A 65-year-old man was referred for evaluation of acute onset of fever, productive cough and dyspnoea. He had previously received a diagnosis of laryngeal carcinoma, which had been treated with laryngectomy and bilateral laterocervical lymphadenectomy, followed by chemotherapy. This preliminary study aimed to investigate the effects of a six-week low-frequency electromyostimulation training (10Hz) on the cardiovascular, respiratory and muscular systems. To that purpose, aerobic capacity, knee extensor muscles strength and architecture, muscle sympathetic nervous activity, blood pressure and heart rate have been evaluated in one healthy male subject (33 year-old, 1.73 m, 73 kg). Results showed improvement of aerobic capacity (+4.5% and +11.5% for maximal oxygen uptake and ventilatory threshold) and muscle strength (+11% and +16% for voluntary and evoked force). In the last decade, companies have started to disclose information on carbon emissions. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to look into this phenomenon in South America, which is a very important geographical area regarding climate change because of the local nature and developing economies. This paper explores the relationships between some corporate variables and two important decisions: (i) whether to report carbon emissions, and (ii) the impact on the evolution of carbon emissions. Which Factors Modulate Letter Position Coding in Pre-literate Children?

One of the central landmarks of learning to read is the emergence of orthographic processing (i.e., the encoding of letter identity and letter order): it constitutes the necessary link between the low-level stages of visual processing and the higher-level processing of words. The Omission of Accent Marks Does Not Hinder Word Recognition: Evidence From Spanish

Recent research has found that the omission of accent marks in Spanish does not produce slower word identification times in go/no-go lexical decision and semantic categorization tasks [e.g., cárcel (prison) = carcel], thus suggesting that vowels like á and a are represented by the same orthographic units during word recognition and reading. Locked-in Syndrome and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography: Observations from a Case of Basilar Artery Thrombosis

We report the case of a 59-year-old male patient suffering from locked-in syndrome (LIS) following basilar artery thrombosis despite an attempt of thrombolysis. Neurological examination showed quadriplegia and aphonia and a state of coma requiring mechanical ventilation was diagnosed. The use of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) allowed to detect a normal 18F-FDG uptake in the main cerebral cortical areas and a significant reduction of 18F-FDG uptake in both cerebellar hemispheres, compatible with a functional deafferentation, helping confirming the clinical suspicion of LIS. During the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio in 1992 educators of every subject were asked to contribute to public awareness and understanding of the problems and challenges related to our planet’s future, in order to make possible citizens’ participation in well grounded decision-making. The purpose of our contribution is to analyse what science teachers’ perceptions are, because without correct teacher perception of the planetary crisis and its possible solutions, we can’t expect their effective implication in this dimension of education.
