Prostacyclin is an important endothelial mediator involved in the interaction of neutrophils (PMN) with the vessel wall. Many studies have shown the beneficial effects of prostacyclin in ischemia and reperfusion. However, no previous study has investigated the direct effects of the prostacyclin analogs iloprost (ILO) and alprostadil (PGE(1)) on the endothelial part of the adhesion process. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were grown to confluence, stimulated with 300 U/ml TNF-alpha and treated with increasing concentrations of ILO and PGE(1). Infant and young children are prone to developing upper respiratory tract infections, which often result in bacterial complications especially acute otitis media because of the passage of bacteria (colonizing the nasopharynx) in the middle ear via Eustachian tube.

This virus infects the respiratory epithelium, leading to chronic inflammation, and induces the release of mucins and the loss of cilia activity, two factors that determine mucus clearance and the increase in sputum volume. These alterations involve reactive oxygen species-dependent mechanisms. Direct NMR evidence for the dissociation of sulfur-dioxide-bound acetaldehyde under acidic conditions: Impact on wines oxidative stability

Abstract SO2 reaction with electrophilic species present in wine, including in particular carbonyl compounds, is responsible for the reduction of its protective effect during wine aging. In the present study, direct 1H NMR profiling used to monitor the reactivity of SO2 with acetaldehyde under wine-like oxidation conditions. The dissociation of acetaldehyde bound SO2 was evidenced suggesting that released free SO2 can further act as an antioxidant. EPR and DPPH assays showed an increasing antioxidant capacity of wine with the increase in the concentration of acetaldehyde sulfonate. The presence of acetaldehyde sulfonate in wines was correlated with the overall antioxidant activity of wines.…

Possible association of sudden infant death with partial complement C4 deficiency revealed by post-mortem DNA typing of HLA class II and III genes

Based on evidence of an increased rate of respiratory infections in sudden infant death (SID) infants as well as the observation of familial occurrence, we analysed in a retrospective study class II and class II genes of the major histocompatibility complex in 40 cases of SID by Southern blot analysis of DNA obtained post mortem from tissue samples. In 24 cases, the parents were interviewed and confirmatory human lymphocyte antigen (HLA) and DNA typing was carried out.
