, setting, and participants - This registry was assembled by merging data from prospectively gathered institutional databases from 10 heart valve clinics in Europe, Canada, and the United States. Asymptomatic patients with an aortic valve area of 1.5 cm2 or less and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) greater than 50% at entry were considered for the prese…
Childhood and Adolescence Cancers in the Palermo Province (Southern Italy): Ten Years (2003-2012) of Epidemiological Surveillance
2018
Italy has one of the highest paediatric cancer incidence rates in Europe. We compared cancer incidence and survival rates in children (0&ndash
The first report of the Italian Migraine Registry (I-GRAINE).
2022
Italian Migraine Registry (I-GRAINE) is a multicenter (n = 38), prospective, observational, non-interventional study aimed at providing big data on migraine to ensure proper clinical disease management, according to scientific, and sustainability criteria. We enrolled consecutive patients affected by episodic or chronic migraine according to the systematic random method. Information on sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, migraine features, patient's journey, and healthcare resource use were gathered using face-to-face interviews. On the date of 31 December 2021, we enrolled 231 patients at 12 headache centers. Most of them were women (84.4%), with high migraine frequency (9.6 +/- 6.…
The Use of Computer Navigation in Total Hip Arthroplasty Is Associated with a Reduced Rate of Revision for Dislocation
2021
BACKGROUND: The use of computer navigation has been shown to produce more accurate cup positioning when compared with non-navigated total hip arthroplasty (THA), but so far there is only limited evidence to show its effect on clinical outcomes. The present study analyzed data from the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry to assess the impact of computer navigation on the rates of all-cause revision and revision for dislocation following THA. METHODS: Data for all non-navigated and navigated primary THAs performed for osteoarthritis in Australia from January 1, 2009, to December 31, 2019, were examined to assess the rate of revision. We analyzed the effects …
Procedural, Functional and Prognostic Outcomes Following Recanalization of Coronary Chronic Total Occlusions. Results of the Iberian Registry.
2019
Introduction and objectives: There is current controversy regarding the benefits of percutaneous recanalization (PCI) of chronic total coronary occlusions (CTO). Our aim was to determine acute and follow-up outcomes in our setting. Methods: Two-year prospective registry of consecutive patients undergoing PCI of CTO in 24 centers. Results: A total of 1000 PCIs of CTO were performed in 952 patients. Most were symptomatic (81.5%), with chronic ischemic heart disease (59.2%). Previous recanalization attempts had been made in 15%. The mean SYNTAX score was 19.5 +/- 10.6 and J-score was > 2 in 17.3%. A retrograde procedure was performed in 92 patients (9.2%). The success rate was 74.9% and was hi…
Epidemiological studies of cancer in aircrew.
2009
Exposure to cosmic ionising radiation, in addition to other specific occupational risks, is of concern to aircrew members. Epidemiological studies provide an objective way to assess the health of this occupational group. We systematically reviewed the epidemiological literature on health of aircrew members since 1990, focusing on cancer as the endpoint of interest. Sixty-five relevant publications were identified and reviewed. Whereas overall cancer incidence and mortality was generally lower than in the comparison population, consistently elevated risks were reported for breast cancer incidence in female aircrew members and for melanoma in both male and female aircrew members. Brain cancer…
Ejection Fraction by Echocardiography for a Selective Use of Magnetic Resonance After Infarction
2020
[EN] Background Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) permits robust risk stratification of discharged ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction patients, but its indiscriminate use in all cases is not feasible. We evaluated the utility of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) by echocardiography for a selective use of CMR after ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction. Methods Echocardiography and CMR were performed in 1119 patients discharged for ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction included in a multicenter registry. The prognostic power of CMR beyond echocardiography-LVEF was assessed using adjusted C statistic, net reclassification improvement index, and integrated discriminati…
