What explains the resilience of SMEs? Ambidexterity capability and strategic consistency

2020

Abstract The ability to be resilient, to recover and bounce back when confronted with a threatening and stressful external event, such as the most recent global economic crisis, is an important issue for strategic management research, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Research studies on firm level antecedents of resilience offer contradictory propositions, some of which stress the need for experimentation, while others suggest focusing on reliability. To disentangle this controversy and face this gap, our study proposes that for SMEs to achieve resilience, it is necessary that these companies are able to efficiently respond to the changing environments through amb…

Bivalves and evolutionary resilience: Old skills and new strategies to recover from the P/T and T/J extinction events

2011

Diversity dynamics among bivalves during the Triassic and Early Jurassic provides the opportunity to analyse the recovery patterns after two mass extinctions: Permian/Triassic and Triassic/Jurassic (T/J). The results presented here are based on a newly compiled worldwide genus-level database and are contrasted to the main morphological characters of the different taxonomical (orders and their constituent families and genera) and ecological groups. Many of such morphological characters are innovations appearing during the time span considered. Diversity and evolutionary rates were assessed and compared between these groups. During the Early Triassic there was a slow recovery, dominated by ep…

Disrupting resilient criminal networks through data analysis: The case of Sicilian Mafia

2020

Compared to other types of social networks, criminal networks present hard challenges, due to their strong resilience to disruption, which poses severe hurdles to law-enforcement agencies. Herein, we borrow methods and tools from Social Network Analysis to (i) unveil the structure of Sicilian Mafia gangs, based on two real-world datasets, and (ii) gain insights as to how to efficiently disrupt them. Mafia networks have peculiar features, due to the links distribution and strength, which makes them very different from other social networks, and extremely robust to exogenous perturbations. Analysts are also faced with the difficulty in collecting reliable datasets that accurately describe the…

Defining and measuring the network flexibility of humanitarian supply chains: insights from the 2015 Nepal earthquake

2019

International audience; The efficient and effective response to disasters critically depends on humanitarian supply chains (HSCs). HSCs need to be flexible to adapt to uncertainties in needs, infrastructure conditions, and behavior of other organizations. The concept of ‘network flexibility’ is, however, not clearly defined. The lack of an unanimous definition has led to a lack of consistent understanding and comparisons. This paper makes a threefold contribution: first, it defines the concept of network flexibility for HSC in the context of sudden onset disasters. Second, it proposes a framework to measure network flexibility in HSCs. Third, we apply our framework to the 2015 Nepal earthqu…

Paesi senza feste, riti senza corpi. La religiosità popolare in Sicilia nel tempo della pandemia

2021

Villages without feasts, rites without bodies. Popular religiosity in Sicily in the time of pandemic · In the winter of 2020, the progressive spread of the Covid-19 pandemic led the Italian Government to enforce strict measures to reduce and curb the infection, including a ban on public ceremonies. All over the country, all festive plans had to be suspended. Such ban on the celebration of traditional religious festivals had quite a lot of social, political and economic repercussions. Feeling an irrepressible need to “celebrate”, each community reacted to such bans by implementing varied, innovative strategies while trying to single out and emphasise what seemed to be the most qualifying and…

A stochastic approach for self-healing capability evaluation in active islanded AC/DC hybrid microgrids

2023

This paper aims to implement a resilience assessment in AC/DC hybrid microgrids using a stochastic simulation approach. Self-healing measures including load shedding, control of distributed generation and flexible devices, like Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and Electrical Vehicles (EVs), are simulated to enable AC/DC hybrid microgrids to supply critical loads in islanded mode, assuming a disconnection of these microgrids from the main AC grid due to a fault. To perform this analysis, a two-stage process is proposed: first, a Monte-Carlo simulation-based stochastic approach is adopted to generate samples to simulate intermittent loads, power generation from Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), an…

Over the Cuckoo’s Nest : Towards a Nordic Model of the Responsible University?

2019

AbstractThis concluding chapter takes stock of the major elements, both empirical and conceptual, that underpin the case chapters presented in the book. The chapter is organised in three distinct sections. First, addressing a largely scientific audience, the chapter attempts to make conceptual sense of the findings from an organisational theory perspective. Second, it shifts focus to the wider community of practitioners (policy makers, advisers, university managers and administrators, etc.) by shedding light on the practical implications of the volume’s core findings for both policy and practice. Third, the chapter once again addresses an academic audience by sketching out the road ahead re…

Horizon: Resilience – Design of a Serious Game for Ecological Momentary Intervention for Depression

2021

Depression is the world’s most prevalent mental disorder and the primary source of disability adjusted life years (DALY). While traditional face-to-face therapies have been shown to be effective, alternative delivery methods, e.g. internet-based therapies, have been investigated to overcome barriers to access, such as lack of availability of therapists and infrastructure. This article presents the design of a mobile serious game as a novel psychological momentary ecological intervention for depressive symptoms. We discuss how selected principles and techniques of common psychological frameworks used to tackle depression, namely Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (including Behavioral Activation) …

Retail Geography in Italy: Historical Evolution and Future Challenges

2020

This chapter deals with the evolution of retail geography in Italy through a double perspective of analysis. On the one hand, the work deals with the transformation of retailscapes in the country, ranging from the first department stores to the evolution of retail in central and suburban areas. On the other hand, the chapter scrutinises the emergence of retail geography in Italy as a sub-discipline, strictly linked to the urban and economic approach, in order to deeply evaluate the geographical contribution in interpreting as well as analysing the transformation of retail and consumption places, which, in recent decades, have been completely reshaping forms and functions of Italian urban an…
