Heart rate response and functional capacity in patients with chronic heart failure with preserved ejection fraction

2018

Aims: The mechanisms of exercise intolerance in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) are not yet elucidated. Chronotropic incompetence has emerged as a potential mechanism. We aimed to evaluate whether heart rate (HR) response to exercise is associated to functional capacity in patients with symptomatic HFpEF. Methods and results We prospectively studied 74 HFpEF patients [35.1% New York Heart Association Class III, 53% fe- male, age (mean ± standard deviation) 72.5 ± 9.1 years, and 59.5% atrial fi brillation]. Functional performance was assessed by peak oxygen consumption (peak VO 2 ). The mean (standard deviation) peak VO 2 was 10 ± 2.8 mL/min/kg. The following chronotro…

Involvement of SYCP2L and TDRD3 gene variants on ovarian reserve and reproductive outcomes: a cross-sectional study

2023

Objective: Single nucleotide variants have been implicated in the response to fertility treatment and a pharmacogenomic approach may help to customize therapy based on patient genome. We aimed to evaluate the effect, individual and combined, of SYCP2L (rs2153157:G>A) and TDRD3 (rs4886238:G>A) variants on ovarian reserve, response to controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) and reproductive outcomes of women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 149 normoovulatory women undergoing IVF. Genotyping was performed using the TaqMan real-time polymerase chain reaction method. Clinical parameters and reproductive outcomes were compared acc…

The effect of cancer treatment on female fertility and strategies for preserving fertility.

2006

Aggressive chemotherapy and radiotherapy in young patients with cancer has greatly enhanced the life expectancy of these patients, but these treatments often cause infertility because of the massive destruction of the ovarian reserve resulting in premature ovarian failure (POF). This review focuses on the effect of cancer treatments on fertility and on the various surgical and assisted-reproduction innovations that are available to provide the patient with the option of future pregnancies. As the emerging discipline of fertility preservation is steadily attracting increasing interest, developments in the near future promise to be very exciting. However, in everyday routine work, better inte…

Reproduction beyond cancer: A message of hope for young women

2006

Abstract Objective. Aggressive chemotherapy and radiotherapy or radical oncological surgery in young women with cancer has greatly enhanced these patients' life expectancy, but these treatments often cause infertility or premature ovarian failure due to a massive destruction of the ovarian reserve. The objective of this review is to discuss the effect of the various cancer treatments on fertility and present the various fertility sparing operations and fertility preservation strategies. Method. An extensive survey of the most up-to-date literature was performed. Results. This review discusses the impact of current cancer treatment on fertility potential and the various surgical and assisted…

Unconventional monetary policy reaction functions: evidence from the US

2020

Abstract We specify unconventional monetary policy reaction functions for the Fed using linear and nonlinear econometric frameworks. We find that nonstandard policy measures are largely driven by the dynamics of inflation and the output gap, with the effect being particularly strong during QE rounds. Moreover, we uncover the presence of asymmetry and regime dependence in central bank’s actions since the global financial crisis, especially concerning the response of the term spread and the shadow short rate to the growth rate of central bank reserves. From a policy perspective and given the lack of a systematic response of monetary policy to asset price growth in nonstandard times, our findi…

Differences in familiarity according to the cognitive reserve of healthy elderly people / Diferencias en familiaridad en función de la reserva cognit…

2014

AbstractThis study examines the relationship between cognitive reserve and familiarity processes in recognition memory. We hypothesize that people with high cognitive reserve are able to better compensate in alternative information retrieval processes. Forty-five participants, divided into high and low cognitive reserve groups, conducted a recognition experiment where they were asked to discriminate between studied and non-studied words that varied in perceptual familiarity. The results indicated that participants were able to use perceptual familiarity to improve their level of recognition. More importantly, people with high cognitive reserve used familiarity better than those with low cog…

Setting the Stage: How to Perform Intracoronary Pressure Measurements

2016

FFR has become an established technology, and alternative approaches, like the instantaneous flow reserve (iFR), are currently being validated. FFR and iFR are generally easy to perform and interpret, but, as with all other technologies, oversimplification also carries risks. In the first chapter of this book, we present the basics of FFR measurements, including basic tips and tricks, and a short introduction to the devices available on the market.

Transdiagnostic neurocognitive deficits in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia: A …

2021

AbstractBackgroundImpairments in neurocognition are critical factors in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), and schizophrenia (SZ), and also in those with somatic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Intriguingly, these severe mental illnesses are associated with an increased co-occurrence of diabetes (direct comorbidity). This study sought to investigate the neurocognition and social functioning across T2DM, MDD, BD, and SZ using a transdiagnostic and longitudinal approach.MethodsA total of 165 subjects, including 30 with SZ, 42 with BD, 35 with MDD, 30 with T2DM, and 28 healthy controls (HC), were assessed twice at a 1-year interval using a c…
