Data from: Cuticular hydrocarbons as potential mediators of cryptic species divergence in a mutualistic ant association

2019

Upon advances in sequencing techniques, more and more morphologically identical organisms are identified as cryptic species. Often, mutualistic interactions are proposed as drivers of diversification. Species of the Neotropical parabiotic ant association between Crematogaster levior and Camponotus femoratus are known for highly diverse cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profiles, which in insects serve as desiccation barrier but also as communication cues. In the present study we investigated the association of the ants’ CHC profiles to genotypes and morphological traits, and discovered cryptic species pairs in both genera. To assess putative niche differentiation between the cryptic species, we c…

Parasitic, commensalistic, and mutualistic guests in social insect colonies often circumvent their hosts’ nestmate recognition system to be accepted. These tolerance strategies include chemical mimicry and chemical insignificance. While tolerance strategies have been studied intensively in social parasites, little is known about these mechanisms in non-parasitic interactions. Here, we describe a strategy used in a parabiotic association, i.e. two mutualistic ant species that regularly share a common nest although they have overlapping food niches. One of them, Crematogaster modiglianii, produces an array of cuticular compounds which represent a substance class undescribed in nature so far. …

Cyber-Activism Against Sexual Violence: #BringBackOurGirls

2020

2005

The thesis of the supposed clash of the Islamic and the western civilizations is, by far, the most diffused and debated of all the subjects and proposals dealt Huntington in his book <i>The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order</i>, above all after the terrorist attacks of the September 11th. The results of the World Social Survey 2000-2001 directed by Inglehart, are used in the present article to test the thesis of the cultural differences in a wide sample of Western Christian and Islamic societies. The comparative analysis undertaken allows to conclude that the cultural differences between both group societies are quite important, althou…

Particulated wisdom teeth as an autologous bone substitute for grafting/filling material in bone defects : case Report

2020

Introduction Bone augmentation material using permanent teeth are confirmed in many articles to provide good histological and clinical results. Advances in osteoconduction and osteoinduction, low cost of material, no risk of disease transmission and elimination of foreign body reaction are important aspects not only to the clinician but to patient as well. Many techniques and devices to obtain graft material for bone augmentation out of teeth are found in the literature. Material and Methods The wisdom teeth crush technique developed in our office and described in this case report is simple and no specific devices for teeth grinding were used. The graft material was obtained from impacted i…

Compromised repair of radiation-induced DNA double-strand breaks in Fanconi anemia fibroblasts in G2

2020

Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare chromosomal instability syndrome with various clinical features and high cancer incidence. Despite being a DNA repair disorder syndrome and a frequently observed clinical hypersensitivity of FA patients towards ionizing radiation, the experimental evidence regarding the efficiency of radiation-induced DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair in FA is very controversial. Here, we performed a thorough analysis of the repair of radiation-induced DSBs in G1 and G2 in FA fibroblasts of complementation groups A, C, D1 (BRCA2), D2, E, F, G and P (SLX4) in comparison to normal human lung and skin fibroblasts. γH2AX, 53BP1, or RPA foci quantification after X-irradiation was…

Are Sick Individuals Weak Competitors? Competitive Ability of Snails Parasitized by a Gigantism-Inducing Trematode

2013

Parasitized individuals are often expected to be poor competitors because they are weakened by infections. Many trematode species, however, although extensively exploiting their mollusc hosts, also induce gigantism (increased host size) by diverting host resources towards growth instead of reproduction. In such systems, alternatively to reduced competitive ability due to negative effects of parasitism on host performance, larger size could allow more efficient resource acquisition and thus increase the relative competitive ability of host individuals. We addressed this hypothesis by testing the effect of a trematode parasite Diplostomum pseudospathaceum on the competitive ability of its sna…

Compliance to therapy with Dapoxetine in comparison to a conventional selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (Citalopram) in 118 patients with premat…

2013

Premature Ejaculation (PE) is a sexual dysfunction that concern 20-30% of the male population. Dapoxetine is a new serotonine re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI)specific for PE treatment.Aim of the study is to assess compliance and effectiveness of the treatment with dapoxetine compared to the treatment with citalopram (a classic SSRI used to treat PE).
