Study on the correlation between knee osteoarthritis and anxiety in patients aged over 55
2020
Introduction. Osteoarthritis, which is a cause of chronic pain and disability with manifestation in any joint, with greater frequency in the joints of the lower limbs, upper limbs, but also at the spine level , affects around 250 million people in the entire world. This condition affects around 10% of the global population (18) and has an impressive impact on people, as it is one of the first 5 causes of disability. Material and method. The objectives of the treatment made by the patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis were: pain reduction, increased joint amplitude, increased muscle strength, increased muscle tone, increased quality of life and reintegration into the family and social …
Improving the Translational Medicine Process: Moving Patients From "End-Users" to "Engaged Collaborators".
2019
Translational medicine works through the definition of unmet medical needs, their understanding and final resolution. In this complex and multi-disciplinary process patients have always been regarded as "end-users" or no more than "data provider." Considering that the translational practice is nowadays highly inefficient (i.e., large intellectual and economical resources are wasted with limited impact on people health) here we propose to reverse the process: start from patients, engage them, and keep them at the center. A new partnership needs to be formed between the patients and the health care professionals, as well as the treating physicians, to make the most out of the current "health …
INFORMACIÓN Y EXPOSICIÓN INDIRECTA PARA REDUCIR ESTEREOTIPOS HACIA EL ENVEJECIMIENTO
2016
Abstract.Purpose: The Image that society has about older people has been built on a base of stereotypes, far away from reality. This social image will have a determinant influence on attitudes and behaviors from all those people related with them, including health care professionals. It should be mandatory to eradicate negative stereotypes against aging during university formation, and in this practice get sensitive professionals who will attend people in their final state of life. Method: the treatment “Information plus indirect experience” was set throw the viewing of the short film “Como un Rolling” (Castilla, 2013). This film exposes the concept of active aging, and had the purpose to b…
Thermostabilization of BSA in TMAO Water Mixtures by Infrared Spectroscopy
2019
Background:Trimethylamine-N-Oxide (TMAO) is a small organic molecule derived from the metabolism of L-carnitine and choline after ingestion of animal food. TMAO has many functions such as electron acceptor, an osmolyte, stabilizer of macromolecules folding. It seems that TMAO plays an important role in nature but, in humans, it is a remnant of the evolution of the osmolyte system. Objective:The present paper is addressed on the study of thermal stability of hydrated Bovine Serum Albumins (BSA) in the presence of water and TMAO water solution by means of InfraRed spectroscopy. In particular, this work has investigated the protein amide I spectral regions, which is sensitive to protein seconda…
Identité narrative, déprise et vécu du vieillissement
2018
Unlock ways to share data on peer review
2020
Peer review is the defining feature of scholarly communication. In a 2018 survey of more than 11, 000 researchers, 98% said that they considered peer review important or extremely important for ensuring the quality and integrity of scholarly communication.

AbstractAs the global health crisis unfolded, many academic conferences moved online in 2020. This move has been hailed as a positive step towards inclusivity in its attenuation of economic, physical, and legal barriers and effectively enabled many individuals from groups that have traditionally been underrepresented to join and participate. A number of studies have outlined how moving online made it possible to gather a more global community and has increased opportunities for individuals with various constraints, e.g., caregiving responsibilities.Yet, the mere existence of online conferences is no guarantee that everyone can attend and participate meaningfully. In fact, many elements of a…
Modeling of Particle Number Fluctuations in Entire Cells
2012
In a recent study we developed a method to model protein diffusion in cells [1], where special attention was given to generating from image data of the measured cell a realistic digital model cell in which protein dynamics were simulated. The method was shown to be well suited for modeling non-equilibrium situations that arise, e.g., in photobleaching experiments, and to be capable of producing more detailed information about protein motion than traditional modeling.Another experimental way to assess protein dynamics is to study fluctuations in the local protein number, as it is done, e.g., in fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), or in similar measurements that apply single-plane il…

The coronavirus pandemic has affected more than 150 million people, while over 3.25 million people have died from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). As there are no established therapies for COVID-19 treatment, drugs that inhibit viral replication are a promising target; specifically, the main protease (Mpro) that process CoV-encoded polyproteins serves as an Achilles heel for assembly of replication-transcription machinery as well as down-stream viral replication. In the search for potential antiviral drugs that target Mpro, a series of cembranoid diterpenes from the biologically active soft-coral genus Sarcophyton have been examined as SARS-CoV-2 Mpro inhibitors. Over 360 metabolite…

Hierarchy and centrality are two popular notions used to characterize the importance of entities in complex systems. Indeed, many complex systems exhibit a natural hierarchical structure, and centrality is a fundamental characteristic allowing to identify key constituents. Several measures based on various aspects of network topology have been proposed in order to quantify these concepts. While numerous studies have investigated whether centrality measures convey redundant information, how centrality and hierarchy measures are related is still an open issue. In this paper, we investigate the association between centrality and hierarchy using several correlation and similarity evaluation mea…
