Large-sized pleomorphic adenoma of the cheek treated with Nd:Yag laser: Report of a case and review of the literature

2020

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) mostly involves parotid glands, while extra-parotid localizations are relatively uncommon. Particularly, PAs of the cheek minor salivary glands with a size larger than 4 cm are exceedingly rare, with only few cases reported. Surgical treatment of PA usually consists in radical excision. However, despite a presumptive radicality, recurrences, sometimes followed by malignant transformation, may occur. Here we report a case of a large-sized (6 cm) PA of the cheek minor salivary glands in a 70 year-old female patient, successfully treated through a conservative approach, based on the use of Nd:YAG Laser (λ=1064 nm). No recurrences were observed after a 2-year follow-up.…

Recensione volume 'Oratio obliqua. Strategies of reported speech in ancient languages, ed. Paolo Poccetti, Pisa-Roma, Serra, 2017'

2018

The phenomenon of reported speech in the world languages has gained attention in current linguistic research, as testified by the increasing number of recent works in this field, from typological linguistics ( Jäger 2007 ; Goddard & Wierzbicka 2018) to neurolinguistics (Groenewold 2015 and references therein). Although the wide cross-linguistic diversity in the way speakers report other people’s speech, there is a consensus on the need for identification strategies that are typologically valid. To this purpose, reported speech has also been investigated from many theoretical perspectives, from Functional Grammar to Natural Semantic Metalanguage, from Generative Grammar to Pragmatics, from P…

Miliary tuberculosis infection during hepatitis C treatment with sofosbuvir and ledipasvir plus ribavirin

2017

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is one of the main causes of chronic liver disease worldwide. In the last 5 years, treatment for HCV infection has experienced a marked development. In 2014, the use of ledipasvir/sofosbuvir with or without concomitant weight-based ribavirin was approved with a very significant increase in the sustained virological response. However, new side effects have been associated. We report the first case of an HCV infected patient treated for 12 wk with the combination of sofosbuvir/ledipasvir plus ribavirin who developed a miliary tuberculosis (TB) infection while on therapy. The patient was a 65-year-old woman, who referred malaise, asthenia, hyporexia, 7…

Variant Arterial Supply of the Descending Colon by the Coeliac Trunk: A Case Report

2021

Background and Objectives: Knowledge of arterial variations of the intestines is of great importance in visceral surgery and interventional radiology. Materials and Methods: An unusual variation in the blood supply of the descending colon was observed in a Caucasian female body donor. Results: In this case, the left colic artery that regularly derives from the inferior mesenteric artery supplying the descending colon was instead a branch of the common hepatic artery. Conclusions: Here, we describe the very rare case of an aberrant left colic artery arising from the common hepatic artery in a dissection study.

A status report

1992

Abstract This article considers the financial and proprietary considerations applicable to computer crime, computer security and personal privacy. The failure to take proper precautions in these areas can lead to major operational problems and substantial loss of assets. Developments in the late 1980s, particulary the discovery by the public press of so-called ‘computer viruses’, indicates the need for counsel representing suppliers and users to understand the basic technology involved and the legal implications. Such a report by Robert Bigelow was first published in CLSR in March 1989. He has now updated and revised the text which will be featured in several parts. In the first parts the l…

Validity and Reliability of a Single Question for Leisure-Time Physical Activity Assessment in Middle-Aged Women.

2020

Purpose: To investigate the validity and test–retest reliability of a single seven-level scale physical activity assessment question (SR-PA L7) and its three-level categorization (SR-PA C3). Methods: The associations of SR-PA L7 and C3 with accelerometer-measured leisure-time physical activity (ACC-LTPA) and with the results of four different physical performance tests (6-min walk [n = 733], knee extension [n = 695], vertical jump [n = 731], and grip force [n = 780]) were investigated among women aged 47–55 years participating in the Estrogenic Regulation of Muscle Apoptosis study (n = 795). The reliability was studied using Spearman correlations with 4-month test–retest period (n = 152). R…

Efficacy of screen recording in the other-revision of translations: episodic memory and event models

2014

In a 2011 study, Angelone compared the self-revision results of graduate German translation students. Participants documented their original translations using Integrated Problem and Decision Reporting (IPDR) logs (Gile 2004), think-aloud protocols and screen recordings. They then used this documentation to assist self-revision of their translations. Angelone found a significant improvement in error detection overall and in each of six discrete error categories when participants used screen recordings to assist their self-revision. We sought to partially replicate Angelone’s findings concerning the efficacy of screen recording in translation revision. Instead of focusing on self-revision, w…

Individual and Collaborative Semiotic Work in Document Design

2017

This article examines the concepts of agency, transformation and transduction in the context of document design. These concepts have been previously used to describe communicative actions and sign-making among individuals: whereas agency focuses on the individual’s capabilities as a sign-maker, transformation and transduction describe how individuals transform meanings within one mode of communication or from one mode to another. Organizational communication, however, is rarely an individual effort, particularly in corporate settings: producing multimodal documents that communicate on behalf of entire organizations, such as annual reports, constitutes a collaborative effort involving a vari…

Palabras clave: Testimonio, dictadura chilena, reconciliación nacional, libro reportaje Un viaje por el infierno by Alberto Gamboa: testimonial writing and imaginary of the Reconciliation…
