Multivariate regression analysis applied to the calibration of equipment used in pig meat classification in Romania.

2016

This paper highlights the statistical methodology used in a dissection experiment carried out in Romania to calibrate and standardize two classification devices, OptiGrade PRO (OGP) and Fat-o-Meat'er (FOM). One hundred forty-five carcasses were measured using the two probes and dissected according to the European reference method. To derive prediction formulas for each device, multiple linear regression analysis was performed on the relationship between the reference lean meat percentage and the back fat and muscle thicknesses, using the ordinary least squares technique. The root mean squared error of prediction calculated using the leave-one-out cross validation met European Commission (EC…

Objective A short questionnaire which can be applied for assessing patient satisfaction in different contexts and different countries is to be developed. Methods Six items addressing tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, and communication were analysed. The first five items stem from SERVQUAL (SERVice QUALity), the last stems from the discussion about SERVQUAL. The analyses were performed with data from 12 surveys conducted in six different countries (England, Finland, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Spain) covering two different conditions (type 2 diabetes, stroke). Sample sizes for included participants are 247 in England, 160 in Finland, 231 in Germany, 152 in Gre…

Association between odontoma size, age and gender: Multivariate analysis of retrospective data

2019

Background The variety of characteristics related to odontoma research, including an unexplored one such as size, merits a multivariate approach that allows the adequate drawing of inferences with pertinent conclusions. The objective of this study is to establish the possible association between some characteristics related to the odontoma, tumor size among them. Material and methods The sociodemographic characteristics of 60 patients were evaluated. Diagnosis, size, location, type of treatment performed, and prognosis were determined. These data were analyzed descriptively and through multivariate models. Results Thirty-four compound and 26 complex odontomas in 32 men and 28 women were obs…

Prediction of chromatographic properties of organophosphorus insecticides by molecular connectivity

2000

A study is reported of the relationship between theR F values for a group of organophosphorus insecticides obtained by thin layer chromatography and a series of topological descriptors. By using multivariate regression, the corresponding connectivity functions were obtained, which had been selected on the basis of their respective statistical parameters: multiple correlation coefficient (r), standard error of estimate (s), F-Snedecor values and statistical significance (Student’s t). Regression analysis of the connectivity functions can predict the elution behaviour of any structurally similar derivative of this group of compounds with different stationary and mobile phases. Determination of vinegar acidity by attenuated total reflectance infrared measurements through the use of second-order absorbance-pH matrices and par…

2007

Univariate (zero-order), multivariate (first-order) and multiway (second-order) calibrations were assayed for the determination of vinegar acidity using a mechanized procedure based upon vibrational spectroscopy and the emerging multicommutation methodology. The second-order methodology relies on the use of a flow system based on multicommutation and binary sampling. The flow network comprises a set of three-way solenoid valves, computer-controlled to provide facilities to handle the sample and to generate a time-dependent pH gradient using two carrier solutions. The procedure is based on the volumetric fraction variation approach that maintains the same volume of sample solution and dynami…

Estimating brain connectivity when few data points are available: Perspectives and limitations

2017

Methods based on the use of multivariate autoregressive modeling (MVAR) have proved to be an accurate and flexible tool for the estimation of brain functional connectivity. The multivariate approach, however, implies the use of a model whose complexity (in terms of number of parameters) increases quadratically with the number of signals included in the problem. This can often lead to an underdetermined problem and to the condition of multicollinearity. The aim of this paper is to introduce and test an approach based on Ridge Regression combined with a modified version of the statistics usually adopted for these methods, to broaden the estimation of brain connectivity to those conditions in …

Health literacy of pregnant women and duration of breastfeeding maintenance: a feasibility study

2020

Research the association between health literacy (HL) and exclusive breastfeeding at 4-months postpartum.Despite the benefits of breastfeeding (BF), its rates are low worldwide. Among the reasons for abandonment is the level of maternal education. Maternal education has been associated with HL, but evidence between HL and BF maintenance is limited.A cross-sectional study. The sample compromised 229 nursing mothers recruited from January 2018 to the end of December 2018 at Spain by systematic sampling method. Women were interviewed postpartum on parameters associated with the start and continuation of BF up to 4 months postpartum. Multivariate logistic regression models to explain exposure va…

Combination of mid- and near-infrared spectroscopy for the determination of the quality properties of beers

2006

Abstract The combination of infrared (MIR) and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been employed for the determination of important quality parameters of beers, such as original and real extract and alcohol content. A population of 43 samples obtained from the Spanish market and including different types of beer, was evaluated. For each technique, spectra were obtained in triplicate. In the case of NIR a 1 mm pathlength quartz flow cell was used, whereas attenuated total reflectance measurements were used in MIR. Cluster hierarchical analysis was employed to select calibration and validation data sets. The calibration set was composed of 15 samples, thus leaving 28 for validation. A critic…

Partial least squares X-ray fluorescence determination of trace elements in sediments from the estuary of Nerbioi-Ibaizabal River.

2010

The feasibility of partial least squares (PLS) regression modeling of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectra of estuarine sediments has been evaluated as a tool for rapid trace element content monitoring. Multivariate PLS calibration models were developed to predict the concentration of Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, V and Zn in sediments collected from different locations across the estuary of the Nerbioi-Ibaizabal River (Metropolitan Bilbao, Bay of Biscay, Basque Country). The study was carried out on a set of 116 sediment samples, previously lyophilized and sieved with a particle size lower than 63 microm. Sample reference data were obtained by inductively coupled plasma mass …

Multisite musculoskeletal pain trajectories from midlife to old age : a 28-year follow-up of municipal employees

2018

ObjectivesWe studied the developmental trajectories of multisite musculoskeletal pain (MSP) to learn whether pain in midlife persists to old age, and whether pain trajectories associate with midlife work or lifestyle exposures or retirement from work.MethodsMunicipal employees aged 44–58 years were studied in 1981 (n=6257) with follow-ups in 1985, 1992, 1997 and 2009. Pain in the neck, low back, and upper and lower limbs was assessed in each survey. Trajectories of the number (0–4) of pain sites were defined using growth mixture modelling (n=3093). Workload, lifestyle and morbidity were elicited by questionnaire and retirement from registries. Associations of baseline factors with pain traj…
