Tom of Finland eli Touko Laaksonen (1920-1991) oli suomalainen taiteilija, joka tuli tunnetuksi homoeroottisena kuvataiteilijana ja joka sai elinaikanaan Suomen ulkopuolella enemmän julkisuutta kuin Suomessa. Laaksosen teokset representoivat korostetun maskuliinista miestä, jonka positiivisuus ja hyväntuulisuus olivat homoseksuaaliselle esitystavalle ajallisessa kontekstissa uutta ja maskuliinisuus hämmentävän heteroseksuaalista. Elokuvissa ja erityisesti angloamerikkalaisissa elokuvissa kuvataan itsemurhaa usein. Niiden representaatiot heijastelevat kulttuurisia käsityksiä itsemurhasta, mutta myös itsenäisesti vaikuttavat käsitysten syntymiseen. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelen Ari Asterin folk-kauhugenreä edustavaa elokuvaa Midsommar – loputon yö (2019). Elokuvassa sisarensa tekemää murha-itsemurhaa sureva Dani matkustaa Yhdysvalloista Ruotsiin fiktiiviseen Hårga-kommuuniin poikaystävänsä ja tämän ystävien kanssa. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan joulupukin representaatioiden rakentumista yhdellä suomalaisella ja yhdellä ruotsalaisella verkkosivustolla. Aiheen tutkiminen on kiinnostavaa sillä fiktiivisiä hahmoja ei juuri ole ennen tutkittu diskurssintutkimuksen keinoin. Fiktiiviset hahmot ja asiat, sekä niihin liittyvät tarinat vaikuttavat kuitenkin yhteiskuntaamme, uskomuksiimme ja käyttäytymiseemme. Joulupukkia kuvaavia multimodaalisia tekstejä on analysoitu käyttäen hyväksi representaation ja diskurssien käsitteitä. The control theory of driving suggests that driver distraction can be analyzed as a breakdown of control at three levels. Common approach for analyzing distraction experimentally is to utilize capacity-based measures to assess distraction at the level of operational control. Three driving simulation experiments with 61 participants were organized to evaluate which kind of measures could be used to analyze drivers' tactical visual sampling models and the related effects of distraction while searching textual information on in-car display. Abstract The article examines how the aspects of the social world are enacted in a theater play. The data come from a videotaped performance of a professional theater, portraying a story about a workplace organization going through a personnel training program. The aim of the study is to show how the core theme of the play – the teaming up of the personnel – is constructed in the live performance through a range of interactional means. In my article I study two Anglophone feature films, Jeppe Rønde's Bridgend (2015) and Susan Bier's Bird Box (2018), from the viewpoints offered by visual cultural studies and the theoretical domains of taboo and biopower. Both systems of control respond to risks and dangers to society, taboo through ideas of contagion and biopower through normative, especially medical discourses by authorized instances of knowledge production. They are reflected also in the audio-visual popular culture seeking to make sense of suicide through entertaining and artistic means.
