Group-level analysis on multiplayer game collaboration: how do the individuals shape the group interaction?

In this study, the aim was to examine how small-group collaboration is shaped by individuals interacting in a virtual multiplayer game. The data were collected from a design experiment in which six randomly divided groups of four university students played a voice-enhanced game lasting about 1 h. The ‘eScape’ game was a social action adventure developed as a part of the study. In the analysis of the video data, students' discourse functions during the game were analysed with content analytic methods for studying the nature of their interaction. Location theories and business location decision: A micro-spatial investigation of a nonmetropolitan area in Canada

This paper draws on location theories to statistically identify the relationship between the location of individual business establishments and the characterization of their local economic environment. Taking a micro-spatial perspective, the paper develops indicators from distance-based measures (DBM) to serve as independent variables in a discrete choice model (DCM). Aggregation of Risk Level Assessments Based on Fuzzy Equivalence Relation

The paper deals with the problem of aggregation of risk level assessments. We describe the technique of a risk level evaluation taking into account values of the risk level obtained for objects which are in some sense equivalent. For this purpose we propose to use the construction of a general aggregation operator based on the corresponding fuzzy equivalence relation. Numerical example of the investment risk level aggregation using an equivalence relation obtained on the basis of different macroeconomic factors for countries of one region is considered.

Forbidden words in symbolic dynamics

AbstractWe introduce an equivalence relation≃between functions from N to N. By describing a symbolic dynamical system in terms of forbidden words, we prove that the≃-equivalence class of the function that counts the minimal forbidden words of a system is a topological invariant of the system. We show that the new invariant is independent from previous ones, but it is not characteristic. In the case of sofic systems, we prove that the≃-equivalence of the corresponding functions is a decidable question. As a more special application, we show, by using the new invariant, that two systems associated to Sturmian words having “different slope” are not conjugate.

Periodic Groups Covered by Transitive Subgroups of Finitary Permutations or by Irreducible Subgroups of Finitary Transformations

Let X be either the class of all transitive groups of finitary permutations, or the class of all periodic irreducible finitary linear groups. We show that almost primitive X-groups are countably recognizable, while totally imprimitive X-groups are in general not countably recognizable. In addition we derive a structure theorem for groups all of whose countable subsets are contained in totally imprimitive X-subgroups. It turns out that totally imprimitive p-groups in the class X are countably recognizable.

Querying the Guarded Fragment with Transitivity

We study the problem of answering a union of Boolean conjunctive queries q against a database Δ, and a logical theory φ which falls in the guarded fragment with transitive guards (GF + TG). We trace the frontier between decidability and undecidability of the problem under consideration. Surprisingly, we show that query answering under GF2 + TG, i.e., the two-variable fragment of GF + TG, is already undecidable (even without equality), whereas its monadic fragment is decidable; in fact, it is 2exptime-complete in combined complexity and coNP-complete in data complexity. We also show that for a restricted class of queries, query answering under GF+TG is decidable. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Quasi Conjunction and Inclusion Relation in Probabilistic Default Reasoning

We study the quasi conjunction and the Goodman & Nguyen inclusion relation for conditional events, in the setting of probabilistic default reasoning under coherence. We deepen two recent results given in (Gilio and Sanfilippo, 2010): the first result concerns p-entailment from a family F of conditional events to the quasi conjunction C(S) associated with each nonempty subset S of F; the second result, among other aspects, analyzes the equivalence between p-entailment from F and p-entailment from C(S), where S is some nonempty subset of F. Combinatorics of Finite Words and Suffix Automata

The suffix automaton of a finite word is the minimal deterministic automaton accepting the language of its suffixes. The states of the suffix automaton are the classes of an equivalence relation defined on the set of factors. We explore the relationship between the combinatorial properties of a finite word and the structural properties of its suffix automaton. We give formulas for expressing the total number of states and the total number of edges of the suffix automaton in terms of special factors of the word.

Graph connectivity and monadic NP

Ehrenfeucht games are a useful tool in proving that certain properties of finite structures are not expressible by formulas of a certain type. In this paper a new method is introduced that allows the extension of a local winning strategy for Duplicator, one of the two players in Ehrenfeucht games, to a global winning strategy. As an application it is shown that graph connectivity cannot be expressed by existential second-order formulas, where the second-order quantification is restricted to unary relations (monadic NP), even, in the presence of a built-in linear order.
