A novel technique for the CMRR improvement in a portable ECG system

2017

This paper presents a new technique to improve the quality of the ECG signals, increasing the Common Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR). We developed a portable wireless Bluetooth ECG system able to acquire 12 leads, communicating with Smartphones and PCs. Many experiments have been made for measuring CMRR decay due to the difference on skin-electrodes impedances, the asymmetries of the amplifiers input stages and external components. Using some digital potentiometers, the system is able to compensate for these, increasing the CMRR of about 18 dB.

Influence of the evolutionary optimization parameters on the optimal topology

2016

Topological optimization can be considered as one of the most general types of structural optimization. Between all known topological optimization techniques, the Evolutionary Structural Optimization represents one of the most efficient and easy to implement approaches. Evolutionary topological optimization is based on a heuristic general principle which states that, by gradually removing portions of inefficient material from an assigned domain, the resulting structure will evolve towards an optimal configuration. Usually, the initial continuum domain is divided into finite elements that may or may not be removed according to the chosen efficiency criteria and other parameters like the spee…

The Intention-to-Treat Effect of Bridging Treatments in the Setting of Milan Criteria–In Patients Waiting for Liver Transplantation

2019

In patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) meeting the Milan criteria (MC), the benefit of locoregional therapies (LRTs) in the context of liver transplantation (LT) is still debated. Initial biases in the selection between treated and untreated patients have yielded conflicting reported results. The study aimed to identify, using a competing risk analysis, risk factors for HCC-dependent LT failure, defined as pretransplant tumor-related delisting or posttransplant recurrence. The study was registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov (identification number NCT03723304). In order to offset the initial limitations of the investigated population, an inverse probability of treatment weighting (IP…

The extent of HLA-DR expression on HLA-DR+Tregs allows the identification of patients with clinically relevant borderline rejection

2013

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) were shown to be involved into the pathogenesis of acute rejection after transplantation. The suppressive activity of the total regulatory T cell pool depends on its percentage of highly suppressive HLA-DR(+) -Treg cells. Therefore, both the suppressive activity of the total Treg pool and the extent of HLA-DR expression of HLA-DR(+) -Tregs (MFI HLA-DR) were estimated in non transplanted volunteers, patients with end-stage renal failure (ESRF), healthy renal transplant patients with suspicion on rejection, due to sole histological Bord-R or sole acute renal failure (ARF), and patients with clinically relevant borderline rejection (Bord-R and ARF). Compared to patie…

Endothelin-1 and endothelin receptor status in kidney transplants undergoing acute rejection.

1999

Abstract Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a potent vasoconstrictor with vasopressor and mitogenic effects. Blood samples were collected from 21 renal transplant patients undergoing acute rejection at the time of diagnostic kidney biopsy: there were 20 men and one woman, mean age 35.6 years. All patients were on triple immunosuppressive therapy with cyclosporine A, azathioprine and methylprednisolone. Twenty living kidney donors pre-uninephrectomy (11 men and nine women, mean age 34 years) served as controls. Control kidney was obtained from fresh autopsy material and normal kidney tissue from nephrectomies for malignancy. Mean plasma ET-1 was significantly increased at 1.56±0.2 pg ml −1 during acute …

Load frequency regulation using observer based non-linear sliding mode control

2019

Abstract In this paper, the generalized extended state observer (GESO) and non-linear sliding mode control (SMC) are merged together to study the frequency deviation problem in multi-area power system. In study, the GESO is used not only for state and disturbance estimation but also for disturbance rejection of the system. The said observer ensures accurate estimation of the actual states leading to convergence of estimation error to zero. The non-linear SMC is used to increase the damping ratio of the system whenever, any perturbations occurs. The proposed observer based controller is compared with an existing two-layer active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) and also validated on larg…

The designer cytokine hyper-IL-6 mediates growth inhibition and GM-CSF-dependent rejection of B16 melanoma cells.

2000

The low immunogenic B16 melanoma cell line was transfected with a mammalian expression vector containing the complementary DNA for a sIL-6R/IL-6 fusion protein, termed Hyper-IL-6 (H-IL-6), which was shown to have biological activities at 100-1000-fold lower concentrations than IL-6 in combination with sIL-6R. The secreted p84 glycoprotein was detected in the supernatant of transfected cells and was fully active on BAF3/gp130 cells, which respond to IL-6/sIL-6R but not to IL-6 alone. Administration of recombinant H-IL-6 to C57BL/6 mice resulted in a prolonged acute phase protein gene expression indicating long systemic persistence of the fusion protein. Transfected B16 cells (B16/H-IL6 cells…

Avoiding Boundary Effects in Wang-Landau Sampling

2003

A simple modification of the ``Wang-Landau sampling'' algorithm removes the systematic error that occurs at the boundary of the range of energy over which the random walk takes place in the original algorithm.

CD4 monoclonal antibody VIT4 in human alloimmune response in vitro and in vivo.

1996

In the present report the immunosuppressive effects of the murine anti-human CD4 monoclonal antibody (mAb) VIT4 on human alloimmune response in vitro were analyzed. Moreover, the antibody was tested for its activity to prolong allograft survival in seven patients with steroid-refractory allograft rejection. VIT4 inhibited the proliferative response to alloantigens in the mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) in a dose-dependent manner. At concentrations of 1 and 10 micrograms/ml VIT4 blocked MLR by 55 +/- 11% and 77 +/- 1%, respectively. Also alloantigen-specific proliferation of in vitro- generated memory T cells was dose-dependently reduced to 23 +/- 1% at a VIT4 concentration of 100 micrograms…

A complex case of fatal calciphylaxis in a female patient with hyperparathyroidism secondary to end stage renal disease of graft and coexistence of h…

2012

Background: Calciphylaxis is a potentially fatal complication of persistent secondary hyperparathyroidism; its cause is still not clear. Unfortunately there is no close relation in severity of clinical picture, serological and pathological alteration. For this reason the prognosis is difficult to establish. Administration of sodium thiosulphate may reduce the precipitation of calcium crystals and improve the general clinical conditions before surgical parathyroidectomy, which seems the only therapeutic approach able to reduce the mortality risk in these patients. Methods and Results: A 60 year old female patient suffering from End Renal Stage Disease, on haemodialysis from 2001 due to the o…
