SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT PERMANENT GRASSLANDS
2014
The Natural complete ecosystem, the original form of development of human society has changed due to the adoption of diversified development options, mainly oriented towards production systems designed to erode the harmony between man and nature. As a consequence of these changes, we are witnessing today an increase of the probability of manifestation of nuisance factors, namely harmful and the vulnerability of human society to their action. The global reaction to this situation, though delayed, is notable and oriented towards the adoption of specific actions intended to produce change towards a environmentally friendly economy. Nutrition-Related Diseases in the Medicines Reimbursement System of Latvia
2013
Latvijā ambulatorajai ārstēšanai paredzēto zāļu un medicīnisko ierīču iegādes izdevumu kompensācijas sistēma darbojas stingri ierobežotu valsts budžeta līdzekļu apstākļos, līdz ar to aktuāls kļūst jautājums par papildus iespēju izvērtēšanu līdzekļu izlietojuma optimizācijai, ņemot vērā arī preventīvo pasākumu nozīmīgumu. Pētījuma mērķis ir identificēt uztura atkarīgās slimības zāļu iegādes izdevumu kompensācijas sistēmā un novērtēt iespējas noteikt papildinošo uztura programmu potenciālo efektivitāti. Mērķa sasniegšanai izmantotas teorētiskās izpētes metodes (normatīvo dokumentu un speciālās literatūras analīze) un empīriskās izpētes metodes (statistikas datu vākšana, apkopošana un analīze)…
Innovation by co-evolution in natural resource industries: The Norwegian experience
2011
Author's version of an article published in the journal: Geoforum. Also avaliable from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.geoforum.2011.01.008 Some resource-based economies become wealthy while others stay poor and Norway belongs to the first category. This paper argues that part of the answer to why Norway has managed to benefit from its rich natural resources is found in the formation of a well-functioning national innovation system. The paper integrates the innovation system approach with a historical approach through the concept of co-evolution. The empirical study investigates how innovation systems evolve in natural resource industries through analysing the co-evolution bet…

Maritime-oriented foragers during the Late Pleistocene on the eastern costa del sol (Southeast Iberia): Cueva Victoria (Málaga, Spain).
2022
The Mediterranean coast of Spain is marked by several clusters of Palaeolithic sites: to the south of the Pyrenees, in the area around the Ebro River, in the central part, and on the south coast, one of the southernmost regions in Europe. The number of sites is small compared with northern Iberia, but like that region, the Palaeolithic occupations are accompanied by several rock art ensembles. The archaeological material (both biotic and abiotic resources) and radiocarbon dates presented here were obtained during archaeological fieldwork of professor J. Fortea in the Late Pleistocene deposits in Cueva Victoria, located near the modern coastline and about 150 km north of the Strait of Gibral…
The interplay of intrinsic need satisfaction and Facebook specific motives in explaining addictive behavior on Facebook
2014
We conducted an online survey with 581 SNS users. We developed a scale measuring SNS addiction.SNS specific motives mediate the effect of intrinsic needs on SNS addiction.People try to compensate thwarted intrinsic needs with gratifications from SNS use.Gratifications sought from SNS use can cause addictive SNS usage patterns. The present paper aims at exploring the new phenomenon of social network site (SNS) addiction and at identifying predictors of problematic SNS use. For this purpose, a scale measuring addictive behavior specifically with regard to SNS use was developed. The effects of intrinsic need satisfaction in the offline context and of SNS-specific motives on SNS addiction were t…
Developing picture communication for interactional situations at the beginning of the asylum process; mapping interactional practices
2019
The paper reports the initial findings of the first phase of the research and development project PICCORE – Picture Communication in Reception Centres. The ethnographic data was collected at four reception c entres in Finland. A multimodal viewpoint draws attention to how action and meanings are mediated through pictures. The initial findings mark established practices for enabling and coordinating mutual attention, supporting the use of visual and embodied resources in interactions and – as a consequence – supporting mutual und…
The genotypes and virulence attributes of C. albicans isolates from oral leukoplakia
2021
Background There is a debate as to whether some types of oral leucoplakias (OL) are caused by Candida species, and whether they contribute to the malignant transformation, associated with a minority of such lesions. As no detailed population analysis of yeast isolates from OL is available, we evaluated the virulence attributes, and genotypes of 35 C. albicans from OL, and compared their genotypes with 18 oral isolates from healthy individuals. Material and Methods The virulence traits evaluated were esterase, phospholipase, proteinase, haemolysin and coagulase production, and phenotypic switching activity, and yeast adherence and biofilm formation. DNA from OL and control yeasts were evalua…
