Resilient urban governance: Adaptation and innovation in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic
2023
The pervasive, unpredictable, and unmanageable outcomes gener- ated by the coronavirus pandemic portray many features of what have been defined as “super-wicked ”problems ( Levin et al., 2012 ). In this regard, defeating COVID-19 is not the only issue. The main problem is, rather, how to make our societies more resilient also to possible similar kinds of viruses that might affect our lives in the near future, provided the structure of the socio-economic and ecological systems where we live. As noted by Levin et al. (2012 , p. 124), ‘super-wicked’ problems “comprise four key features: time is running out; those who cause the problem also seek to provide a solution; the central authority need…
Towards Ecoism on the Road of Societal Resilience
2013
How citizens are able to understand eco-responsible conducts and a necessary community-based action in an individual world? With the "Transition Towns MOVIDA" project, we wish to identify levers related to a most collective and sustainable consumption. How our civilization can survive to a collective sclerosis accompanied with doomsayer's messages, increasing complexity and unstable governance? The present proposal consider major terms definition and practices, which can support the bounce to socio-ecological transition. When adaptive principles and practices runs for self-sufficiency and contributes to opportunity, availability or competition in a fragmented warming world, which behavioral…
Resilience in small urban centers with a strong historical connotation
2015
Potendosi indubbiame…
Meaningfulness as a Resource to Mitigate Work Stress

Biografic turning point in lifetime of individuals living in degraded contexts. The role of resilience.
2020
In the course of their lives all people experience events such as the loss of a parent, a child, job or sometimes violence, after which life is no longer the same. In these moments the regular, repetitive and comforting course of life changes because the event is the turning point that changes the direction of the subject's lifetime. The paper is focused on a study of 60 cases in which resilience intervenes in the biographies of individuals, living in conditions of socio-spatial marginality and high social vulnerability, to restore the existential imbalance of a biographical discontinuity represented by a traumatic event. The problem of the research focuses on understanding the role of resi…
What does insurance purchase behaviour say about risks?
2015
Purpose – This paper aims to explore the world of insurances as rites of adaptancy and resiliency before risk and disasters. The research on risks, both perceived and real, has become a frequent theme of academic research in the recent past. Design/methodology/approach – The information given by the superintendencia de Seguros de Buenos Aires involves 100 per cent of the insurances companies of Argentina. The reading of insurance demands corresponds with a new method in the studies of risks. Findings – Using advanced probability theory and quantitative techniques, risk management researchers have been able to construct sophisticated mathematical-statistical models of risk. Research limitat…
Performance of H.264 compressed video streams over 802.11b based MANETs
2004
We address the problem of video streams transmission in 802.11b based mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). Through the study of the delivery of a live encoded video stream, we expose the characteristics of different routing protocols and the infeasibility to provide QoS. The analysis shows the impact of a MANET on H.264 real-time video flows in terms of packet loss, end-to-end delay, jitter and distortion, and the behavior of H.264 error resilience tools in order to determine their effectiveness on such network scenarios. The results show that video traffic has demands that are hard to be met by a standard MANET, and that improvements are required in terms of routing protocols and QoS provision…
Empirical Study on Cyber Range Capabilities, Interactions and Learning Features
2021
Emerging technologies and the globalization require constant investment in people and their performance in actual and virtual environments. New technologies such as autonomous systems, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) radically re-contextualize the human dimension of the organization. Technological developments are changing the ways people experience the physical and the virtual environments. Strategic changes have revealed new critical vulnerabilities such as social media-based disinformation campaigning with impact on the human aspects at state, societal, organizational and individual levels. Scenarios of gathering information, committing fraud or getting access to critic…
Evolved high aerobic capacity has context-specific effects on gut microbiota
2022
Publisher Copyright: Copyright © 2022 Hanhimäki, Watts, Koskela, Koteja, Mappes and Hämäläinen. Gut microbiota is expected to coevolve with the host's physiology and may play a role in adjusting the host's energy metabolism to suit the host's environment. To evaluate the effects of both evolved host metabolism and the environmental context in shaping the gut microbiota, we used a unique combination of (1) experimental evolution to create selection lines for a fast metabolism and (2) a laboratory-to-field translocation study. Mature bank voles Myodes glareolus from lines selected for high aerobic capacity (A lines) and from unselected control (C lines) were released into large (0.2 ha) outdo…
Drought-related cholera outbreaks in Africa and the implications for climate change: a narrative review.
2021
ABSTRACT Africa has historically seen several periods of prolonged and extreme droughts across the continent, causing food insecurity, exacerbating social inequity and frequent mortality. A known consequence of droughts and their associated risk factors are infectious disease outbreaks, which are worsened by malnutrition, poor access to water, sanitation and hygiene and population displacement. Cholera is a potential causative agent of such outbreaks. Africa has the highest global cholera burden, several drought-prone regions and high levels of inequity. Despite this, research on cholera and drought in Africa is lacking. Here, we review available research on drought-related cholera outbreak…
