Sexual dysfunction in dialytic patients. A prospective cross-sectional observational study in two hemodialysis centers

2020

Objectives: Incidence and prevalence of patients in dialytic therapy increased considerably in recent years. The onset of new issues, once overshadowed, linked to a lower quality of life like sexual dysfunction became increasingly common. The first study in this area, dating back to the 1970s, shows the high prevalence of sexual dysfunction among patients in dialytic therapy of both sexes. Later studies proved an association of sexual dysfunction with psyche disorders, anxiety, depression and lack of self-confidence. The aim of this study is to describe the incidence of male and female sexual main dysfunctions, the latter not least in literature, in patients in hemodialytic therapy. With th…

A giant fetal urinoma in a neonate without detectable obstructive uropathy

2003

UNLABELLED Fetal urinoma is an uncommon finding in prenatal investigations. Most previous reports have, almost in every case, referred to the presence of an obstructive uropathy and thus to very high pressure in the upper urinary tract during fetal life. In this paper we present a prenatally detected fetal giant urinoma occurring in the absence of an apparent obstructive uropathy but associated with an ipsilateral vesico-ureteral reflux. CASE REPORT A 5-day-old boy, born after a caesarean section in the 37th week of gestation, but without any perinatal distress, came under our observation because of the evidence of a right upper quadrant abdominal mass. This mass had already been detected p…

Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda): differential in vivo cytokine responses in high and low compatible hosts.

2011

In order to investigate the factors determining the expulsion of intestinal trematodes, we have analyzed the in vivo cytokine responses at several levels and the local responses against Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda) in two host species displaying different compatibility with the parasite. The response of the high compatible host (mice) is characterized by a mixed Th1/Th2 phenotype in the spleen, Peyer's patches and mesenteric lymph nodes. At the intestine, a marked Th1 response with a marked increase of IFN-γ together with elevated number of mucosal neutrophils and expression of induced nitric oxide synthase were observed. The responses in the host of low compatibility (rats) with the par…

Genome-Wide Expression Profiles in Very Low Birth Weight Infants With Neonatal Sepsis

2014

BACKGROUND: Bacterial sepsis is associated with high morbidity and mortality in preterm infants. However, diagnosis of sepsis and identification of the causative agent remains challenging. Our aim was to determine genome-wide expression profiles of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants with and without bacterial sepsis and assess differences. METHODS: This was a prospective observational double-cohort study conducted in VLBW (<1500 g) infants with culture-positive bacterial sepsis and non-septic matched controls. Blood samples were collected as soon as clinical signs of sepsis were identified and before antibiotics were initiated. Total RNA was processed for genome-wide expression an…

Closed-Loop Automatic Oxygen Control (CLAC) in Preterm Infants: A Randomized Controlled Trial

2014

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In preterm infants receiving supplemental oxygen, routine manual control (RMC) of the fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO2) is often difficult and time consuming. We developed a system for closed-loop automatic control (CLAC) of the FIO2 and demonstrated its short-term safety and efficacy in a single-center study. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that this system is more effective than RMC alone in maintaining arterial oxygen saturation within target levels when evaluated over 24 hours under routine conditions and with different target levels. METHODS: We performed a multicenter, randomized controlled, crossover clinical trial in 34 preterm infa…

Echinostoma caproni: Differential tegumental responses to growth in compatible and less compatible hosts

2010

Abstract The topography of the tegument of Echinostoma caproni adults collected from high (mice) and low (rats) compatible hosts was compared by SEM. In the oral (OS) and the ventral sucker (VS) areas, a worm age–host species interaction was found with regard to the density of spines. There was a decrease in the density of spines in the adults collected from mice, whereas an increase occurred in the OS area in worms from rats over time. The tegumentary spines in adults from mice became larger and blunter. Some spines from the VS area in adults from mice at 4 wpi were multipointed. The spines of adults from rats were sharper, not covered by the tegument and no multipointed spines were observ…

Effects of aging in salt spray conditions on flax and flax/basalt reinforced composites: Wettability and dynamic mechanical properties

2016

Abstract In the last years, the industrial policies are more attentive to issues concerning sustainability, recycling and environmental care. Therefore, the use of natural fibres in composite materials has spread more and more. This paper deals with flax and basalt fibres within an epoxy matrix by investigating the wettability and the dynamic mechanical properties of the resulting composites, subjected to long-term aging tests in critical environmental conditions. The first laminate was constituted by stacking ten layers of bidirectional flax fabrics. The second one was produced by replacing two external flax layers with two layers of basalt mat, for each side of the laminate. Both laminate…

2015

Cobalt ferrite powders are synthesized by the co-precipitation technology, combined with the hydrothermal synthesis method and crystallite size, specific surface area (SSA), magnetic properties of synthesized products are obtained. All the synthesized ferrites are nanocrystalline single phase materials with crystallite size of 10-16 nm the SSA of 60±5 m2/g and the calculated particle size of 20±2 nm. Synthesized Co ferrites are characterized by the saturation magnetization MS of 59-60 emu/g, remanent magnetization Mr of 23 emu/g and coercivity Hc of 570-650 Oe.

Acoustic Emission-Based Condition Monitoring and Remaining Useful Life Prediction of Hydraulic Cylinder Rod Seals

2021

The foremost reason for unscheduled maintenance of hydraulic cylinders in industry is caused by wear of the hydraulic seals. Therefore, condition monitoring and subsequent estimation of remaining useful life (RUL) methods are highly sought after by the maintenance professionals. This study aimed at investigating the use of acoustic emission (AE) sensors to identify the early stages of external leakage initiation in hydraulic cylinders through run to failure studies (RTF) in a test rig. In this study, the impact of sensor location and rod speeds on the AE signal were investigated using both time- and frequency-based features. Furthermore, a frequency domain analysis was conducted to investig…

Dielectric and magnetic properties of CdMoO4:Gd3+ single crystal

2014

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy and magnetic measurements provide experimental evidence that the CdMoO4:Gd 3+ single crystal is the paramagnet with low relative dielectric permittivity (er 8), which slightly depends on the temperature and frequencies. Magnetization with zero coercivity and remanence is almost a universal function of l0H/T, characterizing superparamagnetic-like behavior. These results are being considered in a framework of the random distribution of the Ga 3+ ions in the tetragonal structure.
