Growth of pikeperch in relation to lake characteristics: total phosphorus, water colour, lake area and depth

The growth of pikeperch Sander lucioperca was studied in 41 lakes in central Finland. The backcalculated average total length of 3 year-old pikeperch was used as an indicator of growth. The growth correlated positively with total phosphorus and water colour and negatively with lake area and depth. The reason for differences in growth may be differences in the amount of suitable food, foraging success or temperature dynamics in different lakes.

Abstract Tagged 2-year-old trout smolts, Salmo trutta , were stocked into River Isojoki in 1996, 1997 and 1998 (a sea trout strain), and Lake Konnevesi in 1997 and 1998 (a brown trout strain) in April, May or June–July. Stocking dates were determined in respect to the migration activity of 100 PIT-tagged fish held in the laboratory. Migration activity was relatively similar in both trout forms each year. In April, movement activity was low; in May, movement activity of the PIT-tagged fish increased and in June–July, movement had ceased. A pilot experiment of stock enhancement based on the release of hatchery-reared juveniles of dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus, was carried out at two artificial reefs located 0.9 km offshore the south-western Sicilian coast (Central Mediterranean). The fish assemblages inhabiting the reefs were characterized using underwater visual census (UVC) surveys. Despite some differences in fish species richness, diversity and abundance, both artificial reefs provide suitable feeding resources and shelter opportunities for the settlement of dusky grouper juveniles. La historiografía sobre los moriscos y su expulsión ha estado determinada por todo un conjunto de prejuicios ideológicos. Los contemporáneos de la expulsión, al menos los que tuvieron ocasión de expresarse por escrito, adoptaron una posición que podemos llamar moriscófoba. Consideraban que la población morisca valenciana era económicamente poco relevante, dado el carácter minifundista y atrasado de la agricultura que practicaban. Al mismo tiempo pensaban que su población crecía a un ritmo mayor que la cristiana, debido al matrimonio universal y precoz que practicaban, ya que las que llamaban «cargas del matrimonio» eran para ellos poco exigentes y no practicaban el celibato.
