Increased resistance to oxidation of betalain-enriched human low density lipoproteins

2003

Betalains are natural pigments recently considered as compounds with potential antioxidative properties. In this work, ex vivo plasma spiking of pure either betanin or indicaxanthin, followed by isolation of low density lipoprotein (LDL), and measurement of its resistance to copper-induced oxidation, has been used to research if these betalains can bind to LDL and prevent oxidation of LDL lipids. When pooled human plasma from 10 healthy volunteers was incubated in the presence of 25-100 microM either betanin or indicaxanthin, incorporation of both compounds in LDL was observed, with a maximum binding of 0.52 +/- 0.08, and 0.51 +/- 0.06 nmoles of indicaxanthin and betanin, respectively, per …

Sub-lethal effects of deltamethrin on walking behaviour and response to host kairomone of the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis.

2002

The lethal doses of the pyrethroid deltamethrin were estimated for the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), and the sub-lethal effects of an LD25 on female walking behaviour were evaluated. Linear speed of treated parasitoids was reduced compared with that of untreated ones for a period of up to 24 h. The sub-lethal effects of deltamethrin on parasitoid response to patches contaminated by a contact kairomone from its host, Nezara viridula L (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), was also evaluated. Both treated and untreated parasitoids responded to host-contaminated patches by increasing residence time and decreasing linear speed. However, treated females showed …

Teacher Stress over a School Year

1986

Abstract: Makinen, R. & Kinnunen, U. 1986. Teacher Stress over a School Year. Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research 30, 55‐70. The accumulation of and recovery from stress among teachers was studied longitudinally over a period of 14 months. Variables related to psychological state and health together with hours of work, free time and night time rest, and the quality of interpersonal relations were measured repeatedly (17 times) in a group of 187 teachers. The results indicate accumulation of stress during the autumn term with the result that weekend recovery disappears in November‐December. The Christmas, mid‐winter and Easter holidays seem to prevent stress accumulation during the …

Time trends of technology mediated communication with friends among bullied and not bullied children in four Nordic countries between 2001 and 2010

2016

Background Friends are important in childhood and adolescence, especially to bullied children. Technology mediated communication (TMC) could be used both to develop and maintain friendship. The present study examined (1) trends in the use of TMC with friends between 2001 and 2010; (2) possible differences between bullied and not bullied children and (3) differences between children with few close friends and children with several close friends. Methods Data were obtained from three waves of the serial cross-sectional Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children survey conducted in Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden during 2001/2002, 2005/2006 and 2009/2010. The total sample consisted of 65 95…

Topiramate and Metabolic Acidosis in Infants and Toddlers

2002

Summary:  Purpose: Topiramate (TPM) inhibits carbonic anhydrase, with metabolic acidosis as a possible side effect, although this has been reported in only two adult cases. We investigated the acid–base metabolism in infants and toddlers treated with TPM. Methods: Nine infants and toddlers aged 5 months to 2.3 years (median, 6 months) were treated with TPM at maximal doses of 8.2–26 mg/kg/day (median, 11 mg/kg/day). The maximal TPM dose was achieved after 8–35 days (median, 17 days). TPM was given in addition to other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in five cases and as a sole AED in four patients with refractory epilepsy resistant to multiple AEDs. The diagnoses were infantile spasms (n = 5), e…

Randomized trial of a single, double and triple dose of 10 mg/kg of a human formulation of triclabendazole in patients with fascioliasis.

2004

1. A study performed > 10 years ago and case reports published recently suggest that triclabendazole is effective for the treatment of patients with fascioliasis. 2. To confirm the efficacy of a human formulation of triclabendazole, we enrolled 165 patients into the present study and divided the subjects into two groups: (i) those who had fascioliasis, as evidenced by the presence of ova in their stools; and (ii) patients with clinical and laboratory data suggesting fascioliasis. 3. Patients were randomly allocated to receive 10 mg/kg, p.o., triclabendazole for 1, 2 or 3 days (single-, double- and triple-dose groups, respectively). Medical history and physical and laboratory examinations we…

Elucidating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor antagonism from a chemical-structural perspective.

2020

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) plays an important role in several biological processes such as reproduction, immunity and homoeostasis. However, little is known on the chemical-structural and physicochemical features that influence the activity of AhR antagonistic modulators. In the present report, in vitro AhR antagonistic activity evaluations, based on a chemical-activated luciferase gene expression (AhR-CALUX) bioassay, and an extensive literature review were performed with the aim of constructing a structurally diverse database of contaminants and potentially toxic chemicals. Subsequently, QSAR models based on Linear Discriminant Analysis and Logistic Regression, as well as two tox…

Parole chiave: poesia, traduzione, Umberto Saba, Tomàs Garcés   Abstract: The personal relationship between Umberto Saba and Tomàs Garcés began in the early  thirties and stopped just before the Spanish Civil War. This article analyses and edits for  the first time all the letters written by Saba to the Catalan poet that have been preserved  in the archives of f…

Traffic fundamentals for A22 Brenner freeway by microsimulation models.

The effect of buyer specific-monitoring procedures on buyer control in dynamic supply chain links

2015

Based on transaction cost analysis (TCA), resource dependency theory (RDT), and supply chain management literature, this study explores the effect of buyer-specific monitoring procedures on buyer control in industrial buyer-seller transactions, particularly in relation to how environmental uncertainty affects the buying firm's ability to exercise control over the supplier firm. The research design is based on primary data from a survey of 168 industrial buyer-seller relationships which map a broad set of dimensions of the economic transactions and structures in these business-to-business relationships. The empirical findings provide support for the hypotheses, and demonstrate that the effec…
