Long-term decrease in sex-specific natural mortality of European lobster within a marine protected area

2013

Marine protected areas (MPAs) and marine reserves hold promise as tools for nature conservation and fisheries management, but data on long-term demographic effects are still sparse. Here, we use a unique capture-mark-recapture data set from Kavra, an MPA on the west coast of Sweden where fishing for European lobster Homarus gammarus has been banned since 1989, to directly quantify annual survival probabilities in the absence of harvest mortality. The non-migratory behaviour of this species allowed multiple recaptures and releases of a large num- ber of individuals within the MPA. We found strong evidence for a long-term decrease in sex - specific natural mortality throughout the study perio…

Emerging Economies Faced With The Downside Of Financial Globalization: Hedges And Way Outs

2009

The underlining assumption of this paper is that developing countries are in a fragile state nowadays. Economically, they have been seriously harmed by the 2008 crisis1 but this is not the end of the story: the future still has pitfalls in which these economies might get trapped, due to their enhanced vulnerability to exogenous shocks generated by financial globalization. Ideologically, the recent events have triggered a serious backlash against capitalism, particularly the Anglo-Saxon template. Getting an insight into the causes and implications of global economic crises is therefore critical for policy-makers in emerging economies. History might be a good adviser in this respect. Lessons …

Rezerwy jako instrument kształtowania wyniku finansowego jednostki gospodarczej

2017

Do rozwiązania przedstawionego problemu badawczego wykorzystano metodę analiz…

Factors affecting short- and long-term survival of patients with acute coronary syndrome treated invasively using intravascular ultrasound and fracti…

2023

Background: Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and fractional flow reserve (FFR) are invasive procedures increasingly used in acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of IVUS and FFR use in patients with ACS in Poland and to assess the safety of these procedures, as well as their impact on short- and long-term survival. Methods and results: The retrospective study included 103849 patients enrolled in the PL-ACS registry in 2017-2020. IVUS was performed in 1,727 patients, FFR in 1,537 patients, both procedures in 37 patients. The frequency of performing FFR in ACS over the years increased from 1.3% to 1.8% (p <0.0001) and IVUS from 1.7% to 2.3% (…

SIRM–SIC appropriateness criteria for the use of Cardiac Computed Tomography. Part 1: Congenital heart diseases, primary prevention, risk assessment …

2021

AbstractIn the past 20 years, Cardiac Computed Tomography (CCT) has become a pivotal technique for the noninvasive diagnostic work-up of coronary and cardiac diseases. Continuous technical and methodological improvements, combined with fast growing scientific evidence, have progressively expanded the clinical role of CCT. Recent large multicenter randomized clinical trials documented the high prognostic value of CCT and its capability to increase the cost-effectiveness of the management of patients with suspected CAD. In the meantime, CCT, initially perceived as a simple non-invasive technique for studying coronary anatomy, has transformed into a multiparametric “one-stop-shop” approach abl…

Landslide inventory and rockfall risk assessment of a strategic urban area (Palermo, Sicily)

2019

This study concerns the assessment of the rockfall risk for two strategic sectors of the Mount Pellegrino, one of the most relevant place in the city of Palermo. During the last two decades, several rockfalls affected the study area setting up a serious threat to the people, structures and infrastructures preventing the economic and social development. For these landslides a detailed GIS inventory was realized; the most dangerous rockfalls occurred within the two study sectors. In both areas we have carried out detailed field surveys and the geo-mechanical characterization of the rock slopes. These analyses allowed to define the rock mass parameters, the set of discontinuities and the kinem…

Diel variability in counts of reef fishes and its implications for monitoring

2006

Studies of reef fish assemblages in space rarely consider the effects of temporal variability on spatial comparisons, and when they do, usually examine timescales of months to years. The nature of fish monitoring surveys is such that particular locations may be surveyed at one time of day, and surveys designed to establish the degree of spatial variability in assemblages may be confounded if the order of sampling within treatments is not randomised with respect to time of day. In this study, we tested the degree of temporal variability in temperate reef fish counts at the same sites in New Zealand and Italy, within and between days. Repeated counts separated by months returned quite differe…

Protective Effects of a Discontinuous Treatment with Alpha-Lipoic Acid in Obesity-Related Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction, in Rats

2020

Obesity induces hemodynamic and humoral changes that are associated with functional and structural cardiac remodeling, which ultimately result in the development of heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). In recent years, pharmacological studies in patients with HFpEF were mostly unsatisfactory. In these conditions, alternative new therapeutic approaches are necessary. The aim of our study was (1) to assess the effects of obesity on heart function in an experimental model and (2) to evaluate the efficacy of an alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) antioxidant treatment. Sprague-Dawley rats (7 weeks old) were either included in the control group (n = 6) or subjected to abdominal aorti…

Sex-Specific Relationship Between Parathyroid Hormone and Platelet Indices in Phenotypes of Heart Failure—Results From the MyoVasc Study

2021

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a multifactorial syndrome with pathophysiological complexities still not fully understood. Higher mean platelet volume (MPV), a potential marker of platelet activation, and high concentrations of parathyroid hormone (PTH) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of HF.Aim: This study aims to investigate sex-specifically the association between PTH concentrations and platelet indices in phenotypes of HF.Methods and Results: PTH and platelet indices (MPV and platelet count) were available in 1,896 participants from the MyoVasc study in Mainz, Germany. Multivariable linear regression models, adjusted for age, sex, season, vitamin D status, cardiovascular risk …
