Nowhere Home: The Waiting of Vulnerable Child Refugees

2020

In her 2012 documentary Nowhere Home, filmmaker Margreth Olin sheds light on the vulnerabilities and injurabilities of child migrants subjected to prolonged waiting. The documentary shows unaccompanied minors being offered only temporary residence and thus identifies why these irregular migrants can be characterized as ‘particularly vulnerable’ by having their childhoods put on hold. Although the concept is contested, I conceive vulnerability as based on humans’ existential precondition in terms of something bodily and enabling. Due to child refugees’ particular vulnerability, prolonged waiting can violate their inherent dignity, bodily health, life quality and human rights. Therefore, in l…

Exploring Neighborhood Influences on Small-Area Variations in Intimate Partner Violence Risk: A Bayesian Random-Effects Modeling Approach

2014

This paper uses spatial data of cases of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) to examine neighborhood-level influences on small-area variations in IPVAW risk in a police district of the city of Valencia (Spain). To analyze area variations in IPVAW risk and its association with neighborhood-level explanatory variables we use a Bayesian spatial random-effects modeling approach, as well as disease mapping methods to represent risk probabilities in each area. Analyses show that IPVAW cases are more likely in areas of high immigrant concentration, high public disorder and crime, and high physical disorder. Results also show a spatial component indicating remaining variability attribut…

Particle drag coefficients in turbulent fluids

1998

Abstract An accurate estimation of particle settling velocities, and/or of particle drag coefficients, is required for modelling purposes in many industrially important multiphase processes involving the suspension of millimetre and sub-millimetre size particles in a liquid phase. It is known that the settling velocity of particles in a turbulent fluid may be significantly different from that in the still fluid, depending on turbulence and particle characteristics. Despite the wide range of processes that would benefit from a thorough understanding of this phenomenon, experimental data and reliable correlations are still lacking in the scientific literature, especially for the case of the a…

Impact of Demographic Differences on Color Preferences in the Interface Design of e-Services in Latvia

2018

In our study, we test users’ color preferences of interfaces of typical electronic services’ (e-services) environment. The motivation of our study is to explore discrepancy between (a) the high degree of availability of e-services in Latvia, and (b) low usage of these e-services among population. We aim to find the regularities regarding color preferences that could be useful in the development of e-services and that could support the rise of the usage of e-services in future. Although there are several reasons why people avoid using e-services (some of them socio-cognitive, some – technological), we would like to focus on a particular aspect – the colors of e-services interface. In particu…

Discrimination based on place of residence and access to employment

2014

International audience; The purpose of this study is to assess the degree of employment discrimination against young people according to their place of residence. We considered several spatial scales in order to measure the effect of the reputation of the administrative department or county, the town or municipality and of the local neighbourhood. The evaluation is performed using correspondence test data carried out between October 2011 and February 2012. We studied 2988 candidacies that were submitted to 498 job offers (waiters and cooks) within the restaurant industry and located in the Paris area. Statistical and econometric results pointed out that resident effect is significant and im…

Tourism Development in Riga: Resident Attitudes Toward Tourism

2017

This study analyses tourism development in Riga, the capital of Latvia. Riga is a tourist destination that was relatively unknown during the Soviet regime and is now becoming a popular international destination. The study reveals key tourism development trends as well as those features of the city that have highlighted the impact of the global economic crisis and the recovery since the country regained its independence. The goal of this research was to analyse the attitudes of local residents towards tourism including their perception of the impact of tourism in terms of how it has developed. In addition to drawing conclusions from collected data, this study has compared current results to …

Residents' perceptions of the economic impact of sports tourism. Differences according to the geographical location of the town

2018

Sports tourism has become a major tourist draw in recent decades. People are increasingly in favour of hosting such activities, given the many benefits it can bring to the community. The economic impact of such events is known but not the perceptions that residents have about this type of impact. Researchers also highlight the differences that the populations may have according to the geographical area where they are located and their influence on sports tourism activities. Therefore, the aim of the study is to investigate residents' perceptions of the economic impact of sports tourism according to the population of residence, differentiating between rural, urban and coastal populations. The use of e-government services and the Internet: The role of socio-demographic, economic and geographical predictors

2013

This article explores the use of e-government services from the perspective of digital divides. First, it aims to find out which socio-demographic, economic and geographical factors predict the use of e-government services. Second, the article aims to show whether these factors moderate the way in which the time spent on the Internet is associated with the use of e-government services. The article is based on survey data (N=612) collected in Finland in May–June 2011 and is analysed by using a logistic regression modelling. Results show that gender and income moderate the link between the Internet and e-government service use. The more that women use the Internet, the more they use the gover…

Evaluation of the perceived social impacts of the Formula E Grand Prix of Santiago de Chile David

2020

[Abstract] The aim of this study is to analyse residents' perception of the social impact of the Formula E Grand Prix of Santiago de Chile. A sample of 414 residents was collected through a questionnaire made up of 46 items regarding possible positive and negative impacts. Descriptive analysis, confirmatory factorial analysis and cluster analysis were performed. The results showed two groups with different perceptions of this sporting event: realistic (n=152) and favourable (n=162). Sociodemographic variables referring to education level, civil status, income level, location of the family residence and political orientation contribute to significantly differentiating the clusters. The varia…

How communities' perceptions of disasters influence disaster response: managing landslides on Mount Elgon, Uganda

2014

The aim of this paper is to assess the role of people's perception in disaster management. It is based on a study carried out along the slopes of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda. People living in the study area have experienced a number of landslides, but the landslide in 2010 had the most far-reaching effects on community livelihoods and resulted in a major setback to development efforts in the area. Experiences of landslides have enabled the local people to develop a number of interpretations of the causes and effects of the phenomena. The study revealed that community members did not share uniform perceptions. Whereas some members advanced technical or physical explanations for the 2010 di…
