21ST CENTURY SKILLS IN THE CONTEXT OF LIFE QUALITY
2020
The article addresses comparative qualitative content analysis as a part of the grounded theory research to explore the relationship between English language proficiency of economically active adults and their quality of life. Using comparative qualitative content analysis of the policy documents in respect of lifelong learning as main data collection method, the authors of the article aim to identify the relationship between the 21st century skills and indicators of life quality by comparing the sources that define the 21st century skills and analysing them in the context of the “8+1” dimensions of life quality offered by the European Union. The following research questions have been propo…
Agency and Learning in the Work of Software Professionals
2017
This chapter addresses software professionals’ agency and learning in work characterized by a need for innovative learning and fluency in renewing work practices. The study presented was conducted with software professionals in a medium-sized Finnish company producing digital business applications. We applied a mixed-method approach to data collection and analysis. Regarding professional agency, we found a range of opportunities to influence work-related matters. The professionals were primarily able to influence their working hours and the order of their work tasks, but had fewer opportunities to influence customer projects, or their salary. To some extent they were able to develop themsel…
Metadata to Support Data Warehouse Evolution
2009
The focus of this chapter is metadata necessary to support data warehouse evolution. We present the data warehouse framework that is able to track evolution process and adapt data warehouse schemata and data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes. We discuss the significant part of the framework, the metadata repository that stores information about the data warehouse, logical and physical schemata and their versions. We propose the physical implementation of multiversion data warehouse in a relational DBMS. For each modification of a data warehouse schema, we outline the changes that need to be made to the repository metadata and in the database.
Single imputation method of missing values in environmental pollution data sets
2006
Abstract Missing data represent a general problem in many scientific fields above all in environmental research. Several methods have been proposed in literature for handling missing data and the choice of an appropriate method depends, among others, on the missing data pattern and on the missing-data mechanism. One approach to the problem is to impute them to yield a complete data set. The goal of this paper is to propose a new single imputation method and to compare its performance to other single and multiple imputation methods known in literature. Considering a data set of PM 10 concentration measured every 2 h by eight monitoring stations distributed over the metropolitan area of Paler…
The Analysis of Auxological Data by Means of Nonlinear Multivariate Growth Curves
1999
In this paper we treat the problem to analyse a data set constituted by multivariate growth curves for different subjects; thus in this context we deal with 3-way data tables. Nevertheless, it is not possible using factorial techniques proposed to deal with 3-way data matrices, because the observations are generally not equally spaced; moreover a multilevel approach founded on polynomial models is not suitable to deal with intrinsic nonlinear models. We propose a non-factorial technique to analyse auxological data sets using an intrinsic nonlinear multivariate growth model with autocorrelated errors. The application to a real data set of growing children gave easily interpretable results.
Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria for the system 1-pentanol–1-propanol–water at 101.3 kPa
2001
Consistent vapor–liquid equilibrium data for the ternary system 1-pentanol–1-propanol–water is reported at 101.3 kPa at temperatures in the range of 362–393 K. The VLE data were satisfactorily correlated with UNIQUAC model. The authors wish to thank the Generalitat Valenciana (Spain) for the financial help of the Project GV-3174/95 and DGES for the financial aids of the Project PB96-0338.
"Table 4" of "Measurement of dielectron production in central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{\textit{s}}_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV"
2018
Data-to-cocktail ratio as a function of the invariant-mass. In the hadronic cocktail, random correlations of dielectrons from charm decays are assumed to simulate the effects of the interaction between charm quarks and the medium. The statistical and systematic uncertainties of data are represented by vertical bars and boxes.
Migration of Relational Database to Document-Oriented Database: Structure Denormalization and Data Transformation
2015
Relational databases remain the leading data storage technology. Nevertheless, many companies want to reduce operating expenses, to make scalable applications that use cloud computing technologies. Use of NoSQL database is one of the possible solutions, and it is forecasted that the NoSQL market will be growing at a CAGR of approximately 50 percent over the next five years. The paper offers a solution for quick data migration from a relational database into a document-oriented database. We have created semi-automatically two logical levels over physical data. Users can refine generated logical data model and configure data migration template for each needed document. Data migration features…
PDB: A pictorial database oriented to data analysis
1993
The paper describes a new pictorial database oriented to image analysis, implemented inside the MIDAS data analysis system. Pictorial databases need expressive data structures in order to represent a wide class of information from the numerical to the visual. The model of the database is relational; however, a full normalization is not achievable, owing to the complexity of the visual information. The paper reports the general design and notes on the software implementation. Preliminary experiments show the performance of the pictorial database. Copyright © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
