The use of the internet for corporate reporting by Spanish companies

2002

During the last decade there has been a profound revolution in the information technology by means of the Internet, and obviously accounting has been directly affected by this change. Although the main objective of this paper is to study the use of the Internet by Spanish companies to disclose financial information, we also discuss about the reasons of companies to use the new technologies to communicate with interested parties and its consequences. The empirical research is based on companies listed on the Madrid stock exchange , we analyse not only the information provided, but also the factors that explain the different attitudes of companies towards this vehicle for investors relationsh…

Intangibles Disclosure Information on Internet by Multinational Corporations

2003

Rapid developments in information and communications technology, especially with regard to Internet, have caused a substantial impact on the delivery and dissemination of business information. Internet reporting is expected to bring significant benefits to reporting companies, including facilitating access to potential investors an other stakeholders, disseminating information more quickly, more widely and at less cost, providing a platform to integrate different technologies and reducing the cost of providing hard copy annual reports. In this paper, we have examined the extent and the way companies use Internet to provide information about their intangibles. We have established for the Sta…

A case report of pulmonary vein isolation performed in a patient with polysplenia and interrupted inferior vena cava

2021

Abstract Background Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) has entrenched itself as one of the main approaches for the treatment of paroxysmal symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF). Pulmonary vein isolation prevents focal triggers from pulmonary veins from initiating AF paroxysms. As standard—PVI is performed through the inferior vena cava (IVC) approach, through the femoral vein. However, there are conditions when this approach is not appropriate or is not available. Case summary We report a case of a 53-year-old male who was referred to Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital for PVI due to worsening AF. Due to the rare anatomical variant of the venous system, the standard approach to PVI coul…

Acute endothelial failure after cosmetic iris implants (NewIris®)

2011

We report a case of an acute endothelial failure after the implantation of a new cosmetic, colored, artificial iris diaphragm implant called NewIris(®). A 21-year-old woman came to us complaining of progressive loss of vision and pain after NewIris lenses had been implanted. Decreased visual acuity, corneal edema, and increased intraocular pressure in both eyes appeared only 3 weeks after the surgery. The lenses were removed as soon as possible but had already severely affected the endothelial cell count. NewIris implants are an alternative to cosmetic contact lenses, but they are not as safe as other phakic anterior chamber intraocular lenses, nor are they a good option for the patient.

Pharmacodynamic approach to study the gene transfer process employing non-viral vectors

2000

Abstract In the present work we set out to apply pharmacodynamic concepts derived from dose–response curves (Potency and Efficacy) to characterize the gene transfer efficiency of a vector:DNA complex. We employed two widely used vectors, the cationic lipid DOTAP (N,N,N-trimethyl 1-2-3-bis (1-oxo-9-octa-decenyl)oxy-(Z,Z)-1-propanaminium methyl sulfate) and the cationic polymer PEI (polyethylenimine, 800 kDa) to transfect several constructions of the green fluorescent protein cDNA. The analysis of dose–response curves indicated that in all cases the goodness-of-fit was > 0.99. Potency is a measure that provides information on gene activity per amount of DNA. Efficacy is a measure of maximum g…

Diagnosis and therapeutic management of primary headache in an emergency setting

2013

Introduction and aim: Much headachers are under or mis-diagnoses and data regarding the proportion of patients attending an emergency department (ED) because of headache are still few. We conducted a retrospective observational study in an ED with the following aims: (a) estimate the proportion of headache attending to an ED (b) to estimate and describe the therapeutic management of primary headache and (c) to assessment the exam most frequently requested. Materials and methods: We collected data regarding patients diagnosed with headache consecutively attending the ED of the University of Palermo between September 2011 and March 2012. The study was approved by the ethics committee. Results: Between the semester evaluated 25110 subjects were admitted to ED headache suffers were equal to 1.6 %. Of these 263 (63.1 %) were woman and 154 (36.9 %). Mean age was 44.2 (DS ± 18.4) years (p = 0.068).According to ED registry headache admission was as follow assigned: 76.5 % with a diagnosis of headache 22.8 % with a secondary headache 0.7 % with Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalgias (TACs). Among those with a primary headache about 36 % of patient did not received a pharmacological treatment. Monotherapy was prescribed less frequently than combination therapy (19.1 vs 44.5 %).In monotherapy the most frequent medication were NSAIDs (28.3 %) benzodiazepines (26.7 %) and dopamine antagonists (11.7 %). Among those with a primary headache a CT scan was performed in the 124 subjects and 111 (34.8 %) had a neurologist consultation. Discussion: Our data are in line with the one previously reported in literature. The most frequently medication in the Italian ED were NSAIDs benzodiazepines dopamine antagonists and steroids. Neverless our data unlikely can be compared to other study give a snapshot. We believe that much more can be done to improve treatment of primary headache in ED.Settore MED/26 - Neurologia

Reclutamiento y reclutas en la ciudad de Valencia (1717-1762)

2019

This research aims to analyze recruitment by quintas, Spanish word for recruitment levies by lot, in the city of Valencia and the townships included in its jurisdictional area. The analyzed period began in 1717 with the first levie decreted by king Philip V once the War of Spanish Succession was over. Applied this levie in the kingdom of Valencia, this was the first application of levies by lot. The closing year for the reported period up to 1762, whith the last levy made by king Charles III before the establishment of the annual periodicity for the recruitment process. Procedures with which human contingents claimed to the city of Valencia between the mentioned dates were organized and dis…

Regulation of X Chromosome-Linked Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein (XIAP) in Kainic Acid Induced Neuronal Cell Death in the Rat Hippocampus

2001

INTRODUCTION. Inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family consists of several antiapoptotic proteins conserved among species. The IAPs have a well-conserved motif of approximately 65 residues, called the baculovirus inhibitory repeat (BIR) (1). Baculovirus and drosophila IAPs have two, but most IAPs contain three BIR domains. Most of the IAPs also have a C-terminal RING domain which consists of conserved amino acids with zinc binding capacity. XIAP is one of the five known human IAPs and it binds directly and inhibits the activity of caspases (2). The BIR2 domain in XIAP is sufficient to mediate this inhibition (3). However little is known about the presence and function of XIAP in the nerv…

Epigenetic control of IL-23 expression in keratinocytes is important for chronic skin inflammation

2018

The chronic skin inflammation psoriasis is crucially dependent on the IL-23/IL-17 cytokine axis. Although IL-23 is expressed by psoriatic keratinocytes and immune cells, only the immune cell-derived IL-23 is believed to be disease relevant. Here we use a genetic mouse model to show that keratinocyte-produced IL-23 is sufficient to cause a chronic skin inflammation with an IL-17 profile. Furthermore, we reveal a cell-autonomous nuclear function for the actin polymerizing molecule N-WASP, which controls IL-23 expression in keratinocytes by regulating the degradation of the histone methyltransferases G9a and GLP, and H3K9 dimethylation of the IL-23 promoter. This mechanism mediates the inducti…
