What makes learning and understanding in virtual teams so difficult?

2004

The ideas presented in this article are especially challenged by critical questions raised by the other authors in this special issue. One of the core questions throughout the different studies is whether participants in distributed learning groups are able to successfully work on a common task and achieve a type of interaction that leads them to educationally relevant higher-level discussion and learning. This article discusses the central findings of these studies in light of the recent research on computer-supported collaborative learning. At the beginning of the article, typical problems and challenges related to learning in virtual teams are described. In the end of the discussion, som…

Interaction among employees: how does learning take place in the social communities of the workplace and how might such learning be supervised?

2005

The purpose of the present study is to look at the senses in which everyday workplace interactions can be considered manifestations of learning at work and the ways in which such activity could be supervised. Our data consist of discussions between employees taped in two technology enterprises and three municipal youth centres, analysed from an ethnographical and an ethnomethodological perspective. The paper concludes with a discussion of how learning at work—seen as a contextual activity bound up with the work process itself and with the communities that operate within the work process—could be taken into account in the practices of fostering and supervising such learning.

Blogging as a research and educational tool: a three years experience

2008

Abstract Blogging can be also used to share knowledge in research and education. We have been using many blogs with the following purposes. One goal has been to raise awareness about research methods in the information technology field by supporting information exchange, collaboration, and cooperation between researchers. We have been using a common blog for 3 years to share inter- and intra disciplinary knowledge among us. We have also collected stories and interviewed colleagues and friends. An other goal is the use of blogs during our teaching experience as an instrument to support the exchange of knowledge with students. A comparison of the use of blogging is presented with positive and…

Cities and Skills for Integration: What Can Urban Planning do? Experiences and Reflections Between Public Spaces and Collective Interest for Urban an…

2018

Immigration and integration of foreign communities is a condition that strongly affects the form and the meaning of public space. In contexts that are new to the phenomenon, there may be an occasion to revise the protocols and models for the development of new spatial relationships, based on the presence of communities that are no longer homogeneous. The theme of urban regeneration due to the presence of migrant communities has been addressed in various ways and from different points of view, often focusing on the creation of urban spaces capable of improving livability, rarely with the creation of integration processes or the construction of new urban identities. However, a resilient point…

The implications of the local context in global virtual education

2012

This paper investigates how features in students’ everyday life influence their participation in online global collaboration, and it suggests that students’ local context should be recognised as a significant part of their educational space. In this exploratory case study of students engaged in a global online master’s programme, the discussion is organised under three main headings: the social, material, and cultural dimensions of students’ daily life. The paper shows how the influence of the students’ local contex…

Zn(II)-alloferon complexes - Similar sequence, different coordination modes, no antibacterial activity.

2020

Often, in the search for a highly defined scientific phenomenon, a different one becomes apparent. This was also the case of this work, in the scope of which we planned to search for metal-enhanced, novel antibacterial/ antifungal compounds. Instead, we denied the existence of such and revealed the details of the bioinorganic chemistry of Zn(II)-alloferon complexes. Zinc(II) complexes of alloferon 1 and 2, ligands with a sequential difference of one amino acid only, show a substantially different coordination pattern at physiological pH. In the case of Zn(II)-alloferon 1 species, a histamine-like binding mode is observed (N-terminal amine and imidazole of His-1) and the coordination sphere …

Timing in methods for studying psychosocial factors at work

2014

In the present chapter we focus on time lags in panel studies investigating psychosocial factors and stressor-strain relationships. First, a framework of theoretical reasons for choosing specific time lags is provided, which is based on the work by Frese and Zapf (Methodological issues in the study of work stress: objective vs. subjective measurement of work stress and the question of longitudinal studies. In: Cooper CL, Payne R (eds) Causes, coping and consequences of stress at work. Wiley, Chichester, pp 375–411, 1988). Although this theoretical framework provides a clear rationale for time intervals, researchers are frequently mistaken using it to derive appropriate time lags. Second, an…

Communicating with home, coping without home – Trusting to the mediating capacity of blogging

2021

Abstract In the early 21st century, blogs exploded onto the digital media scene and soon became a popular means of travel writing. However, rather than considering blogs as a straightforward tool to simply share stories and experiences, in this article, we set out to explore the role of blogs as a mediating technology (Verbeek, 2005a), especially during difficult times abroad. By analysing the blogs of expatriate Australians who were volunteers in Bangladesh in 2014/2015 as well as interviews with the bloggers, we are able to show how the blogs' affordances inform the coping process, highlighted, in particular, in an active and highly reflective engagement with the blog's unique situatednes…

Sources of stress and scholarly identity: the case of international doctoral students of education in Finland

2020

AbstractAlthough stressors and coping strategies have been examined in managing stress associated with doctoral education, stress continues to have a permeating and pernicious effect on doctoral students’ experience of their training and, by extension, their future participation in the academic community. International doctoral students have to not only effectively cope with tensions during their training and their socialization in their discipline but also address the values and expectations of higher education institutions in a foreign country. Considering the increase of international doctoral students in Finland, this study focuses on perceived sources of stress in their doctoral traini…
