Eugenesia y autoría moral. Lectura de una tesis habermasiana
2017
A Diffusive Strategic Dynamics for Social Systems
2010
We propose a model for the dynamics of a social system, which includes diffusive effects and a biased rule for spin-flips, reproducing the effect of strategic choices. This model is able to mimic some phenomena taking place during marketing or political campaigns. Using a cost function based on the Ising model defined on the typical quenched interaction environments for social systems (Erdos-Renyi graph, small-world and scale-free networks), we find, by numerical simulations, that a stable stationary state is reached, and we compare the final state to the one obtained with standard dynamics, by means of total magnetization and magnetic susceptibility. Our results show that the diffusive str…
Proton polarizabilities: status, relevance, prospects
2013
This is a brief review of the status of understanding the proton polarizabilities in chiral perturbation theory and of their relevance to the `proton charge radius puzzle'.
Extensions, expansions, Lie algebra cohomology and enlarged superspaces
2004
After briefly reviewing the methods that allow us to derive consistently new Lie (super)algebras from given ones, we consider enlarged superspaces and superalgebras, their relevance and some possible applications.
Planck-scale physics: facts and beliefs
2006
The relevance of the Planck scale to a theory of quantum gravity has become a worryingly little examined assumption that goes unchallenged in the majority of research in this area. However, in all scientific honesty, the significance of Planck's natural units in a future physical theory of spacetime is only a plausible, yet by no means certain, assumption. The purpose of this article is to clearly separate fact from belief in this connection.
Re-weighting at the LHC: the p–Pb data impact
2016
Abstract In this work we present selected results of a comprehensive analysis of the medium modifications in proton-lead LHC Run I data, and discuss the implications on different sets of nuclear parton densities. We find that the nuclear environment has a non-negligible relevance on the experimental results. We incorporate the information from Run I into the current nuclear densities and provide novel sets of nPDFs that will be useful for future predictions.
Neutrino propagation in magnetized media
1999
Abstract After a short presentation of the general techniques used to determine neutrino potentials in a magnetized medium I will discuss some applications to MSW resonant oscillations. I will also consider the relevance of our results for the pulsar velocity problem.
Conclusion: Transfer of the Rhetoric of Procedure to British Debating Societies
2016
In the concluding chapter, Haapala demonstrates why nineteenth-century British rhetoric should be appreciated more than previous studies suggest. While highlighting the political relevance of the British debating societies, the chapter illuminates the crucial role of the transfer of the rhetoric of procedure from the House of Commons to the Union Societies. Instead of focusing on the role of speech-making in British political culture, it puts forward an interpretation of the Unions as forerunners in the adoption of parliamentary procedure.
Introduction: The Rhetoric of Parliamentary Debate
2016
Haapala introduces a rhetorical approach to studying parliamentary debate. Focusing on the debating practices of the Oxford and Cambridge Unions, the chapter suggests that an extraordinary relationship was formed between debate and parliamentary procedure in the Unions and the mid nineteenth-century House of Commons. As well as drawing attention to the relevance of procedure and rules of debate in the history of the British Parliament, Haapala discusses approaches previously used to make sense of parliamentary discourse and debate. The chapter also illustrates the adoption of parliamentary procedure in the Unions and highlights them as an important historical source for understanding politi…
