Orbea is the oldest and biggest bicycle manufacturer in Spain and one of the most recognized bike brands in the world. With more than 175 years in the market, in the year 2007 Orbea decided to set up its third manufacturing plant in the Industrial park of Kunshan. After 8 years with activity there, in 2015 the company decided to close down the factory and reallocated its resources closer to the Headquarters. The disruption of the trade and investment activities of multinational enterprises as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic has reinvigorated the debate on the configuration of global value chains (GVCs) as well as the risks and challenges associated with offshoring. This article depicts how the pandemic might affect GVC configuration by driving a trend toward a more regional footprint in industries in which resilience and reliability are critical. The effect of reshoring announcement on company share price

The reshoring trend has gained momentum among manufacturing companies, which increasingly decide to relocate their production activities back to their home country. In this article, we explore the relationship between the motivations guiding the decision to reshore and the companies’ shareholder value. Particularly, taking an eclectic paradigm perspective, we aim to understand whether the motivations driving the companies’ decisions to reshore explain changes in the shareholder value.
