Podstawą teoretyczną przeprowadzonych badań jest koncepcja poznawcza, która zakłada, że dla efektywnego funkcjonowania człowieka kluczowe są jego procesy poznawcze determinujące schematy przekonań na temat siebie, innych i przyszłości. Badania prezentowane w artykule przeprowadzono w grupie 232 skazanych na karę dożywotniego pozbawienia wolności lub karę 25 lat za zabójstwo.
