Aristocratic palaces in the XVIII century in Palermo : The construction site of Merendino-Costantino palace
2015
Palermitan XVIII-century palaces constitute a proper housing typology aimed to reach the highest standards of artistic quality and representativeness. Supported by unlimited financial resources, aristocrats commissioned to famous architects the design and the direction of their construction-sites; nevertheless, technologies were essential and often influenced by an instance of economy with the most effective exploitation of local resources. This work focuses on the constructive specificities of the Palermitan palaces, with reference to the construction history of the Merendino-Costantino Palace, one of the most representative of the historical centre. Its history defines a repertory of const…
RELAZIONE TRA PRESTAZIONI MECCANICHE ED ENERGETICHE NELL’ANALISI QUALITATIVA DELLE MURATURE STORICHE - RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MECHANICAL AND ENERGY PER…
2018
Masserie: Manor farms in Sicily. Typological characters, preservation and reuse
2018
The Sicilian land tenure was always characterized by the presence of latifundium. Such a land exploitation intimately influenced not only the farming techniques but also the population identity and farms’ typology. The Sicilian (and south-Italian) common typological form of rural estate is the masseria. More particularly, it is a large fortified farm built to control and manage a vast land-property, the old fiefdoms. This work focuses on the cultural and economic background, taking motion from the ancient feudality, that led to the construction and development of the masserie in Sicily. The typological characters, that deeply reflect the rural location and society, will be discussed: typolo…
Influence of application method on the use of ammonium phosphate as preservative
2018
This work deals with the application of the Ammonium Hydrogen Phosphate as preservative and consolidant during the restoration and consolidation intervention on a twin columns group in the east side of the Santa Maria La Nova Cloister in Monreale, UNESCO Heritage from 2016. The Superintendency for Fine Arts in Palermo prescribes the use of ammonium phosphate as the only acceptable material for the consolidation of the Cloister, so this work deals with the influence of application method and solution concentration on the results achievable with this material. Particularly as the treatment have to be done on vertical surfaces the use of a supporting material is mandatory so the focus is on th…
Texture Synthesis for Digital Restoration in the Bit-Plane Representation
2007
In this paper we propose a new approach to handle the problem of restoration of grayscale textured images. The purpose is to recovery missing data of a damaged area. The key point is to decompose an image in its bit-planes, and to process bits rather than pixels. We propose two texture synthesis methods for restoration. The first one is a random generation process, based on the conditional probability of bits in the bit-planes. It is designed for images with stochastic textures. The second one is a best-matching method, running on each bit-plane, that is well suited to synthesize periodic patterns. Results are compared with a state-of-the-art restoration algorithm.
Development and Characterization of Silver-Based Antimicrobial Ethylene–Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer (EVOH) Films for Food-Packaging Applications
2012
The use of silver as an antimicrobial in the food area has raised wide interest in recent years. In the present work, 0.001-10 wt % silver ions was satisfactorily incorporated into an ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer matrix by a solvent casting technique. The antibacterial efficacy of the composite was evaluated under laboratory conditions and in contact with some foods. The ionic compound did not affect the crystallinity or the water-induced plasticization of the materials and was homogeneously distributed across the surface and thickness of the films. When immersed in water, sorption-induced release of 50-100% of the silver ions took place in30 min. In the bacterial minimal growth …
Parvovirus H-1-Induced Tumor Cell Death Enhances Human Immune Response In Vitro via Increased Phagocytosis, Maturation, and Cross-Presentation by Den…
2005
Oncotropic and oncolytic viruses have attracted high attention as antitumor agents because they preferentially kill cancer cells in vitro and reduce the incidence of spontaneous, induced, or implanted animal tumors. Some autonomous parvoviruses (H-1, minute virus of mice) and derived recombinant vectors are currently under preclinical evaluation. Still not fully understood, their antitumor properties involve more than just tumor cell killing. Because wild-type parvovirus-mediated tumor cell lysates (TCLs) may trigger antigen-presenting cells (APCs) to augment the host immune repertoire, we analyzed phagocytosis, maturation, and crosspresentation of H-1-induced TCLs by human dendritic cells …
Effect of different cryopreservation protocols on the metaphase II spindle in human oocytes.
2008
The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of different cryopreservation protocols on the repolymerization of metaphase (M)II spindles in human oocytes. Fresh aspirated donor oocytes were cryopreserved 3–4 h after retrieval using four different protocols: slow freezing using 1.5 mol/l 1,2-propanediol (PROH) + 0.2 mol/l sucrose (n = 36); 1.5 mol/l PROH + 0.3 mol/l sucrose (n = 34); 1.5 mol/l PROH + 0.3 mol/l sucrose with Na + depleted–choline replaced media (n = 27), and vitrification by the Cryotip method (n = 23). The control group comprised 34 fresh oocytes. Three hours after thawing, surviving and control oocytes were fixed for meiotic spindle/chromatin assessment. Survival rates w…
