Influence of Training Load on Mood Disturbance at Sea Level and 3900 m Altitude: A Case Study of a Wheelchair Athlete
2018
The purpose of this case study was to investigate the influence of a training load (TL), oxygen saturation (SO2) and blood pressure (BP) on mood states in a wheelchair marathoner during (7 weeks at sea level (SL), 5 weeks at 3860 m altitude, 1 week returning to SL). TL was obtained with Foster’s equation while mood states were obtained with the Profile of Mood States Questionnaire (POMS). Furthermore, SO2 and BP were assessed upon wakening. SO2 (%) decreased at altitude, compared to SL (88.31 ± 2.46 vs. 98.52 ± 0.11) and increased until the last week at altitude (92.64 ± 1.12). Systolic pressure (SP) increased at altitude compared to pre-altitude (126.0 ± 5…
Using Wavelet Techniques to Approximate the Subjacent Risk of Death
2018
In Actuarial science, graduation techniques have been used extensively: the large number of scientific papers and technical documentation published evidences this fact (see Ayuso M et al. (Estadistica Actuarial Vida. UBe, Barcelona (2007)), Baeza Sampere and Morillas Jurado (Rev. Anales del Instituto de Actuarios Espanoles 135–164 (2011)), London (Graduation: The Revision of Estimates. ACTEX Publications, Connecticut (1985)), Cairns, et al. (Scand Actuar J 2(3):79–113 (2008)) and the references therein). Graduation techniques are defined by Haberman and Renshaw J Inst Actuar 110:135–156 (1983) as a set of principles and techniques for use that are used on raw data so that a more appropriate…
The Effects of IFRS Adoption on the Unconditional Conservatism of Spanish Listed Companies
2017
This paper analyses the effects on unconditional conservatism of the mandatory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) by Spanish listed companies in January 2005. The lack of robustness in the previous evidence justifies analysing this issue from different perspectives. To this end, we use, for the first time in this context, Ahmed and Duellman’s methodology (J. Account. Econ., 2007). In its design, these authors consider the impact of growth options and other future incomes, controlling for the idiosyncratic factors that the literature has found to condition this type of conservatism. Additionally, beyond the pooled regression techniques usually used, we use econome…
Socioemotional characteristics of minors in foster care: A comparison between the estimation of parents, teachers and children
2013
Abstract During the child's first few years, it's of fundamental importance the presence of a strong emotional base as long as it creates the possibility to open themselves to physical and social world with confidence, and as it acts as a facilitator of cognitive development. For this reason, if the family cannot ensure such base, social services are forced to resort to foster care, a resource that has a lot of difficulties, leading to different implications in the development of the child and of the foster family. It is therefore important to analyze in depth the socio-emotional variables that characterize children who are in a situation of foster care in order to provide adequate assistan…
Inflammatory fibro-epithelial hyperplasia related to a fixed implant-supported prosthesis : a case report
2018
The gingival overgrowth is a common finding in the clinical practice with a diverse etiology. There are no treatment guidelines defined for this oral lesions. These can provoke discomfort to the patient and often, can alter the function of the stomatologic system. This article presents a case report of a bilateral gingival overgrowth in a 68 years old woman wearing a fixed upper-arch implant-supported prosthesis placed five years ago. The clinical exam after removing the prosthesis showed an intense accumulation of plaque around the intermediate abutments associated to a mucosal enlargement with suppuration on touching the buccal area of the implant in position 1.5 and a probing depth of 8m…
From the South. Ernesto Basile's Routes and Destinations
2014
Except for a few gaps, the Basile's archive is one of the best maintained contemporary architectural archives in Europe. Basile wrote extensively about his travels and discussed their context and significance. The documents range from reports on the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878, to stories of Ortensio Lando, the sixteenth-century Italian humanist and traveler, who moved "from the far Sicily to the edge of the Alps".
Debating Europe: Effects of the “Eurovision Debate” on EU Attitudes of Young German Voters and the Moderating Role Played by Political Involvement
2016
In the run-up to the elections to the European Parliament in 2014, EU citizens had the unprecedented opportunity to watch televised debates between the candidates running for president of the European Commission. The most important debate was the so-called "Eurovision debate", which was broadcasted in almost all EU member states. In this study we explore the responses of a sample of 110 young German voters, who watched this debate, to the candidates' messages and whether exposure to the debate caused a shift in the respondents' attitudes towards the EU. Combining data from a quasi-experiment, real-time response data, and data from a content analysis of the debate, we find that respondents' …
Understanding the Consequences of Accounting Standards in Europe: The Role of EFRAG
2012
The global financial crisis has accelerated the need for standard-setters to demonstrate that they understand the effects of the accounting standards they are setting. Within a European context, the endorsement process and the ultimate adoption of new and amended International Financial Reporting Standards into European Union law demand that there is evidence to support the assertion that such standards will improve financial reporting. Our analysis is anchored in the ideology theory of regulation which provides a compelling case for effect analysis to underpin the standard-setting process. For that process to work effectively, a number of key actors need to engage in the process. According…

Tell Shiyukh Tahtani on the Euphrates. Highlights of the last excavation seasons
2010
In recent years (2006-09) the University of Palermo Euphrates expedition has continued rescue excavations at Tell Shiyukh Tahtani (the “Lower Hill of Sheikhs”) as part of the Tishreen Dam Salvage Project. Located on the left bank of the River south of Jerablus, in the land that once was the Carchemish district, this small mound has revealed a long occupation sequence from around 3.000 B.C. to Byzantine and early Islamic times. During the last three seasons we mainly concentrated in the investigation of the eastern slope of the upper tell (Area CD), where a continuous Bronze Age occupation has been detected. Apart from the later levels (EB IV, Middle and Late Bronze Age), one of the main goa…
