Cultural and socio-economic impacts of Mediterranean marine protected areas

Marine protected areas (MPAs) may be important for protecting the marine environment, but they may also have substantial socio-cultural impacts about which very little is currently known, or acknowledged. In the Mediterranean, few data are available on the socio-economic consequences of MPAs. The present study reviews the existing data on MPAs in Spain, France, Italy and Greece. A general increase in tourist activities in Mediterranean MPAs is evident, as are increases in the abundances of larger fish species, although there are no data indicating yields for fisheries increase adjacent to MPAs. Abstract Thiobencarb and propanil are two of the most extensive used herbicides worldwide in rice cultivation. Especially scanty is the available information regarding the effect of herbicides on fish energy resources. In the present study, the effect of sublethal exposure to these herbicides on the energy reserves of juvenile eel Anguilla anguilla was compared. Eels were exposed to 72 h to the herbicide thiobencarb (0.22 mg L −1 ) or Propanil (0.63 mg L −1 ), and allowed to recover in clean water (144 h). Abstract We specify unconventional monetary policy reaction functions for the Fed using linear and nonlinear econometric frameworks. We find that nonstandard policy measures are largely driven by the dynamics of inflation and the output gap, with the effect being particularly strong during QE rounds. Ethiopia has experienced a growth acceleration over the past decade on the back of an economic strategy emphasizing public infrastructure investment and supported by heterodox macro-financial policies. To analyze the country’s growth performance during 2000–13, the paper employs a neoclassical cross-country System Generalized Method of Moments regression model. The analysis finds that accelerated growth was driven by public infrastructure investment and restrained government consumption, and supported by a conducive external environment. An increasing number of oil market experts argue that OPEC members substantially overstate their oil reserves. While the economic implications could be dire, the incentives for overreporting remain unclear. This paper analyzes these incentives, showing that oil exporting countries may overreport to raise expected future supply, discourage oil-substituting R&D, and hence improve their future market conditions. Overreporting, however, comes at a cost since it must be backed by observable actions and therefore induces costly distortions of supply. A "Swedish" actuarial balance sheet for a notional defined contribution pension scheme with disability and retirement benefits

This paper proposes a “Swedish” type actuarial balance sheet for a notional defined contribution scheme embedding disability insurance within the retirement pension system. The underlying framework supporting the actuarial balance relies on a multistate overlapping generations model that includes the so-called survivor dividend and a minimum pension benefit for both contingencies. The proposed ABS splits the system into two parts: the actuarial part (pure NDC) and the redistributive part, which includes the assets and liabilities originating from non-contributory rights.
