Increasing early ambulation disability in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage survivors

2017

ObjectiveTo evaluate temporal trends in early ambulatory status in patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).MethodsAll patients with ICH between 1985 and 2011 were prospectively registered in a population-based registry in Dijon, France, and included in the study. Outcomes of ICH survivors were assessed at discharge from their stay in an acute care ward with the use of a 4-grade ambulation scale. Time trends in ambulation disability and place of discharge were analyzed in 3 periods (1985–1993, 1994–2002, and 2003–2011). Multivariable ordinal and logistic regression models were applied.ResultsFive hundred thirty-one patients with ICH were registered, of whom 200 (37.7%) died …

iScore for predicting institutional care after ischemic stroke: a population-based study.

2015

Background We assessed whether the iScore could predict the need for poststroke institutional care. Methods Patients with acute ischemic stroke living in Dijon, France, were recorded between 2006 and 2011, using a population-based stroke registry. The iScore was calculated for each patient. A logistic regression model was used to assess the performance of the iScore for predicting the need for placement in a care institution. The discrimination and calibration of the model were assessed using the c statistic and the Hosmer–Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test, respectively. Results Of the 1199 patients recorded, 124 were excluded because of early death and 95 because of missing for variables inclu…

Clinical Outcome and Subjective Quality of Life after Photodynamic Therapy in Patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration

2005

PURPOSE. Whereas the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in preventing the progression of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is established, its effect on quality of life is under discussion. METHODS. All patientswho underwent PDT during 2000 and 2001 at the University Eye Hospital of Mainz were interviewed using a standardized 82-item questionnaire on quality of life and patient satisfaction in ophthalmologic patients. Information was assessed in terms of 82 questions; global scores ranging from 1.0 (optimum self-estimated quality of life) to 4.0 (worst) were derived. Cataract patients' scores were used to characterize the ARMD patients' subjective outcome; the latter were then rel…

Management of rectal cancers in relation to treatment guidelines: a population-based study comparing Italian and French patients

2014

Few studies have investigated rectal cancer management at the population level. We compared how rectal cancers diagnosed in Italy (2003-2005) and France (2005) were managed, and evaluated the extent to which management adhered to European guidelines.Samples of 3938 Italian and 2287 French colorectal cancer patients were randomly extracted from 8 and 12 cancer registries respectively. Rectal cancer patients (860 Italian, 559 French) were analysed. Logistic regression models estimated odds ratios (ORs) of being treated with curative intent, receiving sphincter-saving surgery, and receiving preoperative radiotherapy.Similar proportions of Italian and French patients were treated with curative …

Antibiotic Coating of the Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AMS 800): Is it Worthwhile?

2016

Objective To investigate the impact of the antibiotic coating InhibiZone on the infection and explantation rates of the AMS 800 in comparison to the AMS 800 without InhibiZone. Materials and Methods We retrospectively identified 305 patients with an AMS 800 in a multicenter cohort study. Patients were subsequently divided into InhibiZone and without InhibiZone-coated groups. Infection and explantation rates were analyzed by univariate and consecutively by multivariate logistic regression adjusted to variable risk factors. The infection-free interval was estimated by Kaplan-Meier plot and compared by the log-rank test. A P value below .05 was considered statistically significant. Results We …

Does concomitant diabetes affect treatment responses in overactive bladder patients?

2013

Summary Aims To compare the efficacy and tolerability of a muscarinic receptor antagonist, darifenacin, in the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB) patients with concomitant diabetes as compared with those without comorbidities. Methods Post hoc exploratory analysis of a published, large, non-interventional study in OAB patients treated with darifenacin including 532 diabetics and 1315 controls. Associations of diabetes with treatment responses were evaluated by multiple regression models. Results Diabetics (largely type 2 patients) and controls differed in baseline age, body weight, duration of OAB symptoms and presence of comedications. However, they exhibited similar OAB symptom episode…

Relationship among Corneal Biomechanics, Refractive Error, and Axial Length

2014

Purpose To evaluate the relationship between different ocular and corneal biomechanical parameters in emmetropic and ametropic healthy white children. Methods This study included 293 eyes of 293 healthy Spanish children (135 boys and 158 girls), ranging in age from 6 to 17 years. Subjects were divided according to the refractive error: control (emmetropia, 99 children), myopia (100 children), and hyperopia (94 children) groups. In all cases, corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF) were evaluated with the Ocular Response Analyzer system. Axial length (AL) and mean corneal power were also measured by partial coherence interferometry (IOLMaster), and central corneal thickne…

Lung ultrasound in internal medicine efficiently drives the management of patients with heart failure and speeds up the discharge time

2017

Lung ultrasound (LUS) is a valid tool for the assessment of heart failure (HF) through the quantification of the B-lines. This study in HF patients aims to evaluate if LUS: (1) can accelerate the discharge time; (2) can efficiently drive diuretic therapy dosage; and (3) may have better performance compared to the amino-terminal portion of B type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels in monitoring HF recovery. A consecutive sample of 120 HF patients was admitted from the Emergency Department (ED) to the Internal Medicine Department (Verona University Hospital). The Chest X-ray (CXR) group underwent standard CXR examination on admission and discharge. The LUS group underwent LUS on admission…

Quality of partnership in patients with erectile dysfunction after sildenafil treatment.

2001

OBJECTIVE A comprehensive investigation on the quality of partnership of male patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) after treatment with sildenafil vs. untreated patients, as perceived by both the patients and their female partners. METHODS This report describes an observational, cross-sectional exploratory study comparing ED patients responsive to sildenafil with ED patients prior to therapy. Assessments included the 'International Index of Erectile Function' (IIEF) and the 'Partnerschaftsfragebogen' (PFB), a partnership questionnaire used in German-speaking countries. The comparability of the two study groups was examined using a stepwise logit model. Significant intergroup differences …

Association between breastfeeding duration and cognitive development, autistic traits and ADHD symptoms: a multicenter study in Spain

2017

BACKGROUND: Several studies have related longer breastfeeding duration to better intellectual performance in children. By contrast, few studies have investigated the potential protective effects of breastfeeding against behavioral problems such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, and even fewer on autism spectrum disorders (ASD) traits. METHODS: We examined the association between breastfeeding duration and cognitive development, attention, ADHD symptoms, and autistic traits using data from the INMA Project, a Spanish multicenter birth-cohort study, and taking into account the intensity of breastfeeding. Duration of any, predominant, and exclusive breastfeeding was …
