Long-term results of the use of silicone sheets after diskectomy in the temporomandibular joint: clinical, radiographic and histopathologic findings

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term results of a group of patients who had the disk of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) removed and permanently replaced by a silicone sheet. The study group comprised 48 patients, treated in the period from 1983 to 1993. In eight patients, the implants had to be removed after an average interval of 5.6 years and they were submitted for histopathological examination. Twenty-five of the 40 patients with silastic implants in place, and five of the 8 patients who had their implants removed, were available for long-term follow-up (mean interval of 7.0 years, SD 2.8 years). Against the background of the current discussion about Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP, Seyne-sur-mer, France) breast implants, we want to present a case demonstrating the complications such as implant rupture, silicone dissemination and level III silicone lymphadenopathy. A 29-year-old woman with cosmetic breast augmentation with PIP implants 5 years previously showed a sensitive swelling in her right axilla and neck region. AbstractDoppler sonography for intraoperative localization of the intrarenal arteries combined with B-scan sonography for intraoperative visualization of stones allows complete stone removal via small radial nephrotomies for which clamping of the renal artery is no longer necessary. Since September 1980 we used this technique on 35 patients with staghorn or recurrent calculi. The main advantages of this technique are exact and quick stone localization, minimal loss of renal function owing to preservation of the intrarenal vascular system, and no need for renal ischemia and cooling.

Treatment by low density lipoprotein (LDL) apheresis using dextran sulfate columns (DSC) leads to hemostasis alterations with prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) of more than 120 seconds. Abstract Study design 118 patients, who were admitted from 2005 to 2008 to our department due to complications following mesh implantation, were included in a retrospective survey. We investigated patient symptoms, findings and subsequent patient management. There was a re-evaluation of symptoms in a follow-up eight weeks after the revision procedure. Data from our urogynecological file archive were used. Results The main complaints were de novo urgency, pain and recurrent urinary tract infections. Internal Fixation in Postpartum Symphysis Pubis Rupture: Report of Three Cases

We present three patients with postpartum symphysis pubis rupture whose severe complaints persisted after conservative treatment. All three ruptures were stabilized with open reduction and internal fixation. There were no postoperative problems, and implants were removed after a mean period of six months. Patients were free of complaints after implant removal. In select cases, operative treatment of postpartum symphysiolysis may be indicated.
