Global Upscaling of the MODIS Land Cover with Google Earth Engine and Landsat Data

2021

Image classification has become one of the most common applications in remote sensing yielding to the creation of a variety of operational thematic maps at multiple spatio-temporal scales. The information contained in these maps summarizes key characteristics related with the physical environment and provides fundamental information of the Earth for vegetation monitoring or land use status over time. However, high spatial resolution land cover maps are usually only produced for specific small regions or in an image tile. We present a general methodology to obtain a high spatial resolution land cover maps using Landsat spectral information, the powerful Google Earth Engine platform, and oper…

Learning multiresolution schemes for compression of images

2007

We introduce a new type of multiresolution based on the Harten's framework using learning theory. This changes the point of view of the classical multiresolution analysis and it transforms an approximation problem in a learning problem opening great possibilities. MAD+. Introducing Misconceptions in the Temporal Analysis of the Mathematical Modelling Process of a Fermi Problem

2021

This work describes how the combination of the mistakes committed by a group of pre-service teachers when solving a Fermi problem, with the representation of the temporal analysis of their resolutions, can offer more in-depth information about their conceptual misconceptions regarding mathematical and modelling concepts. The combined representation allows knowing when mistakes occur and provides a powerful tool for instructors to adapt the teaching–learning processes of mathematics at all levels of education. Our study is based on a recent categorisation of students’ mistakes, together with the creation of a new representation tool, called MAD+, that can combine all this information. The ma…

Review of thermal infrared applications and requirements for future high-resolution sensors

2016

High-resolution thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing has a wide range of applications. In this paper, we describe the different applications and requirements identified in a literature review and during a consultation meeting with researcher experts in different fields. As a result, more than 30 applications were identified within three different fields: 1) land and solid Earth; 2) health and hazards; and 3) security and surveillance. A complete set of requirements (spatial, temporal, and radiometric resolution, algorithms used, and supporting data, among others) for each application is also provided. The results presented in this paper provide useful information to enhance the importance …

Minimum configuration of thermal infrared bands for land surface temperature and emissivity estimation in the context of potential future missions

2014

Abstract A number of applications rely on the availability of high resolution TIR data, both in terms of spatial and temporal resolution, as well as in terms of spectral configuration. A consensus exists among the thermal community regarding the lack of such a kind of data, since only one operational sensor is currently providing multispectral TIR data at high spatial resolution (the case of ASTER, at 90 m spatial resolution and a 16-day revisit time). In this paper we propose a minimum multispectral configuration to allow the retrieval of both land surface temperature (LST) and emissivity ( e ) from thermal infra-red (TIR) data. For this purpose, we propose a minimum configuration based on…

Land Surface Temperature Retrieval Methods From Landsat-8 Thermal Infrared Sensor Data

2014

The importance of land surface temperature (LST) retrieved from high to medium spatial resolution remote sensing data for many environmental studies, particularly the applications related to water resources management over agricultural sites, was a key factor for the final decision of including a thermal infrared (TIR) instrument on board the Landsat Data Continuity Mission or Landsat-8. This new TIR sensor (TIRS) includes two TIR bands in the atmospheric window between 10 and 12 $\mu\hbox{m}$ , thus allowing the application of split-window (SW) algorithms in addition to single-channel (SC) algorithms or direct inversions of the radiative transfer equation used in previous sensors on board …

Fullerene-ionic-liquid conjugates: a new class of hybrid materials with unprecedented properties.

2015

A modular approach has been followed for the synthesis of a series of fullerene-ionic-liquid (IL) hybrids in which the number of IL moieties (two or twelve), anion, and cation have been varied. The combination of C60 and IL give rise to new unique properties in the conjugates such as solubility in water, which was higher than 800 mg mL(-1) in several cases. In addition, one of the C60 -IL hybrids has been employed for the immobilization of palladium nanoparticles through ion exchange followed by reduction with sodium borohydride. Surprisingly, during the reduction several carbon nanostructures were formed that comprised nano-onions and nanocages with few-layer graphene sidewalls, which have…

Fluctuation Methods To Study Protein Aggregation in Live Cells: Concanavalin A Oligomers Formation

2011

Prefibrillar oligomers of proteins are suspected to be the primary pathogenic agents in several neurodegenerative diseases. A key approach for elucidating the pathogenic mechanisms is to probe the existence of oligomers directly in living cells. In this work, we were able to monitor the process of aggregation of Concanavalin A in live cells. We used number and brightness analysis, two-color cross number and brightness analysis, and Raster image correlation spectroscopy to obtain the number of molecules, aggregation state, and diffusion coefficient as a function of time and cell location. We observed that binding of Concanavalin A to the membrane and the formation of small aggregates paralle…

Classification of Pecorino cheeses produced in Italy according to their ripening time and manufacturing technique using Fourier transform infrared sp…

2010

Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, followed by linear discriminant analysis of the spectral data, was used to classify Italian Pecorino cheeses according to their ripening time and manufacturing technique. The Fourier transform infrared spectra of the cheeses were divided into 18 regions and the normalized absorbance peak areas within these regions were used as predictors. Linear discriminant analysis models were constructed to classify Pecorino cheeses according to different ripening stages (hard and semi-hard) or according to their manufacturing technique (fossa and nonfossa cheeses). An excellent resolution was achieved according to both ripening time and manufacturing technique. A…

Comparison of basis functions for 3D PET reconstruction using a Monte Carlo system matrix.

2012

In emission tomography, iterative statistical methods are accepted as the reconstruction algorithms that achieve the best image quality. The accuracy of these methods relies partly on the quality of the system response matrix (SRM) that characterizes the scanner. The more physical phenomena included in the SRM, the higher the SRM quality, and therefore higher image quality is obtained from the reconstruction process. High-resolution small animal scanners contain as many as 103?104 small crystal pairs, while the field of view (FOV) is divided into hundreds of thousands of small voxels. These two characteristics have a significant impact on the number of elements to be calculated in the SRM. …
