Metabolic syndrome

2015

OSA is a common disorder with major cardiovascular and metabolic consequences. OSA is often associated with metabolic syndrome, a cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors, and prevalence of metabolic syndrome is particularly high in OSA patients. The role of obesity as a risk factor for OSA has been shown in population and clinical studies, and increased adipose tissue volume and neck circumference are closely linked with OSA, even though major sex-related differences exist. Besides OSA treatment, cardiometabolic risk factors should be assessed and possibly corrected in all OSA patients in order to reduce adverse events. Occurrence of metabolic syndrome should be investigated, and modifiable…

Sleep-disordered breathing in the elderly

2009

Purpose: The prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) increases with aging. SDB is a risk of hypertension, and both might lead to cognitive decline. However, the role of SDB and hypertension on the pathogenesis of age-related cognitive decline remains unclear. We examined the effects of these two diseases on cognitive function in elderly adults.

Personalized medicine in sleep respiratory disorders; focus on OSA diagnosis and treatment.

2017

In all fields of medicine, major efforts are currently dedicated to improve the clinical, physiological and therapeutic understanding of disease, and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is no exception. The personalised medicine approach is relevant for OSA, given its complex pathophysiology and variable clinical presentation, the interactions with comorbid conditions and its possible contribution to poor outcomes. Treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is effective, but CPAP is poorly tolerated or not accepted in a considerable proportion of OSA patients. This review summarises the available studies on the physiological phenotypes of upper airway response to obstruction durin…

Relationship between mild to moderate renal dysfunction and obstructive sleep apnea: Data from the European sleep apnea database

2013

The relationship between severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and kidney function was investigated in the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA), where clinical, sleep, and biochemical data of patients studied for suspected OSA in 24 sleep centres of 17 European countries are stored. After excluding patients with missing data or extremely high/low creatinine values, data from 8112 subjects (2328 female) with creatinine values ranging between 0.5 and 2.0 mg% were analyzed. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was obtained with the Modified Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation. Patients were subdivided into two groups: group 1 (n = 3709) studied by full polysomnography; group 2 (n…

Engineering of charge, biotin-binding and oligomerization of avidin : new tools for avidin-biotin technology

2002

Avidin is a tetrameric glycoprotein found in chicken egg white. Due to its remarkably high affinity for biotin, avidin has widely been used in biological and biotechnical applications in life sciences. Avidin is also a highly stable protein, maintaining its functional tetrameric structure at high temperatures, extremes of pH, and in the presence of strong denaturants. In the present study we wanted to find out whether different properties of avidin can be modified with protein engineering using rational design. We used the 3D-structure of avidin together with sequence information from various avidin-like proteins to plan these changes. Besides shedding more light on the protein chemical bas…

Protective ventilation with high versus low positive end-expiratory pressure during one-lung ventilation for thoracic surgery (PROTHOR): study protoc…

2019

Background: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC) may result in longer duration of in-hospital stay and even mortality. Both thoracic surgery and intraoperative mechanical ventilation settings add considerably to the risk of PPC. It is unclear if one-lung ventilation (OLV) for thoracic surgery with a strategy of intraoperative high positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and recruitment maneuvers (RM) reduces PPC, compared to low PEEP without RM. Methods: PROTHOR is an international, multicenter, randomized, controlled, assessor-blinded, two-arm trial initiated by investigators of the PROtective VEntilation NETwork. In total, 2378 patients will be randomly assigned to one of two diffe…

Modeling epidemics through ladder operators

2020

Highlights • We propose an operatorial model to describe epidemics. • The model describes well the asymptotic numbers of the epidemics. • Ladder operators are used to model exchanges between the “actors” of the system.

Mediating effects of motor performance, cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity, and sedentary behaviour on the associations of adiposity and ot…

2018

We investigated the associations of cardiometabolic risk factors with academic achievement and whether motor performance, cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity, or sedentary behaviour mediated these associations. Altogether 175 children 6-8 years-of-age participated in the study. We assessed body fat percentage (BF%), waist circumference, insulin, glucose, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, leptin, alanine aminotransferase, and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT). Reading fluency, reading comprehension, and arithmetic skills were assessed using standardized tests. Speed/agility, balance, and manual dexterity test results were used to calculate moto…

The interplay between maternal homework involvement, task-avoidance, and achievement among adolescents.

2021

This study examined three aspects of maternal homework involvement (i.e., the quantity, quality, and source of initiative) and their direct and indirect associations with adolescents’ task-avoidant behavior in homework situations and academic achievement. The sample consisted of Finnish mothers and their adolescents who were transitioning from primary to lower secondary school. Mothers rated the quantity of their homework involvement (i.e., monitoring and help), quality of their homework involvement (i.e., autonomy support and psychological control), and source of initiative (i.e., mother- vs. adolescent-initiated monitoring and help) at the beginning of Grade 6. They also reported on adole…
