Grounds and Challenges for Implementing a Circular Economy in the European Road Transport Sector

2017

Environmental challenges, especially in the form of resource depletion, pollution and greenhouse gas emission, are very important challenges for the socio-economic development. For this reason, the concept of a circular economy has been developed and is being implemented in different areas. In 2015, the European Union adopted the Circular Economy Package consisting of an “EU Action Plan for the Circular Economy”, presenting a set of actions aimed at achieving objectives of the circular economy in Europe. The goal of the paper is to describe and discuss key challenges facing implementation of the concept of the circular economy in the European road transport sector. First, the concept of a c…

The Importance of the Romanian Library of Freiburg for the Romanian Exile in the Context of the Beginning of the Communism and the Sovietisation of t…

2018

One can notice a growing interest regarding the discovery and the highlighting of the forms of cultural resistance in the 1950-1989 period, especially the highlighting of the importance and significations of the post-war Romanian exile, in the communist period, based on the conservation and development of the interior existence together with keeping the modernist reaction regarding the autonomy of the aesthetics to its political insubordination. The Romanian Library of Freiburg constitutes an essential starting point in highlighting the types of cultural resistance of the exile. The Romanian cultural exile begun at the start of the 50s in Romania, when the persecutions of the intellectual e…

The paradox of the alien plant Leucaena leucocephala subsp. glabrata (Rose) S. Zárate in Sicily: another threat for the native flora or a valuable re…

2020

With this contribution, an updated picture of the rapid expansion of Leucaena leucocephala subsp. glabrata in Sicily is provided. On the one hand, this is a quite worrying sign, as this woody species figures among the world’s worst invasive alien species. On the other hand, the species shows interesting potential for production purposes (for wood, biomass and for feeding livestock), also considering its nitrogen fixation ability. Consequently, the two opposite options to cope with this species, i.e. cultivation and control/eradication, should accurately take into account the possible uses as well as its invasive behaviou.

A Migration Path for the Internet: From Best-Effort to a QoS Capable Infrastructure by Means of Localized Admission Control

2000

Looking back at many proposals appeared on the scene in these years, a fundamental lesson to be learned is that their success or failure is strictly tied to their backward compatibility with existing infrastructures. In this paper, we consider the problem of providing explicit admission control decisions for QoS aware services. We rely the decision to admit a new flow upon the successful and timely delivery, through the Internet, of probe packets independently generated by the end points. Our solution, called GRIP (Gauge&Gate Realistic Internet Protocol), is fully distributed and scalable, as admission control decisions are taken at the edge network nodes, and no coordination between router…

A Novel Architecture for Inter-FPGA Traffic Collision Management

2014

International audience; —with the increasing complexity of various communi-cations and applications, Network-On-Chip (NoC) is one of the most efficient communication structures. Multi-FPGA platforms are considered as the most appropriate experimental solutions to emulate a large size of MPSoCs (Multi-Processor System-on-Chip) based on a NoC. The deployment of the NoC into several FPGAs requires the use of inter-FPGA communication links. The number and performance of external links restrict the bandwidth of communication. Currently, the number of inter-FPGA signals is considered as a substantial problem in NoC implemented on Multi-FPGA architectures. In this paper, we propose the integration…

Notice of Violation of IEEE Publication Principles: Reinforcement learning for P2P searching

2005

For a peer-to-peer (P2P) system holding a massive amount of data, an efficient and scalable search for resource sharing is a key determinant to its practical usage. Unstructured P2P networks avoid the limitations of centralized systems and the drawbacks of a highly structured approach, because they impose few constraints on topology and data placement, and they support highly versatile search mechanisms. However their search algorithms are usually based on simple flooding schemes, showing severe inefficiencies. In this paper, to address this major limitation, we propose and evaluate the adoption of a local adaptive routing protocol. The routing algorithm adopts a simple reinforcement learni…

Targeted Poverty Alleviation and Households’ Livelihood Strategy in a Relation-Based Society: Evidence from Northeast China

2021

Although China is experiencing a transition from a relation-based society to a rule-based society, relationships among acquaintances still play an important role in resource allocation, such as the allocation of policy resources. This is particularly true in rural China, where targeted poverty alleviation is prevalent and a relation-based social structure still dominates. However, it is still unknown how relationships affect the livelihood strategy of households in rural China and how poverty alleviation policies plays a role between them. Therefore, this paper embeds poverty alleviation into the relation-based society and explores how households respond to the policy in this specific conte…

Moscato Cerletti, a rediscovered aromatic cultivar with oenological potential in warm and dry areas

2021

Baron Antonio Mendola was devoted to the study of grapevine, applying ampelography and dabbling in crosses between cultivars in order to select new ones, of which Moscato Cerletti, obtained in 1869, was the most interesting. Grillo, one of the most important white cultivars in Sicily, was ascertained to be an offspring of Catarratto Comune and Zibibbo, the same parents which Mendola claimed he used to obtain Moscato Cerletti. Thus the hypothesis of synonymy between Moscato Cerletti and Grillo or the same parentage for both sets of parents needs to be verified. In the present study, historical documents were consulted and genetic analyses and ampelographic, agronomic and qualitative character…

Comparison between energy balance and mass balance models for actual evapotranspiration assessment

2009

The assessment of the water needs for a specific crop has a fundamental importance in the management of water resources. The application of empirical models able to retrieve estimates of the actual evapotranspiration (ETa) to assess the need for water could give a valid tool for the planning of water supply, avoiding unnecessary water losses. In this context, two independent models for estimating actual evapotranspiration were compared. The first model is based on an energy balance and uses remotely sensed data and ancillary data from weather stations to assess the ETa. The second model also uses remotely sensed data and climatic data on a daily basis from a weather network. Field measureme…

Connecting the data landscape of long-term ecological studies: the SPI-Birds data hub

2021

The integration and synthesis of the data in different areas of science is drastically slowed and hindered by a lack of standards and networking programmes. Long-term studies of individually marked animals are not an exception. These studies are especially important as instrumental for understanding evolutionary and eco-logical processes in the wild. Furthermore, their number and global distribution provides a unique opportunity to assess the generality of patterns and to address broad-scale global issues (e.g. climate change).
