Cytotoxic activity of some natural and synthetic guaianolides

Several natural guaianolides and synthetic derivatives of repin (1) were tested and found to be active against tumor cell replication. Repin (1) and both mono- and di-halohydrin analogues (2, 7-9, 11, 12) showed significant antitumor potency. A more effective compound (17) was obtained by esterificating repin with the paclitaxel side chain.
Capsaicin differentially modulates voltage-activated calcium channel currents in dorsal root ganglion neurones of rats

It is discussed whether capsaicin, an agonist of the pain mediating TRPV1 receptor, decreases or increases voltage-activated calcium channel (VACC) currents (ICa(V)). ICa(V) were isolated in cultured dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurones of rats using the whole cell patch clamp method and Ba 2+ as charge carrier. In large diameter neurones (>35Am), a concentration of 50AM was needed to reduce ICa(V) (activated by depolarizations to 0 mV) by 80%, while in small diameter neurones (30Am), the IC50 was 0.36 AM. Abstract Globalization and financial integration have increased in the last three decades giving rise to cumulated large external imbalances. The question we address in this paper is whether economic growth can be affected by these external imbalances. We estimate an augmented growth equation with the external stock position of the countries measured by the net foreign asset position. Although reactive oxygen species (ROS) at physiological concentrations are required for normal cell function, excessive production of ROS is detrimental to cells. Neuroglobin and cytoglobin are two globins, whose functions are still a matter of debate. A potential role in the detoxification of ROS is suggested. The influence of neuroglobin and cytoglobin on cell death after oxidative stress in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells was evaluated. Exposure of SH-SY5Y cells to paraquat or H(2)O(2) resulted in a concentration- and time-dependent induction of apoptotic and necrotic cell death.
