Fate of organic pollutants after sewage sludge spreading on agricultural soils: a 30-years field-scale recording
2006
Le DOI mentionné dans l'article 10.2166/WPT.2007.008 ne fonctionne pas; International audience; Toxic organic compounds, such as the surfactants linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) and nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPE), Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and residues derived from plastics (PAE-phthalates) end up in sewage sludge. In order to evaluate and quantify the potential environmental risks associated with the xenobiotic introduction into biological life cycle, the EU BIOWASTE project (QLK5-CT-2002-01138) devotes one task to the study of the fate of xenobiotic in a sandy soil after sludge spreading on a 30-year field-scale record experiment. Experimental maize crop fields from Bo…
2020
The present contribution focuses on the strategies carried out to hinder depopulation and facilitate the recovery of the historical city centres in Sicily in the last fifty years. In particular, the essay analyses if the strategies and initiatives fostered in this field had been respectful of the physical characteristics of these small towns. Furthermore, the present study intends to assess if the improvement of the “quality of life” has been considered among the strategies carried out to contrast depopulation. The scarce efficacy of policies and strategies over the last fifty years, which emerges from this analysis, is partially due to the endemic inability of politicians and local communi…
2018
The essay deals with the deceased donor organ donations and, in particular, with the nature and the features of the consent which authorizes the removal from the body of a deceased person of any relevant material. The analysis is conducted through the scrutiny of the relationship that exists between the choice about to be or not an organ donor and the social interest to obtain a rapid increase of organ donation. The essay makes a comparison between the Italian and the English legal approaches to the freedom of deciding the allocations of removed organs, with a special regard to directed donations.
2007
We use stated preference methods to analyze consumer preferences on the attributes of protected natural areas and to estimate the willingness to pay for reducing the risk of fires in the site. For the first goal, conjoint analysis is used. Three attributes are considered: biodiversity, dimension of the natural area and the economic contribution that would have to be made for its maintenance and preservation. The willingness to pay for reducing the risk of fires has been estimated using choice experiment. The data have been gathered from a mail survey conducted among people living near the Desert de les Palmes Park, a protected area located in the Valencian Community (Spain).
2014
This study aims to analyze the vaulted and having a flat surface wooden ceilings that in Italy as well as in the all Europe found a great diffusion from XVII century to the first half of XX century, qualifying in the more complex and representative examples the monumental buildings, and often supporting at the intrados an unique and irreplaceable decoration. We believe that the knowledge of materials and construction techniques used for the original creation of these wooden carpentries, which draw on the "rules of art", is fundamental to support technicians and the other restorers in choosing the most appropriate intervention, addressing to the use of "sustainable choices" that could promot…
2009
Wooden ceilings characterize many baroque churches in Sicily and they have a particular meaning in the spatial conception of the architecture because of the false dome prospective painted on. For such a reason they are able to dominate the baroque architectural spatiality being a planar surface. Often forgotten and difficult to reach, the wooden painted ceilings represent an meaningful testimony of history and art but they are know asking for a conservation and maintenance attitude to start. The essay explain a method to design a conservation project without scaffolding and presents the software processing phases to develop in order to point out the degradation conditions through thermograp…

The ecology of the cork-oark (Quercus suber L.) stands in NW Sicily
2017
The uneven presence of the cork oak (Quercus suber L.) within its distribution range seems to be affected not only by its climatic requirements but also by rather specific edaphic needs. In fact, most of the known populations throughout the Mediterranean area thrive on acidic soils deriving from metamorphic or volcanic rock outcrops. However, some Italian populations of this species behave as if they were independent on the chemical and physical characteristics of the substrate, e.g. growing on calcareous soils, which are considered less suitable. This is the case of some populations in central Italy (Latium) and NW Sicily (Trapani Mts. and Palermo Mts.). A multidisciplinary investigation c…
Morphometric analysis of two calanchi areas in Sicily (Italy) by exploiting high resolution Digital Elevation Models
2013
In the Mediterranean areas, specifically in Sicily (Italy), irregular rainfalls, strong seasonal changes, scarce vegetation cover and, frequently, outcropping of clayey deposits favor water erosion phenomena. Badland landscapes are the result of severe erosion processes, characterized by steep slopes, sparse vegetation, high drainage density, rapid erosion rates and a shallow or non existing regolith profile. In this investigation we focused on the calanchi badland type, consisting of heavily dissected terrain with steep, unvegetated slopes and channels that rapidly incise and extend headwards. This research was carried out in two calanchi sites located in Sicily. The geometry of 25 badland…
