Modulation of the Biological Activity of a Tobacco LTP1 by Lipid Complexation

2004

Plant lipid transfer proteins (LTPs) are small, cysteine-rich proteins secreted into the extracellular space. They belong to the pathogenesis-related proteins (PR-14) family and are believed to be involved in several physiological processes including plant disease resistance, although their precise biological function is still unknown. Here, we show that a recombinant tobacco LTP1 is able to load fatty acids and jasmonic acid. This LTP1 binds to specific plasma membrane sites, previously characterized as elicitin receptors, and is shown to be involved in the activation of plant defense. The biological properties of this LTP1 were compared with those of LTP1-linolenic and LTP1-jasmonic acid…

Accentuating the Positive, Eliminating the Negative? Relationship Maintenance as a Predictor of Two-Dimensional Relationship Quality

2012

In this study, relationship maintenance and its connections with positive and negative relationship quality were examined among Finnish parents (N = 177 women and 153 men; i.e., partners from 150 couples and 27 women and 3 men whose partner did not participate in the study). Relationship maintenance was measured using Stafford, Dainton, and Haas's (2000) version of the RMSM and two-dimensional relationship quality using Fincham and Linfield's (1997) PANQIMS. Structural equation modeling was utilized to analyze paired data. Women were found to report more relationship maintenance behaviors than their partners. The results showed further that relationship maintenance was connected with both p…

l-Tyrosine β-naphthylamide is a potent competitive inhibitor of tyramine N-(hydroxycinnamoyl)transferase in vitro

2001

L-Tyrosine beta-naphthylamide, a synthetic substrate designed to measure tyrosine aminopeptidase activity, is a potent inhibitor of hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA:tyramine N-(hydroxycinnamoyl)transferase (THT) purified from elicited tobacco cell-suspension cultures. The inhibition is competitive, with the inhibitor binding reversibly to the tyramine binding site of the enzyme. Similar results were obtained with THT extracted from elicited potato cell-suspension cultures. Ki values were found to be 0.66 microM for the enzyme from tobacco and 0.3 microM for the enzyme from potato. L-Tyrosine 7-amido-4-methylcoumarin, a fluorogenic substrate for tyrosine aminopeptidases, the structure of which is close …

Crotonic acid as a bioactive factor in carrot seeds (Daucus carota L.)

2004

Water extracts from the carrot seed (Daucus carota L.) var. Perfekcja exhibit plant growth inhibitory properties against cress, cucumber, onion and carrot in a dose-dependant manner. This property results from the action of low-and high-molecular components of the extract. The low-molecular component was identified as crotonic acid ((E)-2-butenoic acid). Its presence was also confirmed in other late varieties of carrot. The determined strong herbicidal properties of crotonic acid and its availability after release to soil combined with its high level in seeds suggest that it might be considered as an allelopathic and autotoxic factor in the seeds.

Activation of the first component of complement, C1: comparison of the effect of sixteen different enzymes on serum C1.

1983

In this study, the effect of sixteen different enzymes on serum C1 and its subcomponents was investigated. The sixteen enzymes could be divided into three groups. First, enzymes which activate native C1: trypsin (optimal concentration 2.4 x 10(-4) mM); alpha-chymotrypsin (2.3 x 10(3) mM); thrombin (1.0 x 10(-5) mM); plasmin (1.9 x 10(-5) mM); elastase (5.8 x 10(-5) mM); pronase (3.0 x 10(-6) mM). All these enzymes are serine esterase and activate native serum C1 bound to EAC4 at the given concentration within 10 min at 30 degrees C. Furthermore, native C1 inhibited by a pentosanpolysulfoester, Sp54, is unable to undergo the internal activation but can be externally activated by the serine e…

Plate-tectonic processes at ca. 2.0 Ga: Evidence from >600 km of plate convergence

2019

Abstract We addressed when plate-tectonic processes first started on Earth by examining the ca. 2.0 Ga Limpopo orogenic belt in southern Africa. We show through palinspastic reconstruction that the Limpopo orogen originated from >600 km of west-directed thrusting, and the thrust sheet was subsequently folded by north-south compression. The common 2.7–2.6 Ga felsic plutons in the Limpopo thrust sheet and the absence of an arc immediately predating the 2.0 Ga Limpopo thrusting require the Limpopo belt to be an intracontinental structure. The similar duration (∼40 m.y.), slip magnitude (>600 km), slip rate (>15 mm/yr), tectonic setting (intracontinental), and widespread an…

A molecular approach to the taxonomy and biogeography of African parrots

2000

Random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis of blood samples from eight African parrot species was performed to study the genetic relationship within the genus Poicephalus and among Poi-cephalus and the two other main African parrot genuses, Agapornis and Psittacus. To this end, DNA from six Poicephalus species, one species, of the Agapornis group and the single Psittacus species was analysed. The amplification pattern was then converted into a binary matrix and scored by the unweighted pair-group method algorithm. The resulting dendrogram showed a neat separation of all the Poicephalus on one side, from Psittacus-Agapornis on the other side. Among the six analysed species of Poicephalus, two…

Schools: wrong spaces face the ones desired by the students

2017

Structural Approaches to Explain the Selectivity of COX-2 Inhibitors: Is There a Common Pharmacophore?

2000

The identification and characterisation of the isoenzyme cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) stimulated investigations to develop efficient non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs with reduced side effects compared to standard NSAIDs. This review will focus on the structural features needed to achieve COX-2 selectivity. Five structural classes can be identified together with a class bearing little or no resemblance to one another in their molecular structure. The most interesting point is the very distinct structure/activity relationship. On the one hand only minor modifications to a particular compound induce a drastic change in its COX selectivity and on the other hand the structural prerequisites in …

From Eunomia to Paideia: The Educating Nature of Law

2020

Education and Law are two of the institutions which most directly influence the configuration of the individual and of society. Furthermore, there is a close relationship between them in that each determines the development of the other. From their very beginnings, political and legal philosophy have asked what is Law, what is education and what should the relationship between them be. This chapter deals with the relationship between Law and education from this philosophical-practical perspective. It begins by illustrating the notable similarities between both and then goes on to address two questions: (1) whether Law should educate citizens in moral virtues; and (2) if the education of cit…
