Vibrational properties of ZnTe at high pressures

2002

Raman spectra of ZnTe were measured under hydrostatic pressures up to 15 GPa at T = 300 K. Results for the frequencies of first- and second-order Raman features of the zincblende phase (0-9.5 GPa) are used to set up a rigid-ion model of the phonon dispersion relations under pressure. Calculated phonon densities of states, mode Gruneisen parameters and the thermal expansion coefficient as a function of pressure are discussed. The effect of pressure on the widths and intensities of Raman spectral features is considered. Raman spectra of high-pressure phases of ZnTe are reported. These spectra indicate the possible existence of a new phase near 13 GPa, intermediate between the cinnabar and ort…

β-process of supercooled o-terphenyl: a comparison of dielectrical and NMR data guided by mode-coupling theory

1990

Abstract According to predictions of mode-coupling theory of the liquid-glass transition, a Cole-Cole dynamical susceptibility is applied to the β-relaxation of supercooled o -terphenyl as studied by 2 H NMR spin-lattice relaxation and by dielectrical relaxation. A temperature-dependent amplitude (1- f ) is assumed for the β-process which yields a description of the NMR data consistent with the dielectrical data. The plateau value f separating the α- and β-processes in the two-step correlation function reveals a similar temperature dependence as compared to the Debye-Waller factor.

Influence of enhancement filters in apical bone loss measurement: A cone-beam computed tomography study

2016

Background The use of cone-beam computed tomography images (CBCT) providing a better assessment of bone injuries, although the sensibility of lesions measurement might be improved by the use of enhancement filters. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the influence of enhancement filters in apical bone loss measurement. Material and Methods Eighteen CBCT cases randomly selected of apical bone loss were evaluated. The analyses were carried out following the evaluation in axial, coronal and sagittal protocols, using enhancement filters as Hard, Normal, and Very Sharp. The variables were statistically analyzed by Friedman and Wilcoxon test, Spearman’s rho, and intraclass correlation coeffici…

Recognition in multicultural societies. Intergroup relations as second-order recognition

2015

Since the 1990s, the notion of social recognition has developed into a key concept for sociological theory. Recognition theory seems especially promising as a means of understanding intercultural conflicts, as the sociology of intercultural relations often addresses claims of recognition of a specific identity that is different from that of the main society. The aim of this article is to show that recognition theory can be used as a key concept in examining group inclusion in multicultural societies. Nevertheless, the existing theoretical approaches to recognition are insufficient for that purpose. Therefore, I develop my own approach to the recognition of minority groups as second-order re…

Protofibril formation of amyloid beta-protein at low pH via a non-cooperative elongation mechanism.

2005

Deposition of the amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) in senile or diffuse plaques is a distinctive feature of Alzheimer's disease. The role of Abeta aggregates in the etiology of the disease is still controversial. The formation of linear aggregates, known as amyloid fibrils, has been proposed as the onset and the cause of pathological deposition. Yet, recent findings suggest that a more crucial role is played by prefibrillar oligomeric assemblies of Abeta that are highly toxic in the extracellular environment. In the present work, the mechanism of protofibril formation is studied at pH 3.1, starting from a solution of oligomeric precursors. By combining static light scattering and photon correla…

On utilizing dependence-based information to enhance micro-aggregation for secure statistical databases

2011

Published version of an article in the journal: Pattern Analysis and Applications. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10044-011-0199-9 We consider the micro-aggregation problem which involves partitioning a set of individual records in a micro-data file into a number of mutually exclusive and exhaustive groups. This problem, which seeks for the best partition of the micro-data file, is known to be NP-hard, and has been tackled using many heuristic solutions. In this paper, we would like to demonstrate that in the process of developing micro-aggregation techniques (MATs), it is expedient to incorporate information about the dependence between the random variable…

External knowledge sourcing in different national settings: a comparison of electronics establishments in Britain and France

2004

04001; International audience; In a detailed comparison of matched samples of electronics establishments in Britain and France, this paper finds that the two samples of establishments were operating in distinctively different national labour markets for engineers and scientists, reflecting structural differences in national higher education systems and a far higher level of individual mobility between enterprises in Britain than is found in France. These differences were found to have very little effect on quantitative measures of establishments' external research interactions which tended to reflect other national-institutional differences such as continued government support for public la…

The emergence of a shared action ontology: building blocks for a theory.

2003

To have an ontology is to interpret a world. In this paper we argue that the brain, viewed as a representational system aimed at interpreting our world, possesses an ontology too. It creates primitives and makes existence assumptions. It decomposes target space in a way that exhibits a certain invariance, which in turn is functionally significant. We will investigate which are the functional regularities guiding this decomposition process, by answering to the following questions: What are the explicit and implicit assumptions about the structure of reality, which at the same time shape the causal profile of the brain's motor output and its representational deep structure, in particular of t…
