Responsabilità degli intermediari di Internet e nuovi obblighi di conformazione: robo-takedown, policy of termination, notice and take steps

2017

Internet service provider liability and new duties: robo-takedown, policy of termination, notice and take steps The essay — after clarifying the outlines of the two main “safe harbor” provisions which limit the liability of online service providers as regards copyright infringement in the Western Legal Tradition, namely the U.S. section 512 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and articles 12 through 15 of the EU Directive on e-commerce — enquires the way in which the most recent case-law, respectively that of the U.S. Federal Courts and of the European Court of Justice, is enhancing the standard of protection and the enforcement of intellectual property rights. Indeed, both the Digital …

Novel yeast extract is superior to colloidal oatmeal in providing rapid itch relief

2020

Background Approximately, 13.5% of the population suffers from chronic itch. Many cosmetic and pharmaceutical treatments for itch are available; however, cosmetic treatments are not reliably effective and most pharmaceutical formulations carry the risk of adverse events with chronic use. Aims Previously, we have reported a novel extraction process of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, that is, Baker's yeast. The extract obtained from the novel process demonstrates superior anti-itch properties compared to other yeast extracts. In our previous study, we demonstrated that, after 30 minutes, the extract significantly reduced itch when compared to a placebo lotion (P = .002). Methods In the present stud…

Are calanco landforms similar to river basins?

2017

In the past badlands have been often considered as ideal field laboratories for studying landscape evolution because of their geometrical similarity to larger fluvial systems. For a given hydrological process, no scientific proof exists that badlands can be considered a model of river basin prototypes. In this paper the measurements carried out on 45 Sicilian calanchi, a type of badlands that appears as a small-scale hydrographic unit, are used to establish their morphological similarity with river systems whose data are available in the literature. At first the geomorphological similarity is studied by identifying the dimensionless groups, which can assume the same value or a scaled one in…

Distributed and proximity-constrained C-means for discrete coverage control

2018

In this paper we present a novel distributed coverage control framework for a network of mobile agents, in charge of covering a finite set of points of interest (PoI), such as people in danger, geographically dispersed equipment or environmental landmarks. The proposed algorithm is inspired by C-Means, an unsupervised learning algorithm originally proposed for non-exclusive clustering and for identification of cluster centroids from a set of observations. To cope with the agents' limited sensing range and avoid infeasible coverage solutions, traditional C-Means needs to be enhanced with proximity constraints, ensuring that each agent takes into account only neighboring PoIs. The proposed co…

Botulinum Toxin Injection Plus Topical Diltiazem for Chronic Anal Fissure: A Randomized Double-Blind Clinical Trial and Long-term Outcome.

2021

BACKGROUND: Chemical sphincterotomy avoids the risk of permanent incontinence in the treatment of chronic anal fissure, but it does not reach the efficacy of surgery and recurrence is high. Drug combination has been proposed to overcome these drawbacks.; OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the clinical, morphological, and functional effects of combined therapy with botulinum toxin injection and topical diltiazem in chronic anal fissure and to assess the long-term outcome after healing.; DESIGN: This is a randomized, controlled, double-blind, 2-arm, parallel-group trial with a long-term follow-up.; SETTINGS: This study was conducted at a tertiary care center.; PATIENTS: A total of 70 cons…

Early symptomatic benefit indicates long-term prognosis after transcatheter mitral valve edge-to-edge repair in functional and degenerative etiology

2021

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is common in patients with heart failure and constitutes an independent risk factor for adverse prognosis besides NYHA-class. The predictive value of dyspnea reduction after transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVr) on outcome has not been investigated up to now.We enrolled 627 consecutive patients (47.0% female, 57.4% functional MR; median follow-up 486 days[IQR 157/961]; survival status available in 96.8%; symptoms assessed in n = 556 at baseline / n = 406 at 1 month) treated with isolated percutaneous mitral valve edge-to-edge repair in our center from 06/2010-03/2018 (exclusion of combined forms of TMVr) in a monocentric retrospective analysis. Survival was 97.6…

158 Timing of Fascia Iliaca Compartment Block (FICB) for Neck of Femur (NOF) fracture in the Accident and Emergency Department (AED) and the operatin…

2021

Background and Aims FICB is recommended for NOF fracture in the AED to improve analgesia1 and as an adjuvant to anaesthesia during surgery2. Surgical repair of the fracture should be performed on the day of, or the day after, admission3. We evaluated the provision of FICB in AED and its potential to cause local anaesthetic (LA) toxicity when followed by a further block at time of surgery. Methods All patients admitted to our institution with NOF fracture during October 2019 were retrospectively screened for FICBs. We recorded the time of: admission, FICB in AED, surgery, FICB in theatre and LA dose. Data was cross-referenced and validated against National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) tables…

Brancati su Pirandello e il pirandellismo

2019

In the short novel "Sogno di un valzer" published on "Quadrivio" from 5 June to 14 August 1938 Vitaliano Brancati enacts between observation of places and survey of customs a world beyond measure constantly hovering between reality and dream. In Caltanissetta (Nissa) the city in which the writer is the magistral institute turned his back on fascist Rome he came to teach unobtrusive insignificant characters who nevertheless covet desires racking their brains in metaphysical questions. Thus the leitmotiv of the critics of pirandellism takes shape which often with subtle irony emerges in the Brancatian writings. The essay shows how it intertwines with the sulphurous comedy of the writer of Don Giovanni in Sicilia who tracing a particular topography of the island supported by inner relief leads his analysis of eccentric behaviors and of the aberrations of the mind in which the trivialized Pirandellian thought ends to become an explosive element.
