Punching, kickin', drinkin' and talkin' shit : the four essentials of being a superheroine : representation of female characters in Marvel's Jessica …
2017
Jokaista hahmoa analysoitiin kuuden…
Representationer av löpning i svenskspråkiga löparbloggar
2015
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, miten juoksuharrastusta representoidaan ruotsinkielisissä juoksublogeissa. Aineistona toimi 131 blogikirjoitusta, jotka on julkaistu kolmen taustoiltaan ja juoksutottumuksiltaan erilaisen juoksuharrastajan blogeissa tammi–kesäkuussa 2015. Tutkimuksen teoreettisena viitekehyksenä toimivat Giddensin ja Schillingin sosiologiset teoriat, joiden mukaan ruumis on myöhäismodernissa yhteiskunnassa elävälle ihmiselle projekti, jota toteuttamalla ihminen rakentaa identiteettiään. Vertailupohjana tutkimuksen tuloksille käytettiin juoksumotiiveja ja juoksun merkityksiä koskevia tutkimuksia. Tutkimuksen menetelmä pohjautuu Fairclough'n kriittisen diskurssia…

Constructing the secular imagined community : a critical intercultural analysis of discourses of laïcité from Le Monde
2016
The concept of secularism encompasses numerous aspects beyond the regulation of relations between the State and Churches. Using a critical intercultural communication framework, this research project explores the interplay between secularism, culture, religion, identity, and collective representations. Specifically, this study focuses on laïcité, the concept of secularism used in France. Previous studies have criticized laïcité for being biased and contributing to inequalities between communities in France. The pervasive (and false) representation of laïcité as originally and exclusively French has also been criticized. In the light of the concerns raised by previous studies, this study set…

“Sexuality does not belong to the game” : Discourses in Overwatch Community and the Privilege of Belonging
2022
Players can experience a sense of belonging to videogames and the transmedial worlds surrounding them. There nevertheless exist ongoing negotiations over who has the right to belong to these spaces. Multiple works addressing related issues have highlighted that white heterosexual men still maintain the position of power in the majority of game communities (e.g., Consalvo, 2012; Paul, 2018). This position can translate into an ease of belonging while others can find themselves struggling for the right to belong. We examine the transmedial world of Overwatch, an online game, as a place of belonging and non-belonging. Since the game’s launch, two characters have been revealed as queer. In cont…
Symbol, Munch and creativity: metabolism of visual symbols
2010
In this dissertation the relationship between visual symbols and creative thinking is studied through visual, textual and conceptual analysis. The first part of the work focuses on the concept of symbol, the second part on the imagery of Edvard Munch (1863–1944), and the third part on creative thinking. The problematics of visual symbols is approached through the concept of metabolism by assuming that both perceivable and non-perceivable properties of symbols can transform when symbols are used. Because visual symbols are frequently understood as conventional signs with fixed meanings, their perceivable properties are easily ignored. However, symbols can also be unconventionally used, for e…
Remote but Connected : Lapland as a Scene of Transnational Crime in Ivalo
2021
Set in a small town in the north of Finland, the crime TV series Ivalo (Arctic Circle, Finland, 2018) exemplifies the fascination of Nordic Noir with ‘remote’ locations as scenes of transnational crime. The plot seems to forebode the corona pandemic, portraying the spread of a life-threatening ‘Yemenite virus’ developed as a biological weapon from the Balkans to Lapland. In this article, I analyze how the virus narrative allows the series to bring new perspectives on Nordic Noir. The narrative emphasizes international connections while creating representations of places that can be characterized as both translocal (Greiner and Sakdapolrak 2013) and glocal (Robertson 2012). Because of its fa…
