Calculation of the chemical potential and the activity coefficient of two layers of CO2 adsorbed on a graphite surface.
2014
We study the adsorption of carbon dioxide at a graphite surface using the new Small System Method, and find that for the temperature range between 300 K and 550 K most relevant for CO2 separation; adsorption takes place in two distinct thermodynamic layers defined according to Gibbs. We calculate the chemical potential and the activity coefficient of both layers directly from the simulations. Based on thermodynamic relations, the entropy and enthalpy of the CO2 adsorbed layers are also obtained. Their values indicate that there is a trade-off between entropy and enthalpy when a molecule chooses for one of the two layers. The first layer is a densely packed monolayer of relatively constant e…
The journalOsteuropaas a forum for Russian–German academic dialogue
2014
This article focuses on the interdisciplinary, monthly academic journal Osteuropa as a mediator between Russian and German academic discourses, and as a tool for bringing Russian perspectives closer to German intellectual audiences. The historical overview provided in this paper shall show the actors involved in the development of the journal since its founding at the beginning of the twentieth century. The actor–network theory and the Bourdieusian concepts of field and habitus will be deployed to reveal the academic networks Osteuropa is involved in and the role of the actors in them. Osteuropa's Russian collaborative partners and joint publication projects are presented in the paper. The …
Reaching professional skills with the Final Master Thesis: Collaboration towards actual solutions
2019
[EN] In order to motivate the student through a professional experience, and to improve the teaching-learning process by letting the student gain experience, we implement a collaborative learning-through-service methodology. This method increases the student involvement level and the deep understanding of the tools. As a matter of example, we present the implementation of this method in the Final Master Thesis (FMTh) of the Master on Corporate Finance at the University of Valencia (UV). In these FMTh, students have to valuate an actual innovation developed by UV researchers (on chemistry, in this case) with the goal of helping them to transfer (sell) this innovation to the industry. This co…
Not Entirely Reliable: Private Scientific Organizations and Risk Regulation – The Case of Electromagnetic Fields
2013
Private scientific organizations exert a great deal of influence in the regulation of some technological risks. The high level of expertise of their members is arguably a good reason for them to participate in making and monitoring risk regulations, in order to adjust these to scientific progress. Nevertheless, there are also sound reasons why governments shouldn’t uncritically follow the views expressed by such organizations. Taking the role played by the International Commission on Non–Ionizing Radiation Protection in the regulation of electromagnetic fields as an illustrative example, this paper shows that private scientific organizations such as these are structurally less well suited t…
Estimating the size of the loan sharking market in Italy
2014
In the current economic crisis, the risk is so high that entrepreneurs, commercial activities and even families may turn to the illegal market to obtain liquidity. This article proposes an estimate of the size of the usury credit market in Italy. The estimate is based on the assumption, provided by Guiso1, that before coming to a moneylender the borrower seeks to obtain credit through official channels. The results of our estimates confirm the seriousness of the problem, but provide much lower data than those reported periodically by the media. It is estimated that 372,000 economic activities may have been potentially involved in the usury market in 2012. The volume of loans disbursed in th…
The Choice of Performance Measure Does Influence the Evaluation of Hedge Funds
2010
It is widely accepted that, when return distributions are non-normal, the use of the Sharpe ratio can lead to misleading conclusions. It is well documented that deviations of hedge fund return distributions from normality are statistically significant. The literature on performance evaluation that takes into account the non-normality of return distributions is a vast one. However, there is another stream of research that advocates that the choice of performance measure does not influence the evaluation of hedge funds. For example, Eling and Schuhmacher (2007) and Eling (2008) performed empirical studies and, judging by the values of rank correlations, concluded that the choice of performanc…
Is lithium implicated in tobacco addiction?
2016
IntroductionTobacco is a source of mineral elements that can affect human health in various ways, such as lithium, which is used as a psychiatric medication. Lithium salts are used as mood-stabilizing drugs and indicated in the treatment of manic-depressive psychosis.ObjectiveStudying the lithium content in tobacco over the smokers’plasma content and evaluate the potential role of lithium in tobacco addiction.MethodsA total of 18 different tobacco products (cigarettes, smokeless and water pipe tobacco) and 125 plasma samples (45 from smokers, 10 from ex-smokers and 70 from non-smokers) were collected to determinate the lithium content. Tobacco samples were digested with nitric acid and lith…
Response of membrane-bound ATPase of Micrococcus luteus to heat and ultraviolet light.
1976
It is shown that the properties of ATPase (EC 3.6.1.3) of Micrococcus luteus depend only to some extent on the state of the membrane to which it is attached. Its interaction with the membrane appears to be largely controlled by polar forces. It is shown, however, that the UV-sensitivity of the membrane-bound ATPase is also significantly influenced by the state of membrane lipids.
Toxicity of boric acid to Blattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) and analysis of residues in several organs
2001
1373-7503 (Print) Journal Article; Pestiferous cockroach species are associated closely with humans and are important from medical and public health points of view. Conventional insecticides have been used widely to control cockroaches which have developed resistance to these compounds. Thus, interest has again centered on lesser-used compounds such as boric acid. Boric acid has been used as an insecticide for many years, especially against cockroach. Its mode of action on insects has not been satisfactorily established. In Algeria, Blattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) is a serious pest in the urban environment and their infestation were controlled for many years by organophospha…
