A "best practice" for inclusive art cities: the case study of the I-Access project
2022
The essay aims to illustrate the results of the I-Access Interreg Italia Malta 2016-20 project, conducted by a partnership led by the Department of Architecture, University of Palermo, with the scientific coordination of Renata Prescia. The project involved the Vucciria district in Palermo and the Bijcceria district in Valletta. Within the range of products that have been created (including database, web platform, mobile apps, protocol), in this essay we want to illustrate the actions implemented to facilitate both physical and cultural accessibility, from the integrated points of view between restoration and exhibition design. They are actions for overcoming of architectural barriers, cult…
A comparative study of different formulations of poultices for soluble salts removal from experimental plasters
2017
Soluble salts extractive capability of some commercial materials currently used in plaster restoration sector (ArbocelTM plus sepiolite; ArbocelTM, sepiolite and sand; Westox-Cocoon®) were tested in the present study, with the aim to evaluate their efficiency, their compatibility with the substrates as well as in terms of costs and duration of intervention. The three poultice products were first characterized in terms of porosimetric distribution. The desalination tests have been performed on samples of plaster specially formulated and made at the laboratory. Experimental specimens were then brought into contact with a solution of Na2SO4 0.3 M. The efficiency rating of these different types…

La chiesa di Santa Maria di Campogrosso ad Altavilla Milicia (Palermo), i ruderi di un monumento normanno tra abbandono, restauri e studi archeologici
2017
The church of Santa Maria di Campogrosso, long abandoned, is now a ruin. However, this church represents an important historical and architectural witness to the presence of “basiliani” monks in eastern Sicily, much less documented than the western Sicily’s one. Moreover, the story of this monument is linked to a very important episode, the Norman conquest of Sicily with the birth of the so-called "arabo-normanna" architecture. The essay describes the history of the church between abandonment, restoration and archaeological studies until the present.
Tree species influences diversity of ground-dwelling insects in afforested fields
2015
Abstract Impaired natural ecosystems, such as agricultural lands, are restored toward original or other target stage. Because the long agricultural history has changed the physical, chemical and biological features of the soil, afforested fields can harbor novel species assemblages and interactions. Our overall aim was to quantify the diversity of ground beetles and ants in early successional afforested fields. In a large scale field experiment, we compared plots that had been afforested 25 years ago by planting monocultures of birch, pine or spruce trees. A total of 4080 carabid individuals representing 41 species, and 131,933 ant individuals representing 15 species were recorded. Both the…
Restoration of a XVII Century’s predella reliquary: From Physico-Chemical Characterization to the Conservation Process
2021
We report on the restoration of a XVII century’s predella reliquary, which is a part of a larger setup that includes a wall reliquary and a wooden crucified Christ, both belonging to the church of “Madre Maria SS. Assunta”, in Polizzi Generosa, Sicily, Italy. The historical/artistic and paleographic research was flanked successfully by the scientific objective characterization of the materials. The scientific approach was relevant in the definition of the steps for the restoration of the artefact. The optical microscopy was used for the identification of the wood species. Electron microscopy and elemental mapping by energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) was successful in the identification of the l…
Antifouling Mortars for Underwater Restoration
2022
This research has focused on the assessment of the compositional features and mechanical and antifouling performances of two different mortars formulated for an underwater setting, and which contain Mg(OH)2 as an antifouling agent. Regarding the mechanical characterization, the uniaxial compressive strength and flexural strength were measured. The composition of the materials was explored by differential thermal/thermogravimetric analysis (DTA-TG), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRPD), and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) coupled with EDS microanalysis. The assessment of the biological colonization was evaluated with colorimetric analysis and image analysis. The results suggest that both m…
La Reggia di Venaria Reale in Italy and Palacio Real de Aranjuez in Spain: history, restoration and significance, comparative study between Two Royal…
2017
Everyday aesthetics on staycation as a pathway to restoration
2017
This multidisciplinary study enforces a suggested link between everyday aesthetic experiences and restoration. The studied phenomenon is staycation, a short-term holiday spent at home or at one’s home region, to identify how people use a (culturally) familiar environment for everyday aesthetic enjoyment and how that influences restoration. This focus minimises the potential effect of long-distance travel, novelty and escapism to restoration. Staycation has not been studied before from the perspective of everyday aesthetics and restoration. I explore staycation through a lens of qualitative media analysis; history and empirical research of holiday-making; and theories in everyday aesthetics.…
