Interactions surface continentale/atmosphère : l'expérience HAPEX-Sahel
1994
Religious spaces as continually evolving modernities: Forms of encounter with modernity in Christian Orthodoxy and Islam
2022
The present study deals with the encounter with modernity in two neighbouring religious spaces: Christian Orthodoxy and Islam. Relying on Eisenstadt’s theory about multiple modernities and on its further developments by Thomas Mergel and Kristina Stoeckl, Islamic and Christian-Orthodox dynamics in relation to the challenges of modernity are examined under two aspects: first, the decoupling between religion and culture as elaborated by Olivier Roy, and second, the development of modernist and fundamentalist currents as phenomena of modernity. The study contributes to the sketching of the profile of Islamic and the Christian-Orthodox modernities, pointing both to some of the commonalities and…
Communication structure and collective actions in social media
2010
In this paper I present results a study of different types of social media communication and networking channels that allow for collective action (CA): Twitter, Jaiku / Qaiku, Ning and Facebook. My preliminary findings indicate, that the visual outlining and the structure of communication create different kinds of collectivity and collective actions. A status stream is effective for simple and fast repetitive mass actions and for individual mass broadcasting, while channels and threads are needed as a backchannel for more complicated, coordinated and iterative tasks and support a sense of community. When planning collective action on the Internet, ranging from citizen participation to marke…
The Southern African Development Community (SADC): An Analytical Overview of Its History, Policies and Institutional Framework
2017
This chapter gives fundamental background information about the history and development of regionalism in Southern Africa and about the current state of the SADC as a modern regional integration organisation. In terms of an analytical overview, Muntschick reflects briefly on the formation, character and objectives of the region’s old regionalisms such as the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), the Frontline States (FLS) and particularly the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference (SADCC) as predecessors of the SADC. Also, this chapter turns to the new regionalism and provides detailed information on the SADC as an organisation, its member states, key agenda and central poli…
Probabilities of conditionals and previsions of iterated conditionals
2019
Abstract We analyze selected iterated conditionals in the framework of conditional random quantities. We point out that it is instructive to examine Lewis's triviality result, which shows the conditions a conditional must satisfy for its probability to be the conditional probability. In our approach, however, we avoid triviality because the import-export principle is invalid. We then analyze an example of reasoning under partial knowledge where, given a conditional if A then C as information, the probability of A should intuitively increase. We explain this intuition by making some implicit background information explicit. We consider several (generalized) iterated conditionals, which allow…
The Contemporary Contrade of Siena
2017
This chapter will provide the background information that is required in order to contextualise further analysis, doing so by outlining the main aspects of daily life within the contrade of Siena and the social and institutional organisation of those institutions. It proposes that their social order has to be interpreted in relation to the palio horse race, a festival which takes place biannually in Siena’s central square, and which is visited by a significant number of national and international tourists.
Electrophysiological evidence for heptameric stoichiometry of ion channels formed by Staphylococcus aureus alpha-toxin in planar lipid bilayers.
2000
Staphylococcal alpha-toxin forms homo-oligomeric channels in lipid bilayers and cell membranes. Here, we report that electrophysiological monitoring of single-channel function using a derivatized cysteine substitution mutant allows accurate determination of the subunit stoichiometry of the oligomer in situ. The electrophysiological phenotype of channels formed in planar lipid bilayers with the cysteine replacement mutant I7C is equal to that of the wild type. When pores were formed with I7C, alterations of several channel properties were observed upon modification with SH reagents. Decreases in conductance then occurred that were seen only as negative voltage was applied. At the level of si…
Delineation of the catalytic domain of Clostridium difficile toxin B-10463 to an enzymatically active N-terminal 467 amino acid fragment.
2006
Abstract In an attempt to directly approach the postulated toxic domain of Clostridium difficile 's TcdB-10463, eight subclones of different size and locations in the N-terminal third of the toxin were generated. Expression of these toxin fragments was checked in Western blots and the enzymatic activity of the expressed proteins was analyzed by glucosylating Ras related small GTP-binding proteins. Two polypeptides of 875 aa (TcdBc1–3) and 557 aa (TcdBc1-H) glucosylated their targets Rho, Rac and Cdc42 with the same activity and specificity as the holotoxin. In comparison 516 aa (TcdBc1-N) and 467 aa (TcdBc1-A) protein fragments exhibited highly reduced activity, while Tcdc1 and TcdB2–3 (aa …
Automated agent-based system for weather information
2009
Road accidents are well correlated with bad weather conditions. In traffic management, several strategies have been considered in order to reduce this kind of accidents. Weather problems can cause difficult situations for the traffic management decision-makers. They need to analyze and absorb a large quantity of information in order to solve some problems due to bad weather. An automated agent-based system is a good solution to help decision-makers in the management of weather information to road users in relation to traffic conditions. In this paper, a distributed system based in autonomous agents and rules for road weather information has been proposed. Also the detection procedure is expl…
