Historical Events in the Background of Hilbert’s Seventh Paris Problem

David Hilbert’s lecture, “Mathematical Problems,” [Hilbert 1900] delivered in Paris in 1900 at the Second International Congress of Mathematicians, has long been recognized as marking a milestone in the history of mathematics. Certainly for Hilbert himself, this marked the single greatest event and a true turning point in his storied career. When historians and mathematicians have written about the so-called Hilbert problems, they have usually looked forward into the twentieth century, sometimes by viewing their resolution as markers for mathematical progress.
Symmetric locally free resolutions and rationality problems

We show that the birationality class of a quadric surface bundle over $\mathbb{P}^2$ is determined by its associated cokernel sheaves. As an application, we discuss stable-rationality of very general quadric bundles over $\mathbb{P}^2$ with discriminant curves of fixed degree. In particular, we construct explicit models of these bundles for some discriminant data. Among others, we obtain various birational models of a nodal Gushel-Mukai fourfold, as well as of a cubic fourfold containing a plane. Finally, we prove stable irrationality of several types of quadric surface bundles.
Multi-resolution analysis in arbitrary Hilbert spaces

We discuss the possibility of introducing a multi-resolution in a Hilbert space which is not necessarily a space of functions. We investigate which of the classical properties can be translated to this more general framework and the way in which this can be done. We comment on the procedure proposed by means of many examples.

In this paper we use the equivalence result originally proved by the author, which relates a multiresolution analysis (MRA) of ℒ2(R) and an orthonormal set of single electron wave functions in the lowest Landau level, to build up a procedure which produces, starting with a certain square-integrable function, a MRA of ℒ2(R). © 2003 American Institute of Physics.
A fully adaptive multiresolution scheme for image processing

A nonlinear multiresolution scheme within Harten's framework [A. Harten, Discrete multiresolution analysis and generalized wavelets, J. Appl. Numer. Math. 12 (1993) 153-192; A. Harten, Multiresolution representation of data II, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 33 (3) (1996) 1205-1256] is presented. It is based on a centered piecewise polynomial interpolation fully adapted to discontinuities. Compression properties of the multiresolution scheme are studied on various numerical experiments on images.
Application of the H-point standard additions method by using absorbance increment values as analytical signals

Abstract This paper demonstrates how the absorbance increment (ΔA) between two wavelengths selected according to the fundamental criteria for application of the H-Point standard additions method (HPSAM) are only related to the analyte concentration. A procedure for calculation of the unknown analyte concentration with no bias error by applying HPSAM to ΔA values in much the same way as the method of standard additions (MOSA), is reported. The method was also applied to a calibration with a single standard. The results obtained on 6 samples with maximal separations between 65 and 0 nm are reported. High resolution in currents reconstruction applying the extrapolation matrix and spectrum replies

A faster method for the reconstruction of currents has been proposed. For this a new algorithm has been used which extrapolates a 2D signal in less time than the iterative method of Papoulis. Results exposed in this paper show the likeness of the reconstructed currents with the new algorithm with those of the iterative method and the improvement that might be obtained in these new currents with regard to the iterative one. Furthermore, results show the higher speed of the new matrix method.

Predicting sediment deposition rate in check-dams using machine learning techniques and high-resolution DEMs

Sediments accumulated in check dams are a valuable measure to estimate soil erosion rates. Here, geographic information systems (GIS) and three machine learning techniques (MARS-multivariate adaptive regression splines, RF-random forest and SVM-support vector machine) were used, for the first time, to predict sediment deposition rate (SR) in check-dams located in six watersheds in SW Spain. There, 160 dry-stone check dams (~ 77.8 check-dams km−2), accumulated sediments during a period that varied from 11 to 23 years. Performance of TES method over urban areas at a high spatial resolution scale

The Temperature and Emissivity Separation (TES) algorithm is used to retrieve the LSE and LST values from hyperspectral sensors. In this work we analyse the performance of this methodology over urban areas. Three different sources of error in the processing chain of the remote sensing imagery are detected: the algorithm itself, the atmospheric correction and the 3D structure of the urban scenes. The TITAN tool is used to model all the radiative components of the signal registered by a sensor. Results show that: first, the TES algorithm used reproduces the LSE (LST) of urban materials within an RMSE of 0.017 (0.9 K).
