Effects of rowing training on airway responsiveness in asthmatics

2012

We previously reported that after a short course of rowing training the responsiveness to methacholine (Mch) in the absence of deep inspiration (DI) decreased in healthy subjects. We assessed whether a similar beneficial effect of exercise on airway responsiveness could occur in asthmatics. Nine patients (M/F: 3/6; mean age±SD: 24±2 yrs) with mild untreated asthma (FEV(1): 100±7.4% pred, FEV(1)/VC 90±6.5%) underwent a series of single dose Mch bronchoprovocations in the absence of DI in the course of a indoor rowing training consisted of two to three sessions per week for 10 weeks (total 28 sessions). Each session included a warm-up period for 20 min (running and stretching), and a specific…

[Evolution over time in over perceivers of dyspnea in asthma].

2006

OBJECTIVE: In previous studies we identified a subgroup of patients whose perception of breathlessness was exaggerated during acute bronchoconstriction and who were termed “over perceivers” or “hyperperceivers.” In this study we aimed to determine whether such over perception is sporadic or stable over time. We also examined whether there is an association between over perception of dyspnea and hyperventilation syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The subjects were 22 stable asthmatics (11 men, 11 women) who had been over perceivers of dyspnea in a study 9 years earlier. After a medical history was taken, a patient performed forced spirometry and a severity classification was made according to t…

Product Recalls and Supply Chain Responsiveness

2015

The increase in product recalls which occurred in recent years is mainly due to the globalization of the supply chains, in particular the outsourcing and offshoring of manufacturing and distribution. Besides being the main cause of recall, in this paper we argue that outsourcing (domestic and international) and offshoring may also affect the supply chain responsiveness in managing the recall itself. We test a number of hypotheses on this theme empirically on the pharmaceutical sector by using data collected from the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Validity, reliability, and responsiveness of daily monitoring visual analog scales in MASK-air®

2021

International audience; Background: MASK-air® is an app that supports allergic rhinitis patients in disease control. Users register daily allergy symptoms and their impact on activities using visual analog scales (VASs). We aimed to assess the concurrent validity, reliability, and responsiveness of these daily VASs. Methods: Daily monitoring VAS data were assessed in MASK-air® users with allergic rhinitis. Concurrent validity was assessed by correlating daily VAS values with those of the EuroQol-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) VAS, the Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test (CARAT) score, and the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Allergic Specific (WPAI-AS) Questionnaire (work and activi…

Vazodilatācijas intensitātes un insulīna rezistences rādītāju saistība ar endoteliālo (dis)funkciju raksturojošo signālmolekulu koncentrācijām hronis…

2013

Synthetic/ECM-inspired hybrid platform for hollow microcarriers with ROS-triggered nanoporation hallmarks

2017

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are key pathological signals expressed in inflammatory diseases such as cancer, ischemic conditions and atherosclerosis. An ideal drug delivery system should not only be responsive to these signals but also should not elicit an unfavourable host response. This study presents an innovative platform for drug delivery where a natural/synthetic composite system composed of collagen type I and a synthesized polythioether, ensures a dual stimuli-responsive behaviour. Collagen type I is an extracellular matrix constituent protein, responsive to matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) cleavage per se. Polythioethers are stable synthetic polymers characterized by the presence o…

Reliability and Validity of The Finnish Version of The Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire among Surgically Treated Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Patients

2019

Background and Aims: The Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire is the most commonly used outcome measure in the assessment of carpal tunnel syndrome. The purpose of this study was to translate the original Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire into Finnish and validate its psychometric properties. Materials and Methods: We translated and culturally adapted the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire into Finnish. Subsequently, 193 patients completed the Finnish version of the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire, 6-Item CTS Symptoms Scale, and EuroQol 5 Dimensions 12 months after carpal tunnel release. The Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire was re-administered after a 2-week interval. We calculated cons…

Response to computer-assisted intervention in children most at risk for mathematics difficulties

2015

Evidence of an association between poor early number skills and a high risk for later difficulties in mathematics manifests a need for both early identification of risk and effective prevention of difficulties. However, only a few theory-based assessment and progress monitoring tools, and intervention methods are avail able for this purpose in Finnish pre-primary education. This thesis aimed to examine to what extent a theory-based computer-assisted intervention method (GraphoGame Math, GGM) can support early number skills development in children (6௅7-year-olds) most at risk for mathematics difficulties (MD; defined as performance below the 10th percentile). The specific aims were threefold…

Arterial Load and Norepinephrine Are Associated With the Response of the Cardiovascular System to Fluid Expansion

2021

BackgroundFluid responsiveness has been extensively studied by using the preload prism. The arterial load might be a factor modulating the fluid responsiveness. The norepinephrine (NE) administration increases the arterial load and modifies the vascular properties. The objective of the present study was to determine the relationship between fluid responsiveness, preload, arterial load, and NE use. We hypothesized that as a preload/arterial load, NE use may affect fluid responsiveness.MethodsThe retrospective multicentered analysis of the pooled data from 446 patients monitored using the transpulmonary thermodilution before and after fluid expansion (FE) was performed. FE was standardized be…
