Modeling the probability distribution of peak discharge for infiltrating hillslopes
2017
Hillslope response plays a fundamental role in the prediction of peak discharge at the basin outlet. The peak discharge for the critical duration of rainfall and its probability distribution are needed for designing urban infrastructure facilities. This study derives the probability distribution, denoted as GABS model, by coupling three models: (1) the Green-Ampt model for computing infiltration, (2) the kinematic wave model for computing discharge hydrograph from the hillslope, and (3) the intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) model for computing design rainfall intensity. The Hortonian mechanism for runoff generation is employed for computing the surface runoff hydrograph. Since the antecede…
Problematising the equivalence of the test results of performance-based critical thinking tests for undergraduate students
2015
Abstract This article compares the test results of two different performance-based assessments of critical thinking: a constructed-response task from the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) and a multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ). These tests ostensibly measure the same critical thinking skills, such as analysing, interpreting and evaluating information and problem solving. The study utilised a mixed-method approach to explore the differences in students’ ( n = 330) test scores. The results showed that the correspondence between the CLA and the MCQ was fully comparable in 45.5% of the students’ test performances. Ten percent of the students had completely opposite test results. Explanat…
Do Physiological Responses and Personality Traits Relate to Auditory Perceptual Learning in Musicians and Non-Musicians?
2009
Peripheral nervous system can influence learning and memory functions by increasing the activity level (‘arousal’) of the system with increasing task difficulty. Several studies show that musicians discriminate auditory stimuli more effectively both neurally and behaviourally. Yet, the effects of individual peripheral nervous responses or personality during auditory learning have not been studied in musicians. In this paper, we show preliminary evidence on physiological differences between musicians and non-musicians during auditory perceptual learning. Results suggest that musicians have higher change in skin temperature and heart rate between resting state and active auditory discriminati…
Neural phoneme discrimination in variable speech in newborns – associations with dyslexia risk and later language skills
2023
AbstractA crucial skill in infant language acquisition is learning of the native language phonemes. This requires the ability to group complex sounds into distinct auditory categories based on their shared features. Problems in phonetic learning have been suggested to underlie language learning difficulties in dyslexia, a developmental reading-skill deficit. We investigated auditory abilities important for language acquisition in newborns with or without a familial risk for dyslexia with electrophysiological mismatch responses (MMRs). We presented vowel changes in a sequence of acoustically varying vowels, requiring grouping of the stimuli to two phoneme categories. The vowel changes elicit…
Shear and flexural strength of corroded R.C. beams
2016
Simplified equations aimed at evaluating the flexural and shear capacity of corroded R.C. beams are presented and discussed in this paper, with reference to ordinary beams reinforced both longitudinally (with same-size bars) and transversely (with stirrups). A model is developed to take care of diffused and localised corrosion (pitting corrosion), concrete decay in compression and bond-strength decay at concrete-reinforcement interface. A fairly innovative contribution of this study is the introduction into the proposed equations of the main parameters governing the corrosion processes. The proposed approach is simple and effective, and may be adopted in the assessment of many damaged struc…
Réflexion sur le lieu de consommation culturelle. Une application au cas des musiques actuelles
2004
The following study sheds light on the importance of managing a forsaken element of cultural experience : the place. Because of the weakness of the works relating to this element in the cultural domain, we use the works in distribution. Several competing theories are considered to conceptualize the cultural place: the own characteristics of the place, the behaviors and the “responses to the place”. The last track having our preference, an exploratory study will come in support to define the differents dimensions that compose this “response to the place”. Pop music will constitute our field of application.
Data from: The oxidative cost of reproduction depends on early development oxidative stress and sex in a bird species
2016
In the early 2000’s, a new component of the cost of reproduction was proposed: oxidative stress. Since then the oxidative cost of reproduction hypothesis has, however, received mixed support. Different arguments have been provided to explain this. Among them, the lack of a life history perspective on most experimental tests was suggested. We manipulated the levels of a key intracellular antioxidant (glutathione) in captive zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) during a short period of early life and subsequently tested the oxidative cost of reproduction. Birds were allowed to mate freely in an outdoor aviary during several months. We repeatedly enlarged or reduced their broods to increase or …
Acute impact of exercise on pro-onflammatory molecule concentrations in blood : factors that affect exercise induce response
2013
Atkarībā no fiziskās slodzes veida, intensitāt…
A study on the assessment of the production costs curves in micro-grids
2013
In micro-grids, due to their small scale, there is commonly only one power supplier. A competitive wholesale market hardly exists, so the question about how to consider market issues for small producers within micro-grids arises. On the other hand, the specific features of micro-grids where load and generated power hardly find a balance, require that customers take part to regulation issues, also using demand-response (DR) programs. In this paper, price responsive (PR) policies and their programs are discussed to answer this question. A case study of a micro-grid with one micro-turbine and two photovoltaic (PV) generators is analyzed to assess the overall production cost in order to build a…
