Biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal in membrane bioreactors: model development and parameter estimation

2012

Membrane bioreactors (MBR) are being increasingly used for wastewater treatment. Mathematical modeling of MBR systems plays a key role in order to better explain their characteristics. Several MBR models have been presented in the literature focusing on different aspects: biological models, models which include soluble microbial products (SMP), physical models able to describe the membrane fouling and integrated models which couple the SMP models with the physical models. However, only a few integrated models have been developed which take into account the relationships between membrane fouling and biological processes. With respect to biological phosphorus removal in MBR systems, due to th…

Interfacial role of Cesium in Prussian Blue Films

2015

The simultaneous measurement of current, mass, motional resistance and absorbance magnitudes allows the electrochemical cation insertion process to be explained during successive voltammograms around the Prussian Blue ⇄ Everitt's Salt system in CsCl aqueous acid solutions. Two different ways for the entrance of cesium to the porous structure of Prussian Blue have been observed. Firstly, Cs+ is spontaneously absorbed as CsCl into the interstitial cluster of water of the channels formed by the Fe(II)low spinCNFe(III)high spin structural units of the crystal. This chemical absorption involves a spontaneous substitution of inner water molecules of the interstitial water cluster. Finally, Cs+ …

Determination of sugars in depilatory formulations: a green analytical method employing infrared detection and partial least squares regression.

2011

A green analytical method was developed for the analysis of sugar-based depilatories. Three independent partial least squares (PLS) regression models were built for the direct determination of glucose, fructose and maltose without any sample pretreatment based on their attenuated total reflectance - Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra. The models showed adequate prediction capabilities with root-mean-square-errors of prediction ranging from 7.04 to 12.55 mg sugar g(-1) sample. As a reference procedure, gradient liquid chromatography with on-line infrared detection, employing background correction based on cubic smoothing splines, was used. The analysis revealed changes in the suga…

Surgical management of acute angle-closure glaucoma after toric implantable contact lens implantation

2006

A case of pupillary block after implantation of an implantable contact lens (ICL) is reported, and surgical management and prevention are discussed. In a myopic patient, the best corrected visual acuity in the right eye was 20/50 with -15.50 -3.00 x 175. After uneventful implantation of an ICL, painful acute glaucoma developed with an intraocular pressure beyond measurable values. Apparent anterior vaulting of the ICL suggested a sizing problem. In a situation of a mid-wide dilated pupil, immediate explantation of the ICL was performed. Then, using a preoperative iris photography as guidance, an anterior chamber iris-claw toric phakic intraocular lens was implanted. On postoperative examina…

A root cause analysis method for preventing erratic behavior in software development: PEBA

2019

Measures taken to prevent faults from being introduced or going undetected can secure development of highly reliable software systems. One such measure is analyzing root causes of recurring faults and preventing them from appearing again. Previous methods developed for this purpose have been reactive in nature and relied heavily on fault reporting mechanisms of ogranizations. Additionally, previous efforts lack a defined mechanism for innovating corrective actions. In this study, we strive to complement the existing methods by introducing a proactive and qualitative method that does not rely on fault data. During the course of the research, in addition to an extensive literature search, an …

Autochthonous microalgae grown in municipal wastewaters as a tool for effectively removing nitrogen and phosphorous

2020

Abstract Microalgae have promising applications in wastewater treatment because of their ability to use inorganic compounds such as nitrates and phosphates as nutrients for their growth. Microalgae are applied to the secondary and tertiary bio-treatment with two benefits: i) pollutants removal from wastewater; ii) production of microalgal biomass, that can be exploited as a source of biomass and biomolecules. In the present work, four different microalgal strains (two from culture collections and two isolated from Sicilian littoral) were tested in municipal sewage bioremediation. The sewage of a municipal plant, already processed with primary treatment, was used for the cultivation of micro…

CADMIUM AND COPPER SORPTION ON PECTIN ENCAPSULATED IN CALCIUM ALGINATE BEADS

2008

Pectin is an acidic polysaccharide constituted by monomer units of galacturonic acid. It is a main component of peel fruits where is present as protopectin. Due to the presence of a high number of carboxylic binding sites in its structure, pectin (Pect) shows a good sequestering capacity towards metal ions. Pectin has been proposed as a sorbent to remove metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this work the ability of pectin on solid phase to remove Cd(II) and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions has been evaluated. To this end, a powder of a commercial pectin, (esterified potassium salt from Citrus fruit) was encapsulated in a polymeric matrix of calcium alginate (CA) at different ratios of pectin …
